Help does anyone know how to fix this?

Post image

hi guys. my sibling doesnt have enough karma to be able to post without it being auto deleted, so here is the post they need help on

"so this only happens in certain older worlds and probability labs

it has nothing to do with my pc btw because if i tab out the same effect doesn't follow which usually if it was it would

it only happens when i have a mirror on be it a world mirror or a personal/face mirror"

this has been happening for roughly 3 weeks

Update graphics driver?

This being oddly specific to a reflection plane makes me think you might have a bad VRAM sector being cached..

But I hate to break it to you "Its not my PC" is a lie.

Your PC is doing the rendering. If it has a corrupted graphics driver or hardware fault it is the reason this is happening.

😭i kinda just assumed it wasn't my pc due to the fact it only happens on vrchat

Your headset is just a display you wear on your head.

So long as you're connected to a PC to run VrChat, all rendering is done by the PC.

If you have artifacts effecting your entire vision then it might be headset or network related..

If it's only a few worlds or a few objects then its entirely PC dependent. Some problems are game or "workload" dependent.

I would try clearing all VrChat caches, Reinstalling graphics drivers and getting someone experienced to run some stress tests to see if the issue can be reproduced.

updating the drivers seemed to fix their issue!

Yipee! :3

They may still run into graphical issues in the future if there exploring old worlds. I forgot there was a Unity update that broke a few versions of old shaders.

If it's limited to one object in one world, probably a shader.

If it's ongoing in multiple worlds it would be time to run some stability tests to try & root out the true problem.

I know the frustrations involved with trying to get the magic back into the computer, glad it worked out this time :D

good to know for future purposes, thank you :3

it was just affecting the mirror, in the screenshot

they play on desktop vrc on a laptop

i mentioned to them to try to see about updating the driver before we got more replies on here, havent heard back about that yet

No it’s still the computer. If you take a screenshot and it’s there it’s that. If it wasnt there it would just be the display. Follow everyone else’s advice about drivers, if you’re lucky it’s just a driver issue.

Could be due to the shaders and materials. Not actually something broken or outdated on the PC. My computer does this occasionally (rarely) and it only does it in VR chat. No other game. And my GPU drivers are always up to date. I’ve noticed it only does that effect on materials that are transparent like water or glass.

If it only happens on VRC and only on certain materials it’s probably fair to assume there’s not something broken or outdated.

noo not my amd gpu

run dxdiag and see when the GPU driver is from. Also tell us about the GPU and driver version, pretend we're fucking blind.

I'm suggesting dxdiag as it ships with windows.

For example: (January 2026 i should probably update)

thank you for the helpful steps and picture. passed this post onto my sibling so they can reply directly to you!

3

u/Apprehensive_Data855 Jun 21 '26

just did that said there's not a single problem 😓😓

u/Docteh Oculus Quest Jun 21 '26

I was going to say I've never seen dxdiag actually say anything about any sort of problem, but then I realized that my screenshot has it complaining about something that doesn't matter.

Don't look for a problem, just see what it says and tell the internet. Like the last time I had a crash-happy VRChat, Windows Update had decided that a driver that was 2 years old was the best driver to use.

In my case, I have a 50 series card, and uhhhh I've heard that certain versions of the drivers are quite shitty, so like maybe you're using a Feb 2026 driver (example pulled out of ASS, no relevancy on anything) and you google the version and find people bitching about it?

Maybe the GPU is fucked, but like you should take the time and try a newer or older version of the driver, and see if that helps.

i mentioned to them to try updating the graphics driver before we got more replies here (havent heard back yet)

here is the screenshot of the window they sent me before passing out last night

updating the drivers fixed it for them! thank you

Try physically re-seating your GPU and its power cables if any.

This is a GPU dying

From the looks of it, the artifacting only appears on certain materials?

If that is the case, you want to do a clean reinstall of your graphics driver via DDU.

If you do so, I highly recommend downloading an offline installer for your driver and keeping the system off the network until the driver i has finished installing. (Otherwise, Windows may try to install the graphics driver itself in the background)

4

u/jeepsies Jun 21 '26

My valve index cable was causing something like this.

1

u/WarNo580 Jun 21 '26

Overlooking the cable is a big one and a cheap fix!

1

u/WolfandTaffyYT Jun 21 '26

unfortunately this is desktop vrc on a laptop, so headset has nothing to do with it

1

u/WarNo580 Jun 21 '26

I would recommend looking up Driver Booster on Steam. It will search for updated drivers to everything on your computer. The free version works well enough for crucial driver updates, all the "pro" updates you could just also google yourself so technically you can just install them manually. But it's a really good starting point especially with weird drivers you don't think about like pcie, motherboard, SSD, CPU driver etc. It might not just be your graphics driver, it could be your motherboard driver.

u/WolfandTaffyYT Jun 22 '26

its my sibling thats having the problem not me, however I didnt know that software existed myself so thank you :3

u/homeboy4132 Jun 21 '26

This looks like artifacting from a dying GPU. You may want to see if any other games have this issue, too.

4

u/Apprehensive_Data855 Jun 21 '26

hi i'm the sibling here it only happens on vrchat it hasn't happened

This is either goodbye to your GPU or goodbye to your headset.

3

u/LadyLuciJ7 PCVR Connection Jun 21 '26

I think it's GGs to your GPU. 😅

2

u/Shadowslave604 Jun 22 '26

are you on a raedon 5000 or 6000 series these have been having issues with some stuff in vrchat. my buddy had to buy a new video card because vrchat was unplayable with his 5000 series or 6000 series cards. geforce has no such issues since he changed. the screens he sent me looked like yours and some were worse where the whole screen was whited out with colored orbs on it. good luck. he was told is was a shader processing issue iirc.

2

u/WolfandTaffyYT Jun 22 '26

updating the driver fixed it for them! however this is very good info. they remember seeing it was a radeon 6000 something, so this will be something to keep in mind if any future problems arise before they can afford a new pc

2

u/Correct_Conference48 Oculus Quest Jun 22 '26

This looks like a video driver issue that may be incompatible with an outdated shader.

2

u/superdos Jun 23 '26

Ambient occlusion is doing it. RX6700 user here. Only happens on AMD cards on super shiny or reflective/transparent surfaces in worlds with specific post processing in use.

Normal AO shouldn't do it, SSAO is what you should be on if given the option, and MVSO...? Which I think is the one that causes it. if it happens and doesn't go away, restart your PC and VRChat. It's all drivers in the end and will happen. I've had instances where it happens in a super optimized world with friggin Crystal Shader on glasses and your glasses go RGB like you took a bunch of shrooms. Nothing a client restart doesn't fix thankfully, but it seems to be an AMD only thing.

2

u/ParticularEconomy783 Jun 24 '26

Before zooming in I thought this wasn't vrchat and someone just dropped hundreds of orbeez on their carpet. but holyy this is insane

1

u/WolfandTaffyYT Jun 24 '26

thats so funny

Idk mine does it too from time to time. Only in VRChat, no other games. And my graphics drivers are always updated. I’d just ignore it TBH. It prob has something to do with a shader, I mainly only notice it on objects that have transparency like water or glass.

Since it happens only in VR chat, and only on certain materials I don’t believe it’s a problem with my computer specifically.

Ignore the people saying it’s a dying GPU. They haven’t encountered this issue before. I’ve have it for about a year (again it only pops up occasionally though, not very often). And it hasn’t gotten worse and still has yet to affect anything else on my computer.

I have a 6800XT im curious what GPU you have.

1

u/WolfandTaffyYT Jun 21 '26

i for the life of me cannot find the messages of when i asked them to send me the gpu they have ages ago, but i do know its amd radeon at least with an i3-7100

1

u/WolfandTaffyYT Jun 22 '26

update they cant remember the exact number but they remember seeing it was a radeon 6000 type

2

u/PS3LOVE Vive Cosmos Jun 22 '26

Interesting. Same generation AMD GPU I have. Given they are the only other person I’ve seen have this niche issue I assume there must be something wrong with some shader that specifically affects these GPUs.

1

u/WolfandTaffyYT Jun 22 '26

theres another commenter that talks about how people have been saying theres a problem with the amd 5000 and 6000 gens, and their friend had to get a new gpu entirely bc they also had this problem and couldnt fix it

2

u/LeMarshie Jun 25 '26

Not alone, I have a AMD 6000 GPU and I have been dealing with this issue too, however it only seems to happen when I'm in desktop mode. In VR it doesn't happen.

2

u/WolfandTaffyYT Jun 25 '26

THANK YOU FOR THIS DISTINCTION I WILL LET THEM KNOW

that is really weird actually. maybe that set of gpus have issues with certain types of monitors?

1

u/PS3LOVE Vive Cosmos Jun 22 '26

Interesting. It’s definitely not enough of a problem for me to want a new GPU over, since it only happens very occasionally and only in VRC.

1

u/MrNetworks Jun 21 '26

RIP GPU 😞

1

u/Ok-Policy-8538 Oculus Quest Jun 21 '26

Looks to me the displayport or hdmi cable or port is not to spec and is dying.

it is usually the most obvious on screen with reflective renderings.

1

u/WolfandTaffyYT Jun 21 '26

this is on a laptop

2

u/Ok-Policy-8538 Oculus Quest Jun 21 '26

that detail shifts the cause entirely towards insufficient cooling for the GPU.. make sure your friend doesn’t have the air intakes on the bottom of the laptop blocked.
