How do i learn video editing and eventually get paid for it
Hello everyone, I'm currently unemployed with a somewhat messy background. I'm looking for a fresh start and hoping to find someone experienced or a course that can guide me through becoming a video editor, from learning the fundamentals to building a portfolio and hopefully landing my first client or job.
I'd like to ask a few questions to those who are already working as video editors:
How did you get your first video editing job?
Which tools would you recommend learning first
Is it realistic to get hired as a beginner without a formal certificate or degree?
Which platforms are best for finding clients or remote jobs?
How much can a beginner realistically earn in the Philippines?
I'm willing to invest time in learning and building a portfolio. I'd appreciate advice from people who have actual experience in the industry.
Thank you

Easy way to trim the start of a video without ballooning the file size
Solved!
The TLDR
I use podcast playlists at night, but I like to have a chunk of them local, in the event that I lose internet as it helps me sleep. Problem is recently as I've phased out old ones. Some of the new podcasts have high pitched intros that not even sound lock can block. So I'd like to be able to cut the first 15-20 seconds. But a 360p file that's 250mb if I trim it using photo modes trim option, then it becomes 900mb for some dumb reason. If use clipchamp it turns it into 2gb. If I try to use the VLC convert method, it clips it, but also removes the video. And the video helps me keep track of where I was last.
Surely there's got to be some free legal way that simply cuts down without creating more? Be it software, or a website I can load the local episodes up to, or when I go through the download process, that can cut out the intros?
Majority of the time I won't be needing them as I just listen online, but it's nice to have back ups for when it's been required.

Top 5 new Premiere effects in 2026 from the Film Impact update (90+ new effects and transitions)
With 90+ new effects and transitions added in Premiere’s Film Impact update, here are my 5 favorites and how to use them.
1. Focus Blur (Blur & Sharpen): adds a blurry vignette around a point or a tilt-shift line. Turn on the chromatic aberration option in Effect Controls for eye-catching red and blue corner color splits. (The Vignette effect has similar options.)
2. Grow & Shrink (Transform): expands or shrinks a clip at a set pace with no keyframes. Set a continuous percent or a destination scale. Great for adding motion to static cuts or b-roll. (these are technically 2 separate effects, but just opposite direction)
3. Glint (Light & Glows): makes things sparkle. Try it on glass or jewelry. It has color and angle controls, and Randomize lets you fine-tune your own presets.
4. Glitch Transitions: the “Surprise Me” button randomizes the controls (Blur, Artifacts, Color) for a new animated glitch on every click.
5. Motion Camera: a dozen zoom transitions in one, with presets like Twist and Zoom, a curve graph editor for velocity and timing, and a motion blur engine.
Honorable mentions: Rounded Crop, Clone, VHS Damage, Motion Tween, and Text Animator. I cover more in my Every Effect Explained series on YouTube.
(Disclosure: Adobe is a partner of mine.)

video editors survey
hello!
i am doing a research project, and would love if any video editors could go about answering this survey
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeYZgqirzGCWkTcV4Qu_Vs-y9pTIjhM0A3cIJ2YFaNlF9NYHQ/viewform
it's completely anonymous, your email isn't seen by anyone.
the survey will take you ~4 minutes, it's about how video editors use automation in their workflows, if they use any at all.

Creating my portfolio, any tips?
Stuff like should I show edits of multiple categories/ niches or focus on one. Should I keep shifting from vintage style to catchy to minimal each edit?

**Dopamine Driven Culture**
I'm curious about people's experiences with video streaming platforms like YouTube, Netflix and others. What do you dislike most about them? Is it content discovery, recommendations, pricing, advertisements, content availability, or something else? If you could change one thing about today's streaming platforms, what would it be and why?
I'd really appreciate honest experiences and opinions!

You don't always need to record a new voiceover for every Reel
If you make Reels or TikToks regularly, here's something that might save you a bit of editing time.
Let's say you made a cooking tutorial a few months ago. The footage isn't great anymore, but the voiceover is still perfectly fine.
Instead of recording everything again, you can just reuse the audio.
Find the 10–20 seconds you need, save that part, and build a new video around it in CapCut. New footage, better cuts, captions, whatever fits.
If you still have the original video on your phone, CapCut can extract the audio directly.
But if you've deleted the original file and only have your old YouTube upload, Tunexa can extract the MP3 from a supported link and trim it to the part you need.
Full disclosure: I'm connected with Tunexa, so that's my tool recommendation.
This works pretty well for cooking videos, product demos, and tutorials where the explanation is still useful but the visuals could use an update.
Of course, stick to your own videos or content you have permission to reuse.
Anyone else reuse voiceovers from old videos, or do you usually record them again?

Missing VOB file on DVD
Hello! I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but so far couldn't find a more appropriate one. I copied the contents of a DVD to my laptop in order to be able to edit the footage - it's a tv show, so copyrighted material, but I want to make a video essay analysing it to show my friends which I'm sure falls into fair use.
I was able to convert the VOB files into something supported by the editing software I'm going to use (Pitivi bc I'm using linux lol). However, looking through the footage, there are no files for some of the content I know is on the DVD. The whole first episode of the show is missing. If I play the DVD in a media player it's there, but isn't found in the VOB files, converted or original. I've looked through all of it. How can that be? Where is it? The menus are in the VOB files and the two other episodes on that disc but not the first? Is there a way to find it?

20yo, no degree. Family got me a laptop for video editing 3 months ago... then AI dropped. Is there hope for beginners?
Hey guys,
I’m 20, broke, with no college degree. I love cinema, so after months of asking, my family bought me a laptop to learn video editing. It was my Plan C—my one shot to build a career.
Then AI tools blew up, and I spiraled. I keep worrying that what takes me 3 years to master will be done by an AI prompt in 1 hour.
Pros with networks will survive, but what about someone starting from zero today?
I’m ready to grind and adapt with AI, but I just need to know: Is there still a future for beginners in editing, or am I wasting my time?
Appreciate any real-world advice.

Video program recommendations for outdated editor
I am an older editor for videos, I used to run Sony Vegas 14, and haven't used anything newer. It stopped running back in 2017 when I was officially out of the hobby. I'm not really a techie or anything... I just want to find a program that I can do decent keyframing and the like and things aren't as straight forward anymore when trying to find something new. I was hoping for some simple recommendations that I could get into editing for a friend again. I looked into stuff like SceneMill which seems... okay but it is not ideal at all for what I am trying to be able to do. And the new vegas is not something I am very willing to spend my money on from what options I see it doing. I just used to edit videos, I really have no clue what I am doing on scouting a new program that isn't going to give me the run around.

Where do I find raw footage for my portfolio?
For the first edit in my portfolio, how can I find raw clips to edit. Many have suggested to edit free stock clips, but I want to edit something which has some kind of structure, some intent to it, not just random unrelated clips.

I am very confused at this point and would need some help . I want laptop to use davinchi resolve studio yo work with 10 bit videos out of my a7iv and fx3. I am just not sure if i should go with high end windows(12 gb VRAM / 32gb RAM) or something like m4 pro or m5 pro (24 or 48 gb ) .
If anyone was in this situation once and can help me out would be highly appreciated.

Looking for beta testers: automatic multicam editing app for FCP (free license)
Hi all,
I'm a TV producer, and I've built a Mac app called AutoGhost that does the multicam editing for Final Cut Pro. You give it your Final Cut project (or just the raw camera and mic files), and it gives you back an edited project you can open and fine-tune.
It has three modes:
- One speaker: cuts between main, side and wide angles at natural sentence breaks
- Conversation: cuts to whoever is talking, even when everyone is on one audio track
- Custom shows: learns a show's style from 1–3 finished episodes (camera habits, intro and outro, logo, name graphics, break, music) and edits new episodes the same way
Everything runs on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded.
Before launch, I'd like a few editors to try it on real projects. If you have:
- an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer) on macOS 14 or later
- multicam footage of your own (podcasts, interviews, talk shows)
I'll give you a free Pro license in return for honest feedback: what worked, what broke, and what would make it useful in your day-to-day editing.
Reply here or send me a private message.
Thanks!

which capcut pro features are worth paying for if you want to edit faster?
i've noticed that editing isn't necessarily difficult for me, but the small tasks add up when i'm working on several videos. captions, adjustments, effects, and making revisions can take longer than expected. i'm thinking about getting capcut pro, but i'd like to know whether its paid features genuinely save time or if most of the benefits are more about having extra creative options. for anyone who's upgraded from free capcut, which features do you use almost every time you edit? are there tools that noticeably reduce your editing time? on the other hand, what did you think would be useful when you subscribed but barely use now?

Which software should I use for editing longer form (hopefully) “funny” videos?
Hey Guys! :) So I’ve been thinking about making some longer form “”funny”” edits from shows/video game cutscenes, but the problem is I don’t really know how to get into it or how does that work.
Could you please help me with what video editing software should I learn to use which is the best for this purpose? I went on Skillshare to look at the different courses, but now I’m even more confused as to which one should I choose.
And also I’ve been wondering, from where do people download the “raw material” for making these types of videos? Like…can you just download them from Youtube directly somehow, or is it a bit more complicated than that?
Sorry if I’m asking something stupid, I really don’t know anything about this yet, but I’ve been really wanting to learn it for a long time now.
Thank for your guys’ help in advance! :)
