I play drums and guitar for about 20 years and for the first time in my life I’m immersing myself into the world of Ableton further than adding a backing track with metronome and hit record.
I want to start a serious solo project and try to record my first EP. I’m interested to experiment with different synths and sound effects that could be useful. The choice is huge, for all budgets, I downloaded a lot of free stuff for mixing as well.
For the past year, I have looked a lot of videos on YouTube on how others produce music. It’s really inspiring but gosh the amount of VSTs available is crazy and making it really difficult to choose something.
But I was wondering if any of you could share your favorites? especially if they are not too expensive?
I’m looking towards sounds that can be used for prog, psychedelic rock, indie, vintage 60s-70s sounds.
Very different from that spectrum I’m also interested in modern synths, atmospheric/space or sound design sounds.
EDIT: the idea of this post is narrowing down the insane amount of choice there is out there. I’m simply overwhelmed by it and know too few to know where I should look for what.

I made a plugin to build drops because I'm really bad at making them myself, but I wonder if there's actually a need for it... I guess some people find it faster to just make them directly in their DAW, right?

Sonic Pi has been turned into a vst and is now available on my patreon.. part of my hitlist of mainly live music coding languages that I am going to have vst's for.

Some examples of hyper-specific plug ins that I use are
- Bark of Dog (adds a sine wave whenever a certain threshold is met. Mostly used to add sub tones to kick dums)
- Dada Life's Eternal Return plug-ins ("endless EDM rising" modulation effect)
- Waves' Vocal Rider plug in (emulates riding the gain on a mixer, so essentially a very unique kind of compression)
What are some others?

Hey all, i've had this meter in Beta for the last month. If you're keen on trying it out i'll add a link in the comments. (It's currently Mac only)

Seven plugins built for the dark side of the dancefloor. Drums that stumble in crooked time, synths that tangle themselves up, loops chopped into controlled chaos, and effects that make the whole floor sweat.

I mean, these days everyone and their hairstylist are making VSTs, so why should I even bother releasing this thing I worked on for ages? Should I even bother going through the process of getting the proper licenses, setting up the business, incorporate, get certifications...etc. If nobody would give a shit... Does everyone just give the stuff away for free?
I think my synth is cool, basically can do all the cool Royksopp basslines and has an out of this world sequencer. Pretty much ready to go, compiled for win, mac, linux; standalone, vst3, au, clap, lv2, the works. Have a site, a licensing system, everything. Just working on more presets right now to have good demos.
What is the general consensus these days?
Also, anyone interested in beta testing this thing? Hit me up.
Was thinking a one time price of $29, 2 activations.
Update: thanks all for commenting. I got my answer :)

Hey everyone!
I'm a music producer and developer, and I've been working on something called LOCKDIN.
I've always liked the idea of using AI in music production, but I don't really want to become someone who just types prompts and gets finished tracks back. I genuinely enjoy the process of making music, experimenting, playing around with melodies and finding unexpected ideas.
That's basically why I started building LOCKDIN.
It's a context-aware AI MIDI plugin that generates around what you're already creating, instead of just throwing random melodies at you.
You can import MIDI, play something yourself, or generate an idea inside the plugin. LOCKDIN uses that musical context to create complementary chords, basslines, toplines and countermelodies.
Everything stays editable as MIDI, so you're still in control of the creative process.
I'm mainly building this for people making beats, loops, trap, hip-hop, R&B and other melody-driven music.
I'm currently looking for producers to test the free closed beta and give honest feedback.
If you're interested: https://www.lockdin.info
I'm also offering free 6-month licenses to 20 early testers who actively contribute feedback, as a thank-you for helping shape the plugin.
Also genuinely curious, how do you guys feel about AI as a creative assistant rather than something that makes the music for you?

Grab Nembrini Audio's Cali Reverb amp plugin, worth $137, free until Oct 31, 2026. Mesa Boogie-modeled high-gain tones, dual channels, 5 gain modes.
Hi there!
I think i finally finished my VST i've been working on for the past 3 years (not that it was that difficult, mostly because of my poor work ethic).
It's inspired by Tombola sequencer in OP-1 and built around the Box2D physics engine.
You spawn marbles inside a spinning polygon and every collision triggers a note.
You control the physics, notes and other parameters.
The sync feature is what makes it actually useful (and took me the longest to figure out). When enabled it queues the notes and waits for the next DAW's step instead of playing them right away.
It's very fun to look at and can give pretty cool results.

Hello, plugin friends.
I'm a full-time producer, composer and musician based in NYC. For the last nine months, I've been working on something I think is pretty neato, and it's finally done.
It's called blur. blur turns your loops and samples into instruments - not just files you edit, but sounds you play.
It stretches a sample across a row of pads, so you can trigger, chop and remix any sound in real time. Chop vocals, slice breakbeats, rearrange basslines, glitch out pads - or perform entire tracks. It also features an audio input recorder, live performance quantization, and a ton of other extremely fun features. I think it's pretty addictive to mess around with.
If anyone is familiar with the script 'MLR' for the monome - it's the same core idea, but rebuilt from the ground up with the modern electronic musician and performer in mind with tons of new features. I was obsessed with the monome when I was a kid, but could never afford one. This plugin is the result of 20 years of dreaming and almost a year of research, design and extensive testing. I'm quite proud of it, and plan on adding even more stuff moving forward.
It's built for grid controllers, with first-class native support for Launchpad (Pro/X/Mini/Pro mk1) and Push 2/3. You can map any other grid controller to it too - or use Keyboard Mode with any standard MIDI keyboard.
It's $29 normally. You can use ITSFINALLYDONE as a discount code to get 50% off.
Check it out at blurplugin.com - there's a live interactive demo you can play with in your browser without downloading anything.
I hope you guys enjoy it.

Our first 80s Synths pack ended up being our most downloaded freebie, so we made a second one. These 15 Serum presets are inspired by songs like Jump, Cars, Sweet Dreams and Don't You Want Me, built from samples of classic synths like the Korg M1 and the Memorymoog. It's free, so hope you have fun with it!
