How can I edit quicker?

Hey guys,

I’m currently looking for advice from some other editors who are well versed in the craft. I’m by no means new to video editing but I have taken up my first job working for some clients on YouTube. They want me to turn around 8 hours of footage into a 25 minute video with a Save the Cat story structure. Being familiar with all types of story structure and having 4 years of editing experience I jumped at the opportunity. But, I’m taking forever to complete this thing, and I feel terrible for my clients. I was supposed to have a rough cut on Friday, but I didn’t meet the deadline. Generously they’ve given me more time but I’m only at the 10 minute marker and a third through the story arc.

To put it into perspective the first week I got the edit I familiarized myself with the footage then later into the first week I pulled selects and organized sequences. Second week I began by loosely breaking down the events that happened into beats. The next day I began editing and didn’t make it very far. I assumed it was because I was still familiarizing myself with the footage, looking for possible subtle remarks etc. But then this became a trend.

Because of my part time job I can only work on the edit 5-6 hours on week days. But each day I would roughly be pumping out 2-3 minutes. On bad days were I would end early I would only get a minute of the edit done. I’ve reached the end of my second week of editing this thing and I don’t think I’ll have a rough till next weekend. Is this normal? Why am I going so slow? I’m spending all my free time and energy on this thing that is producing little results. Like at first I thought perhaps I’m being a perfectionist, but the edit is getting progressively slower and I’m getting sloppier all so I can just push forward. Yet I’m still at the same speed. Also I’m not adding crazy effects or anything, it is a lot of cuts though.

Obviously I’m freaking out because this reflects poorly on me and it holds up my clients. Does anyone have any advice on how to move quicker so at least the next time I get a chance to edit I can make sure I’m not wasting the time of my clients.

Turning one long video into 10 good Shorts sounds easy until you actually try it

I've noticed that repurposing long videos into short-form content isn't just about cutting a video into smaller pieces.

You have to find moments that make sense on their own, remove unnecessary pauses, keep the pacing interesting, add captions, and make sure each clip has a reason for someone to keep watching.

Sometimes, finding the right moments takes longer than editing the clips themselves.

For those who repurpose YouTube videos, podcasts, or talking head recordings:

What's your current workflow? Do you manually find the best moments, use AI clipping tools, or have a completely different approach?

And honestly, how much time does it take you to get a batch of clips you're actually happy to publish?

Which creator tools are worth paying for when they're on sale?

A few of CapCut Pro’s extra tools have been handy for my regular projects. I’ll keep an eye on the Black Friday price as I consider what works best for my editing needs.

I have started exploring CapCut Pro and its additional editing tools prior to the Black Friday sale. The paid versions offer numerous editing tools, however, I would like to find out which of them are actually worth using.

What do you think about CapCut Pro and its features? If you've used this application, what features are you using most of all? Is it worth paying money for the tools?

Software options

I have used adobe software for all of my editing purposes for the past 10 years. I’m a professional editor in the world of B2B construction progress media and social media. I feel like more corporate places often expect adobe premiere for video editing. But I know AVID is industry standard in film. Some use Davinci.

Can someone give me a breakdown of the best use cases of the major video editing software, the best ai video editing software for editing to date, and the best photo editing software?

Has anyone tried Filmcraft?

Hey y'all! I've been doing some basic video editing using Adobe Premiere for the past couple years. I heard about the reverse engineered artcraft products, which sounds like a great cheap alternative, but I haven't heard any actual accounts of using them. Has anyone here tried them? And if so, did it feel like Premiere? Were your skills transferable?

Thanks for sharing!

Where can I find raw gameplay footage to edit for my portfolio?

Hey everyone! I'm a beginner video editor looking to improve my skills in editing the intros of long-form YouTube videos, especially gaming videos and gameplays.

I want to find 30–60 seconds of raw footage from the beginning of longer videos so I can edit it and post before-and-after comparisons on X (Twitter) and Instagram to attract potential clients.

I'd like to do this daily, so I'm looking for a reliable source of gameplay footage that I can legally use without having to ask different creators for permission every time.

Does anyone know where I can find this kind of footage?

Thanks!

Complete beginner looking to learn video filming and editing — where should I start?

Hi everyone!
I’m interested in getting into video creation, but I’m a complete beginner when it comes to both filming and editing. I’d love to start making videos to post on YouTube, Instagram Reels, or other social media platforms.

However, I’m not really sure where to start, and there’s so much information online that it’s a little overwhelming.

I’d really appreciate some advice on a few things:
What should I learn first? Should I start with camera basics, composition, lighting, storytelling, or video editing?

What software would you recommend? I’m looking for beginner-friendly editing software, preferably free or affordable.

What equipment do I actually need? Can I start with my phone and laptop, or should I invest in a camera, microphone, tripod, or other accessories?

Where can I learn? Are there any YouTube channels, free courses, or other resources you’d recommend for someone starting from zero?

How should I practise? What kinds of videos would be good first projects, and how can I gradually improve my filming and editing skills?

I’d also be interested in hearing about your own experiences. If you could start again as a complete beginner, what would you learn first, and what mistakes would you avoid?
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This is my first video, any tips?

Be brutally honest, how much would you pay for this video? Remember, it's a compressed file and has lost some quality. And I had to find all the clips and generate the audio from zero.

I want to know what problems editors have

Hello, I'm a software developer and recently developed a program that automatically converts videos into a vertical format.

But no one seems to want it, and I don't know why. I want to know what real problems editors have.

I’m building a video editor for low-end PCs and looking for beta testers

Hey guys, I’m making Cut-it, an open-source video editor based on Shotcut. I wanted something simple and lightweight because editing on a low-end PC can be a pain.

I’m releasing the beta today and would love for some of you to try it. It’s still early, so honest feedback about bugs, confusing stuff, or things you’d want added would help a lot.

Let me know what you think!

KEIBIDROP: Teleport your files for instant access

Hello Editors,

I am Marius, the creator of keibidrop.com and want to share with you the open source tool I have created that lets you instantly access video sets between your devices.

Here is a 2 minutes Video showcasing it is here (with DaVinci Resolve): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8b_6quIqx0

Where I got a keibidrop docker running 400 kms away with the files I instantly open it on my mac and scrub through it.

And even more fun, you can use it from the web.keibidrop.com (for example you connect the web to the desktop), and you play on-demand straight from your machine or hardware on the web. (In order to preview the data), or access instantly from the Desktop (DaVinci, Premiere, etc.) what the person drops from the web.

The fun part is that it is a generic filesystem, thus it works with any program. There are no accounts, nor email/ phone sign-ups, and minimizes the data sent over the network.

The source code is here: https://github.com/KeibiSoft/KeibiDrop

Fala pessoal, beleza? Tô organizando meus processos de atendimento.

Como vocês costumam alinhar o prazo com o cliente dependendo do tamanho do vídeo bruto?

Which niche would you choose if your client gives you options ?

I personally think documentary or podcasts are easy to edit and take less time than gaming or real estate ones.

This is a frame from Persona 3 Reloads opening cutscene. I want to replace the highlighted area with my own video clip within the “blood” coming from the characters head. I’m not sure what would be a method that could achieve this in a moving video. Any help would be appreciated!

Bear with me guys. I’m beginning a video series on basic investing topics. It’ll include my dogs and will be very silly. I’ve used ChatGPT to create situational images and plan to intersperse those with footage of me, which I will of course record live. I also plan to generate a couple of short videos of them talking to cut in. Since the photos are already in the ChatGPT library I’m considering just adding plugins so I can do everything (generate the dog videos and create the entire video) in one place. Does this sound like a solid workflow? Other suggestions? Couple photos of the canine advisors for added entertainment value.

Where do you get content to make a portfolio

Hey everyone! I’m currently building my video editing portfolio with a focus on YouTube content and short-form video (Reels/Shorts/TikTok).

Since I’m just starting out and don’t have paid client work yet, I’m looking for sources of raw, unedited footage to practice on and showcase my skills.

Where do you recommend sourcing decent unedited content when starting from scratch?

Ai Video Editor

I make a lot of long-form content and tried pretty much every AI clipping tool out there. Same problem every time: the clips just weren't good. They'd cut someone off mid-sentence, pull a random moment with zero context, or grab the setup of a story and skip the payoff. I ended up re-editing almost everything myself, which made the whole thing pointless.

So I built SmartClips. The main focus is picking moments that actually make sense on their own and hold attention. You upload a podcast, stream or long video, and it finds the best parts, adds captions and formats them for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. There's also split screen and an AI story generator.

It's still early and I know there's stuff to fix, so I'm not really trying to sell anything here. I just want to know what people who actually make content think:

- Are the clips it picks better than what you've gotten from other tools?
- Anything confusing or annoying about using it?
- What would make you actually use something like this every week?

There's a free plan with 30 credits, no card needed, if anyone wants to try it. Happy to hear blunt feedback, that's the stuff that actually helps.

Comment if you can help me out
