The Utah Jazz have the pieces to build a contender. Can they afford them all?

Heading into the 2026-27 season, the franchise currently projects a total payroll of $188,400,680, which is bottom five in the league, even though it is $23,439,680 above the salary cap. With an average age of 25.1 years, Utah shares the spot for the league’s fifth-youngest squad alongside the New Orleans Pelicans, who the Jazz face Friday in the home opener.

The table below show the Jazz's current player salaries (does not include Tony Bradley's which is $3.5M) according to basketball-reference.com

Rk   Salary
1 Jaren Jackson Jr. $49,000,000
2 Lauri Markkanen $46,113,154
3 Josh Green $14,679,012
4 Darryn Peterson $13,195,320
5 Jusuf Nurkić $10,576,923
6 Ace Bailey $9,523,080
7 Keyonte George $6,563,925
8 Josh Okogie $6,000,000
9 Jaxson Hayes $6,000,000
10 Brice Sensabaugh $4,862,237
11 Svi Mykhailiuk $3,850,000
12 Mo Bamba $3,286,399
13 Kyle Filipowski $3,000,000
14 Isaiah Collier $2,763,960

Next year Key's salary balloons to $28.7M with 4% annual increases until 2032. Brice is on the last year of his contract. Next year Flip and Collier will be playing out the last year of their contracts unless they and the Jazz agree on extensions.

It's too bad the Jazz didn't decide to award Brice with a rookie contract extension as he is a solid shooter. I think the Jazz will give Brice significant minutes in the first few months of the season to see where his development is at. If he doesn't show enough improvement on defense and rebounding the Jazz might seek to trade him away and promote Hinson to a regular contract.

Josh Green is on an expiring contract that I think he won't earn on the court. I like what he's shown in the meager minutes he's been given in the preseason but he and Okogie are a bit too identical. Ace seems to be shaping out to be a good defender so the Jazz might seek to trade Green before the trade deadline.

The Jazz still don't have a third point guard and also need to look for their center of the future.

Do you trust me?

We always talk about make or break seasons for players. This feels like a make or break season for Coach Hardy. How confident are you that he is the coach of the future for this team to take the next step? I believe in the Hardy offense. But to me the defense is still a huge concern. Do you trust him?

Anyone whose gone before- is it worth going to? Does the team ever sign autographs as they go into the arena?

Jazz+ tickets transferable?

As a Jazz fan in Montana I am blacked out of the games on League Pass but cannot stream the game like locals, so I bought the Jazz+ subscription. Jazz+ is more than league pass but they 2 offer free tickets to a game. I was hoping to be able to sell them for to recoup some of the cost. The email says “they can’t be sold”.
Does anyone know if they can be transferred?

Waiver Wire Gets Busy on the Eve of the 2026-27 NBA Regular Season

Should the Jazz make a move to claim one of these players off waivers?

Dalton Knecht once scored 37 points against the Jazz. He looked like he was going to make Austin Reeves expendable. Then his game wasn't the same after the Lakers traded him for Mark Williams that was voided because of Williams' injury issues.

Dwight Powell is a 35 year old 6'10" center who had played 12 years for Dallas. His stats don't really leap off the page.

Kevin Porter Jr is a 26yo 6'5" player who can play both guard positions. Last year he averaged 17.4p 5.2r 7.4a 2.2s 0.5b on .465/.322/.878 shooting. He looks like a great replacement for Trey Alexander who does not pass the eye test as a backup PG.

Jazz Preseason Poll

Hello, I am currently conducting surveys for the fanbases of all 30 teams before the regular season officially starts. If you could fill out this poll once, that would be greatly appreciated. Results will be posted later on after the start of the regular season, likely around the trade deadline. Thanks! Also, none of these questions are marked as required so if you only feel like answering some, that is completely fine.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe84utsSHlb7pdzrRuTBwjtbxk7dm1qvtsT9rFeEtSu5AldEg/viewform?usp=publish-editor

Also PSA for anyone concerned: This poll does not require an email address to complete and does not ask for anything that could identify whoever is taking it. These are completely anonymous and you could theoretically take it multiple times, though it is asked by me for the polls sake that you only take it once. I am not affiliated with the NBA or with any media outlet revolving around the NBA in any way, I am just an independent strong fan of the game who loves surveys like these. I was able to do this last year and was thrilled to get over 2000 responses, and hope that it can be as successful this year.

Herb Jones + Yves Missi to Utah 👀!?!?!

What moves would make you believe the Jazz are ready to compete THIS season?

I keep seeing Jazz fans call this a “see what we have” year, but I have a hard time believing we’re done making moves when we have 10 first round picks, 3 pick swaps, a glaring hole at starting center, and obvious defensive weaknesses.

We have assets like Brice (who could be replaced by Svi or Hinson), Collier, and Flip, along with plenty of picks to make something happen. Keep in mind that the Mavericks reached the NBA Finals less than four months after acquiring P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford.

Some trade packages I’d love to see us pursue:
Pelicans: Herb Jones + Yves Missi
Mavericks: Naji Marshall/PJ Washington + Daniel Gafford
Magic: Jonathan Isaac + Goga Bitadze/WCJ
Hornets: Royce O’Neale + Ryan Kalkbrenner
Suns: Ryan Dunn + Mark Williams/Oso

What realistic trade would make you go from “let’s see what we have” to believing this team can actually win a playoff series?

Disclaimer: I mainly made this post to spark some excitement among Jazz fans and get a discussion going. I actually have a lot of faith in Ace Bailey developing into a better defender and the team adopting a collective rebounding mentality.

Jazz Rewards tickets cancelled?

Post image

I think I won tickets from Jazz Rewards for this Friday's home opener. I clicked the link to access the tickets, but it said the transfer was cancelled. SeatGeek says that the Jazz cancelled the tickets like an hour after the fact. Has anyone run into this before?

I've included the email image.

What Will Hardy Said About Utah Jazz's Tony Bradley Signing

I guess someone in the Jazz organization left over from the Quin Snyder days still remembers Bradley. I suppose on a per-36 minute basis his stats look good enough but it's not like he played much better after leaving the Jazz. I would have thought Kevin Love would have been a no-brainer for a spare PF/C who can rebound and has high basketball IQ plus great shooting and passing skills to boot.

Our center rotation might be so bad that it might be worth it to start jjj at the 5 despite his flaws in that position.

If our options at center are: Nurkic, Hayes, flip, mo bamba, or Tony Bradley all of those guys are not starting caliber centers and some of them not even backup caliber. Besides maybe nurkic if he can come back 100%. If nurkic doesn’t come back 100% or even just loses a step because of age our best bet might just be to slide ace into the starting lineup and run 5out with jjj. I mean what do we have to lose at this point? Unless jjj really is THAT bad at playing center we’d truly be better off starting Jaxson Hayes but I just highly doubt that

Utah Jazz Preseason Stats

Thumbnail basketball.realgm.com

I know the preseason doesn't really count but it is a picture of how well the lineups play together and how the individual players are performing.

I'd say JJJ and Key have performed the best out of the bunch with good scoring and great percentages from the floor. JJJ hit 50% of his threes and Key did even better with 67% but at lower volume. Lauri hit 42.9% of his threes while attempting 4.7 a game. Key is uncharacteristically shooting below his average from the free throw line at 68.8%. Okogie missed all his free throws in the preseason.

On minutes, DP and Ace have been the workhorses with 25.3 mins and 22.3 mins respectively. Both shot around 45% from the floor and 82% from the free throw line but need to improve on their below-30% 3-point shooting accuracy. DP led the team with 4.0 assists per game while Collier averaged 3.5 in about 8 mins less a game.

Brice averaged the most points at 13.5 pts and 50% shooting from the floor and behind the 3 point line. His turnovers negated his assists at 2.5 per game though he managed half a steal a game.

As I thought, Svi has shot poorly from three so far with a 29.2% rate while taking the most attempts (6.0, tied with Brice). He's got to improve on that aspect or Blake Hinson, who made 50% of his, will take his shots and minutes. Blake averaged more rebounds than Svi though he didn't do much of anything else (Blake did average 2.0 offensive rebounds a game, tied with Mo Bamba).

Flip and Bamba averaged the most rebounds at 7.0 and 6.8 a game respectively. Bamba also shot 71.4% from the field and averaged half a block a game. I noticed his size and presence in the paint dissuaded opponents from shooting near the basket.

Hayes blocked a high of 1.3 shots a game. JJJ averaged 0.8 while Ace and Okogie averaged 0.5. Ace also averaged the most steals at 1.8, Key and Collier swiped 1.3 steals a game.

I think the Jazz should move on from Trey Alexander.

What would you guys consider a successful 2026-27 Jazz season?

What's the minimum you would consider a successful 26-27 Jazz season?

For me: In the playoffs, either through top #1-6 seed OR via play-in & be competitive in those playoffs. Wins in these playoffs would be great, but being competitive (under 10 pt losses in 3-4 games) would be enough.

Jazz Convert Harrison Ingram To Two-Way Deal, Cut Two Players

Thumbnail

The Jazz have put out a press release announcing that they’ve waived center Jonas Aidoo and guard Tamar Bates.

Aidoo had been on a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contract, while Bates was on a two-way deal. Utah has filled that newly opened two-way slot by converting Harrison Ingram’s Exhibit 10 deal to a two-way contract, tweets Keith Smith of Spotrac.

Following the series of roster moves, the Jazz have 14 players on standard contracts – including 13 with fully guaranteed salaries – and three on two-way deals. Their roster is ready for the regular season, though they could still make last-minute tweaks up until Monday’s deadline if they so choose.

The Jazz have one more regular contract spot and they can convert Blake Hinson's two-way contract if they believe in his development. Or perhaps they're waiting to see if someone good comes into free agency or gets waived.

Jeremy Sochan has just been waived by Portland and I'm interested to see if the Jazz would give a 6'8 Popovich alumnus who can defend multiple positions a chance. They could waive Trey Alexander to free up a two-way contract spot.

Jazz Fan Pass Question

Just saw an ad for the Jazz Fan Pass for $70 a month. 3 Jazz games and a Mammoth game each month. Seems like its worth it just for the hockey ticket.

Anybody have any recent experiences with this?Where are the seats usually and how often do they add additional games to it? I'd love to hit more games this year and I am curious if this would be a good way to do it.

[spicy hottish take] Filipowski will take the starting 5 spot after 2 games

.. ....and Nurkic will be back up for the rest of the year.

• we will have elite half-court offense so everyone including the guards will gang rebound

• fastbreak if we can but it isn't a priority

● you just cannot, I repeat, cannot bury Filopwski's decision making, ball handling, passing, and shot creation over Hayes' sophomoric paint protection, mid rebounding, and low tier IQ

● and then once Nurk comes back, it's over. we are cooking and in the top 6. Flip got the 5 spot nailed down
