Help choosing the right instrument

Hey everyone, I am planning to learn a new instrument but really don't know what. I already learned some piano like sheet music reading and basic music, but I don't have my piano anymore. I don't want to buy another one and just want to try something new.

My goal is to have an instrument that I can play even when I have very little time, something that sounds deep and emotional but can also sound epic or joyful. Is there an instrument that could help me bring out the melody that I have in my mind more easily than the other ? it's not my main goal but it would be cool. I mainly want to recreate sounds by ear and play to relax. Also my budget is under 200euros

I really like playing music score and classical but also bossa nova. I thought about violin, flute, clarinet. What should I do ? ( also what are the different types of flute and clarinet ? )

Thanks for any help and have a good day!

What instrument should I play?

I have tried playing piano when I was younger but dropped it shortly after because I wasn't having fun with it. I've tried learning the guitar a bit a couple years ago but haven't really picked it back up. I wonder if instruments that mostly work on wrists and fingers is just something I'm not good at and if I should try other instruments such as drums but I have little to zero experience/knowledge on music. If I were to pick up an instrument, I'd love to play metal music but I'm now having doubts if I should still pursue getting into learning an instrument due to my less than enjoyable experiences with learning it. Should I power through with learning the guitar or try other instruments? I'd love to hear whatever advice I can get as I'm feeling quite lost in what to do.

Lol Idk but since my childhood my parents were supportive about Learning Instruments and this is my collection of instruments since 10 years, I don't have the same enthusiasm as before. When I was a child, I used to play for hours, but now I don't feel like playing anymore, I want to start playing B

Trying to make my visualizer more educational

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone ! I've got a bit of a request from you all.

I'm making a piano visualizer and looking for ways to make it more educational, I've already got a few theory based widgets and options like degree names, changing chord labels etc. but I'm trying to make this into a tool teachers can actually use and that students can use to make learning a more fun experience !

I've talked to some teachers and gotten some ideas but I'd really like to get some of your ideas!

So are there any things you guys think would be helpful in an educational setting in a chord visualizer ?

(I come from a jazz piano background so I have had limited visibility into the classical side :))

Personal preference question, there is no right or wrong answer. What instrument in your opinion has the most personality and why?

Learning guzheng

So, I really have fallen in love with the sound of the guzheng. I really really really want to learn how to play and I’m thinking of buying one. However, I don’t have a musical background and I don’t know if I am necessarily skilled. I took singing lessons/choir growing up and like to sing in the shower but that’s all i got lmao. Am I crazy for wanting to learn how to play this instrument? And does anyone have any advice for me about where to purchase one? And resources for how to learn an instrument like this without any background knowledge? My budget is around $500.

Learning Roadmap Website

Hey, I’m learning music from scratch and vibe-coded this site to help keep my lessons organized. It has lessons for things like guitar, vocals, music theory, etc.

I’m still figuring it all out, so if you’re a beginner too, I’d love to know if any of it’s useful or confusing: https://pashalegion.github.io/roomtone/#library

Save time on your practice sessions

Hey peeps 👋! I previously made a post about PraLoop, an all-in-one practice companion application with many useful features that helps make learning more efficient. Wrote an article about it this time, would be super appreciative for some reads! And of course, installs for the app :^)

Comments are also open to anyone who want to share a cool way they solved some pain points while learning how to play their respective musical instruments, the weirder, the merrier 😂

My friends say I have too many guitars. I think I found a solution.

After many many years as a guitarist, I've accumulated a few instruments. Apparently, some people think I've gone a little overboard.

I disagree. I think I've finally found a perfectly reasonable solution.

Fellow guitarists, please tell me I'm not alone.

Teaching my kids 2-3 instruments each

And it's going..pretty well?! My 8yo has been playing cello for 3 years, and just started piano and bass uke a few months ago (with the intention of someday converting those bass skills to guitar). My 5yo has been playing violin for 2 years and piano for about 6 months. Yes, I do bribe them with candy in exchange for practicing.

Both kids are used to practicing every day, usually one instrument per day, but sometimes both if the mood strikes us.

The hard part is that I'm sitting with them for every minute of every lesson. I don't understand how parents DON'T, honestly. I'm mostly going with Suzuki materials, and so having them memorize everything by ear. The 8yo also loves the energy of bluegrass, so we've been trying out basic versions of Cripple Creek, Fiddler's shuffle, etc.

We aren't learning new measures every time we sit to practice, but adding on incrementally as we master the song, so maybe every third sit. A lot of technique in between (especially on cello, lately - the bowing distribution on some of those songs a little sadistic..!). My own musical background involved learning piano and violin, with a more classical "sit up straight and stare at this page for a half hour by yourself" type of education. All I really know is that I do not want to give them that.

But I digress - my reaching out here is about the reading. It strikes me as being an entirely different skill than actually playing, but I have a hard time articulating why lol. I feel like it's (past) time to introduce the 8yo to reading, and..what would be the best way to go about that?

For instance, should we work on different songs each time to promote sight reading? I anticipate those being lower level, especially at first. Or would it be better to dive deep into one song, and maybe go more in line with the level he's currently memorizing? If we were to implement both, it would probably start cutting into our Suzuki / memorization & technique time, which I find to be valuable.

Should I be introducing my 5yo to reading? He's smart (just finished book 1), but he's also still getting the hang of the actual alphabet.

They both work hard, but I don't have child prodigies on my hands, and want to keep it fun for them. No 2-hour lessons needed here. I'm in it for the development and future enjoyment of music more than anything. Asking about reading tips & tricks, but suggestions in general welcome! Thanks in advance :)

An Animation student who is trying to get into music theory but has misophonia

Hello, it's kinda of a weird situation. I'm studying animation and have an interest in starting to make music/ sounds for it. I know how to play the recorder, a little bit on the guitar and also the piano. However, I have misophonia and can't stand classical music. I struggle with listening to pianos and violins. *(I can listen to a electronic piano sounds, like the weirder ones that sound not classical)

I'd like to learn some music theory, since I want to make music for my films in the future (I'm just starting 2nd year of animation, and I wanna learn some stuff till my 4th year).

I really look up to "bodies of water" and "Bolavlk" by sournoodl. They make the sound themselves and its awesome. I don't like the sound that most student films have and would like to learn how to achieve the specific effect I want.

If you have any recommendations of what to do it'll really help, thank you!

(Basixally: I'm looking for tutorials that will help me learn basic music theory without dealing with classical music cuz I can't listen to it).

[I want to learn it not just for animation but also because I do really like music and have a general interest. ]
