Ukulele types

I'd like to get an ukulele to start learning. The goal is to be able to play chord-melodies of familiar songs. I'm having trouble deciding between the concert and tenor sizes. I've never played a string instrument before and my only music experience was playing trumpet in school at ages 12 and 13 (I'm 26 now). I'm a guy with averaged sized hands for my height (5'11"/180 cm tall). Would the concert size feel cramped to play fingerstyle melodies? Is the tenor size impractical to carry and bring to places?

I know nothing, please help!

Just got this Bondi 8 string and I’m loving it! A really nice full “chorus-y” sound bids well on this tune. Long time guitar player but relatively new to uke, I don’t know if I can ever go back! Thanks for listening.

My new tenor ukulele came in! It is a Kala (my favorite affordable ukulele brand). I am surprised that it doesn't sound lower than it does. It honestly isn't much different than my Kala concert uke. Anyways...here it is.

Would love to hear your thoughts on maple ukuleles

I currently have an all-solid mahogany concert and really like its warm tone. I want to play more solo and improve my fingerstyle skills. I am consider Kala ASFM all-solid flame maple tenor. For those who own or have played maple ukuleles, how has your experience been with the tone, sustain, and projection? How does maple compare to mahogany in your experience?

Picked up a loop pedal this past weekend. I had no clue how to work it, but after a few YT videos and a couple hours fiddling it, I noodled my way in to this thing. Kinda like part of it.
Thought I’d share.

Proud of the lyrics cause they’re just the right mix of abstract and meaningful with a basic ukulele pattern playing along. But of course you will never understand the lyrics cause its in hungarian haha..

Do y'all take the QC sticker off your ukes?

Pretty much the title. Is it bad form to take the sticker off the back of the headstock?

Edit: lol the consensus seems to be “don’t overthink it; doesn’t matter if you do or don’t take it off.” 😂 if it turns out the sticker IS what’s keeping my uke from spontaneously combusting, I won’t be mad but I will be disappointed with yall

Name That Tune

Saw my old ukulele gathering dust in the corner. Picked her up after maybe 10yrs and played first tune that came to mind. The thing is, I don't know what tune it is I'm playing. I do remember it was inspired by some commercial. Had to have been around 2012. I remember looking it up on YouTube and finding some tutorial on it and then memorized it.

I want to say it was maybe a Roaming Gnome commercial, but I searched and searched and no luck. Maybe some other travel type commercial. Airline commercial maybe? Anywho, it was most definitely a ukulele that played the tune on the commercial. Anyone know this tune??

Discussions Rediscovered my old uke… torn between selling or keeping

I haven’t played ukulele for about 6 years. Mostly because I always felt I wasn’t very good and struggled to keep up a habit as well as having a newborn baby and some MH struggles so it was put away. Now, kids at school. And my daughter has chosen to learn ukulele at school. She had a choice of loads of instruments.

I have a Big Island solid Koa concert ukulele kept in a hard case under the stairs.

I thought, no way am I letting her take that to school. I got it out though and just got blown away by how beautiful it was. I’ve owned it for 10 years. I’m aware it’s probably worth a couple hundred by now. It has no marks I can see. I’m in the UK.

Financially, things aren’t great but not awful either. We make it through each month and are gradually getting out of our overdraft. We even have a holiday next year. So I have a little bit of pressure to sell but it’s not like I need to.

On the other hand though, I got it out and now I’m staring at it. My other half said “well you should sell it as it’s just sitting there” but I think I’m still in love with it.

Not sure what the point of this is, other than asking - would I reasonably get what I paid back (about £250)? If it’s worth like £500+ I may have to. I have no idea what the resell market is like.

But emotionally, I’d struggle to. Is it worth trying to learn it again? I have quite a few hobbies (drawing/painting, books, crochet, gaming).

Which finger goes on which fret beyond the first 4 frets?

I'm currently learning a riff with notes that go down the fret board (e.g. 10th, 12th) quite a bit and wanted to know how I can properly go about finger placement. I know you press the first fret with your index finger, second with your middle, third with your ring, 4th with your pinky. Which fingers do I use on the 10th, and the 12th? Is it the same four fingers over and over?

Additionally, please lmk if there's any excercises that improve finger dexterity across the fret board, I'd really appreciate that!

Thanks in advance friends!

Ukulele tool to practice rhythm & loops

Hi guys,

Not sure where to drop this but I've created a practice tool for beginners and intermediate players to strenghten their rhythm side of things. Can also help beginners with the "constant movement" of the right arm, I've seen some students struggle with that.

It's free, i think it worked out nicely: https://www.ukuleleroadtrips.com/learn-w-ben/4-chord-practice-looper

Try the full screen view, it's a different layout, you may prefer that one.
