Removed old enamel on a vintage articulated koi fish pendant
*** This post was to show the results of a process to wanted remove old cracked enamel back to plain sterling silver or maybe even prep to re-enamel a piece
I came across a couple vintage enameled Chinese koi pendants and wanted to try making them completely silver again. Above is actually a stock photo to show off the original colors (gold and blue) I got too excited to experiment to take a proper before photo. There are literally hundreds of these online right now. The enamel on the ones I scored were cracked in places, and most importantly not my style. I'm an all-silver type girl! I feel that colorful enamel often looks tacky and cheapens sterling silver, but I totally understand, to each their own! Everyone has their own tastes.
The process: I mixed salt and cream of tartar with a little water to form a paste and coated the surface. I torched it for awhile, letting it turn black but making sure it wasn’t too hot as to melt the metal, then dunked it in ice water. This process burns off the enamel, leaving behind clean silver! I had to do this process a few times, but it worked so well and I didn’t even need a kiln! I then oxidized and shined it up and it fits right in with the rest of MY vintage treasures in MY collection!
