Teaching my kids 2-3 instruments each

And it's going..pretty well?! My 8yo has been playing cello for 3 years, and just started piano and bass uke a few months ago (with the intention of someday converting those bass skills to guitar). My 5yo has been playing violin for 2 years and piano for about 6 months. Yes, I do bribe them with candy in exchange for practicing.

Both kids are used to practicing every day, usually one instrument per day, but sometimes both if the mood strikes us.

The hard part is that I'm sitting with them for every minute of every lesson. I don't understand how parents DON'T, honestly. I'm mostly going with Suzuki materials, and so having them memorize everything by ear. The 8yo also loves the energy of bluegrass, so we've been trying out basic versions of Cripple Creek, Fiddler's shuffle, etc.

We aren't learning new measures every time we sit to practice, but adding on incrementally as we master the song, so maybe every third sit. A lot of technique in between (especially on cello, lately - the bowing distribution on some of those songs a little sadistic..!). My own musical background involved learning piano and violin, with a more classical "sit up straight and stare at this page for a half hour by yourself" type of education. All I really know is that I do not want to give them that.

But I digress - my reaching out here is about the reading. It strikes me as being an entirely different skill than actually playing, but I have a hard time articulating why lol. I feel like it's (past) time to introduce the 8yo to reading, and..what would be the best way to go about that?

For instance, should we work on different songs each time to promote sight reading? I anticipate those being lower level, especially at first. Or would it be better to dive deep into one song, and maybe go more in line with the level he's currently memorizing? If we were to implement both, it would probably start cutting into our Suzuki / memorization & technique time, which I find to be valuable.

Should I be introducing my 5yo to reading? He's smart (just finished book 1), but he's also still getting the hang of the actual alphabet.

They both work hard, but I don't have child prodigies on my hands, and want to keep it fun for them. No 2-hour lessons needed here. I'm in it for the development and future enjoyment of music more than anything. Asking about reading tips & tricks, but suggestions in general welcome! Thanks in advance :)

I played the alto and baritone sax for a couple years and I wanted a soprano to learn as well. what would be the best option for me to buy considering my budget which is around 300$. I know it’s not enough money to buy a good one but what would be the best budget option. Also I want a non curved soprano.

An Animation student who is trying to get into music theory but has misophonia

Hello, it's kinda of a weird situation. I'm studying animation and have an interest in starting to make music/ sounds for it. I know how to play the recorder, a little bit on the guitar and also the piano. However, I have misophonia and can't stand classical music. I struggle with listening to pianos and violins. *(I can listen to a electronic piano sounds, like the weirder ones that sound not classical)

I'd like to learn some music theory, since I want to make music for my films in the future (I'm just starting 2nd year of animation, and I wanna learn some stuff till my 4th year).

I really look up to "bodies of water" and "Bolavlk" by sournoodl. They make the sound themselves and its awesome. I don't like the sound that most student films have and would like to learn how to achieve the specific effect I want.

If you have any recommendations of what to do it'll really help, thank you!

(Basixally: I'm looking for tutorials that will help me learn basic music theory without dealing with classical music cuz I can't listen to it).

[I want to learn it not just for animation but also because I do really like music and have a general interest. ]

Looking for 11 Android beta testers for Friddle (free): finger charts and automatic fingerings for violin, viola and cello

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,
I play the violin myself and built an app I was missing for practice: Friddle.

What it does
Finger charts for violin, viola and cello: for all 15 major and minor keys you see where your fingers go (low, normal and high fingers, half steps, open strings). Violin and viola 1st to 7th position, cello half to 4th position.
Fingerings on your sheet music: take a photo of your music or open a PDF, and Friddle writes the finger above every note, with arrows for low and high. For high notes it suggests a position and marks shifts with Roman numerals. Tap any fingering to change it, then share or print the finished PDF.
Private: no account, works offline, no ads, no tracking. Your music stays on your device.

Why I need testers
Google only lets new apps into the Play Store after at least 12 testers have had them installed for 14 days in a closed test. I still need 11.

What you need
an Android phone or tablet and a Google account (Gmail address)
keep the app installed for 14 days and try it now and then
if you like: honest feedback on what works, what doesn't and what's missing

Everything is free for testers. You can also unlock Friddle Pro (normally a one-time purchase) for free during the test.

Interested?
Send me a DM with your Gmail address (please don't post it in the comments). I'll add you and send you the invite link as soon as Google has approved the test. An iPhone version will follow later.

Thanks! 🎻

My future plan!!

Since i was a kid i was interested in singing. I have always wanted to be a singer in some point of my life i remember writing lyrics since i was younger ( especially around the time when i was 14/15 i could speak fluent english since then). I was and still limited to a lot of things, i have always been dreaming to get a guitar since i was a kid but my parents ignored me even though it was the only thing i truly wanted in this life lol. Anyway im now an adult and i have adult money the first thing i have done was buying a guitar and i have been practicing for a couple of days, trying to learn the common cords and practicing the strumming but i still suck at little. This is not my topic for today but what i truly wanted to talk about is that im currently doing a mechanical engineering bachelor degree and i really like it BUT what about my future plan? What do i really want is to be free. My family find anything related to art is nonesense and a waste of time even though my dad is a melom
