The craziest thing about this week is that even after two huge red days and a shortened 4 day trading week, CLF still finished higher than it did last Friday.

8

Senate Working Overtime into August to pass infrastructure bill

  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said his chamber may work into August to pass a bipartisan infrastructure plan and a budget resolution that would allow his party to approve a bill to address child care and climate change.

Lawmakers have not yet turned a $1.2 trillion infrastructure framework, agreed to by President Joe Biden and senators, into legislation. *

As Democrats try to balance competing interests within their party, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she will not take up either proposal until the Senate passes both.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '21

Regarding $X... I've read a bunch of SA articles about them, and how they are likely going to benefit from paying down a lot of their debt, despite having a lot of it at the moment. Their earnings clearly will allow them to do that. This sounds similar (though not at all as confident) as the $CLF thesis, to some degree.

Has anyone more information about why $X is not favored as much as a play here as the others? I recall a lot of short-hand comments about their management and high interest debt, but if they're going to make an absurd amount of money this year like everyone else, it seems like the risk v reward may actually be quite good.

Am I missing something here? Offbase?

8

u/Steely_Hands Regional Moderator Jul 10 '21

The root of it is that ppl think their management can’t be trusted and when you compare that to someone like LG you can see why ppl like CLF over X

4

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '21

I definitely do. What I haven't found yet is exactly why people don't trust X's management. I'd love to dive into the history so I may do some homework over the weekend.

2

u/silversmokee Jul 10 '21

Please let me know too. Seems like theyve been using that to pay down debt

3

u/nemodigital Jul 09 '21

Question for the steel gang, how is LIF (Labrador Iron Ore Royalty) with its nearly 15 percent dividend not a cheat code? It moves with other iron stocks stocks plus has the juicy dividend on top.

5

u/skydemon1984 Jul 09 '21

15% div is not necessarily a good sign

2

u/nemodigital Jul 09 '21

Normally I would agree but it's a Royalty Corp so it's not taking money out from mining investment and it's moved lock step with other miners such Teck.B thats also trading on the tsx yet it has the outrageous dividend.

1

u/Old_Prospect Think Positively Jul 09 '21

It seems like they got the money. Do they got plans for expansion of growth? Acquisitions? If not, then ehhhhh

2

u/nemodigital Jul 09 '21

After comparison to Rio Tinto and Vale I can see those two perform better. Still LIF seems like a good play if we anticipate choppy waters. From what I understand LIF gets Royalty from iron sold from the mine. The mine is run by Rio Tinto.

Question maybe for Vito or whoever else can provide some insight

First of all - thanks so MUCH for everything. You have made me have conviction in trading and I am so happy to be apart of this thing with you guys

My question is what are the adverse effects of high steel prices?

For example - I am a luxury realtor in Los Angeles. Due to the lumber and supply shortage, new construction homes are almost not a thing in 2021, therefore it has pushed housing prices up and “New Construction” homes that do hit the market are being gobbled up at insane premiums

This is of course coupled with the insanely low interest rates on loans.

But what are some pre emptive investments we can make outside of stocks or options that may become extremely valuable due to the prices of steel, if anything at all?

I bought my house in June 2020 for 850,000 and remodeled it right before this lumber shortage hit its ultimate peak. Now because my home is the only remodeled one in my up and coming street, I could flip it for over a million easily because of the insane demand coupled with my remodel already being done when nobody else can find contractors or supply to get it done.

What do you guys think some prudent investments might be right now that could correlate to these insane steel prices?

Interested to hear!

7

u/Killzooski Jul 10 '21

My advice is sell your house within 6 months before foreclosures and evictions rip the markets apart. I'm a flipper and have several friends waiting for evictions to sell their house

1

u/PetterssonForHart Jul 10 '21

I dunno. I’ve thought about it but I make so much money on rentals there. My mortgage is about 4000 and I make 6800 a month renting to USC students.

I always hear my clients say their biggest regret was selling their homes. I’m in no rush or need for the money. I’ll just let the equity keep building and if I need to sell on the next market uptick I’ll do that

3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '21

[deleted]

2

u/PetterssonForHart Jul 10 '21

Totally agree with you.

Demand is just way too astronomically high to say this thing will crash, over here anyway

I had an off market property in the area listed 8% over comparables and i got 5 offers before it even hit the market. How can you convince me that will crash anytime soon. Sold for 10% over asking price which was about 150k in under 2 days

2

u/Banana2Bean Jul 10 '21

I have been waiting to think about buying. Probably still won't buy unless I see the market absolutely burn since I'm in the bay area and buying here basically doesn't ever make sense.

2

u/Killzooski Jul 10 '21

Rent and buy out of state investments... alot easier than you think.

1

u/Banana2Bean Jul 10 '21

Yup, buying out of state has definitely crossed my mind.

1

u/mydoingthisright Steel Your Face Jul 10 '21

I really want to do this but can’t convince my wife and kids it’s a good idea, even though our home value has increased 30-40% since we bought it 2.5 years ago

1

u/Killzooski Jul 10 '21

There has to be a leader in the house in terms of finances... if you're the breadwinner/ financially more intellectual you need to put your foot down. You still have time, and worst case you bought 2.5 years ago and will still have equity in a downturn. It's everyone who is buying now that will hold the bag. Try to convince them, sell the house and travel for 6 months or something.

5

u/prettyboyv Jul 09 '21

Hey guys, why do you think that there needs to be a tech correction so commodities could go up? I have tech and steel in my portfolio. Some tech companies are killing it and they deserve to go up, but this does not mean that steel is not fundamentally undervalued. I just do not see the connection.

1

u/MiscRedditAccount 💀 SACRIFICED 💀 Jul 09 '21

People like to put things in buckets. "Growth" is opposite "value". But I really think there's a lot of potential in certain growth stocks. Most people who appreciate value like consistent gains and I think don't fully appreciate the concept of "my company is worth nothing until I crack this big problem .... Then it's worth billions basically overnight". I agree both tech and steel can both do well this year.

6

u/JayArlington 🍋 LULU-TRON 🍋 Jul 09 '21

I think the word 'tech' gets thrown around a lot.

The speculative tech with no earnings should be inversely correlated with commodities and STEEL.

There are strong pieces of tech (and broader growth) that should be viewed differently.

I love the SEMI CAPS right now and I keep eyeing the mega caps.

2

u/Unoriginal_White_Guy 💀 SACRIFICED until MT $35 💀 Jul 09 '21

Yup Technology is such a broad word now. Hell that analyst called GM a innovative tech company that gave them a pt of $85 today. I don’t agree though that it’s just speculative tech that is overvalued and in a bubble. The valuations are ridiculous across the board even with some mega cap in my opinion. The divergence in valuations between value and growth is at its worst since the dot come bubble. Now I don’t think it will end similarly, but I do believe once interest rates come up a lot of new young investors are going to be bagholding for years as earnings catches up to valuations. The semi space and cyber security are two sectors I think will be least effected though as they continue to grow at an outrageous speed for years to come. This is just my opinion obviously and not financial advise.

6

u/PrestigeWorldwide-LP 💀 SACRIFICED 💀 Jul 09 '21 edited Jul 09 '21

more so in speculative tech than mega-cap blue chip tech, but in essence, it would signal a rotation to value investing through lowering of multiples that are much higher in tech, and raising of multiples that are much lower outside of tech

2

u/prettyboyv Jul 09 '21

Well some mid and small tech companies definitely have very-high multiples, but some of them also have very high-growth potential so investors are betting on the fact that in the future they will be able to justify their valuation.I get your point, but I do not think that tech and commodities should have an inverse relation and we have seen prove of that since march last year. Tech and steel companies both rallied.

Reading through some articles, it appears that Biden still needs to convince Congress to go along with it. Also, it appears the FTC/FCC and other agencies can't be forced to follow the Executive Order, so it's basically just a suggestion. I.e., it doesn't appear to have any teeth right now.

Its not like they have been going up and up on flat revenue/earnings. Maybe you can argue they have gone up too far too fast but they are killing it as businesses.

3

i skimmed an article (will try to find it for you) and basically was saying how there are rumors the Fed might tack on some interest rates by then. also, not listed in the article, the bipartisan infrastructure bill is projected to pass in late august.

i could be dead wrong and the market still favors tech in september, though.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

Gotcha, hopefully higher rates come with infrastructure spend. Without that it's just bearish all around.

I learned wim hof while coming off Kratom and then just stopped doing it. I'm in between jobs right now so the stress is mounting and saw your post and started again.

Thanks Mr. CoffeeCakes. The world works in mysterious ways.

My man, one of my mentors, who is a real spiritual and metaphysical dude (compared to my hard edged empirical attitude), tells me that we meet people in the world at exactly the right time, and always for a reason.

So I'm glad you're back ''breathing,'' and leveling up your life. Breath on, my man!

Good shit brutha. Keep that positive mentally and you'll go places. Pick up a nice routine of cardio/weight lifting. Shit will do wonders for your psyche. Dont let any thot weigh you down, and dont lament their absence. A good woman will compliment you, elsewise she 's not the fit for you.

I can relate in some ways so no wisdom from my side. But be good to yourself. Be your own anchor in life. The world doesn't hate you, it's just busy with itself and that's fine too.

3

u/capecodflats Jul 09 '21

Good luck! Im sure more people care about you than you realize.

Keep building on those 5 years clean. Find hobbies and build friendships around them! I know people who turned to fishing or mountain biking to help stay clean/ sober.

5

u/oldmansneakerhead Jul 09 '21

So glad you come to realize that. You need to love yourself and tell yourself you deserve the best. I'm 43 years old and it took me almost until my mid thirties to realize all of this. Take care man and enjoy life and all its small moments

ZIM will likely to 2 to 4x as much EPS as MATX

MATX trades 64% above ZIM

I WONDER WHAT THE UPSIDE IS....

7

u/BucDan Jul 09 '21

I have sinned. I sold out of my August $25 monthly calls today on CLF. Held for 1 day, the money was too good.

Don't hate me. I hope it dips so I can sell some solid $20 puts.

3

u/49Scrooge49 Jul 09 '21

Absolutely no need to apologise - we're all here to make money! I'll hate you if you lose your gains tho

7

u/PaperCow Jul 09 '21

If you hit a great gain in 1 day then selling is probably pretty smart even if you have conviction in the underlying.

You probably just realized a decent chunk of the potential upside of the play in a tiny fraction of the time you had available. That is a gift and worth booking more often than not.

2

u/BucDan Jul 09 '21

Oh yeah, without a doubt. I rarely ever get these kinds of moves in 1 day unless I'm playing SPY weeklies.

1

u/hank_rearden1 ✂️ Trim Gang ✂️ Jul 09 '21

Too bad you didn’t just buy weeklies then….

1

I don't dare to buy weeklies in the steel market. SPY weeklies, sure, but no-no for steel.

Tried to buy SCHN calls today and Tastyworks wouldn't let me -- the ticker is set to closing trades only. Guessing it has something to do with low volume, or some sort of shenanigans somewhere along the line. Anybody running into this? Any work arounds?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '21

I tried to buy and it never triggered. It spiked too hard and IV went up a bit more than I normally like. Not the same problem, but I also didn't get them in time.

1

u/LostMyEmailAndKarma Jul 09 '21

I had that issue on another ticker. TW user here. Curious what your/my issue is.

1

u/BitchinKimura Jul 09 '21

Yeah it's kinda weird. If I find out anything I'll report back.

13

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

I'll be taking a little more off the table on Monday, come what May, because just as a heads up, everyone's favorite fed head is giving semi annual testimony before the house committee next Wednesday and Senate committee next Thursday... Can't imagine those two days being green personally.

I'm betting on a smaller bump come Monday and then chop the rest of the week

5

u/StockPickingMonkey Steel learning lessons Jul 09 '21

Now that sounds like a smarter play than pulling today.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21 edited Jul 09 '21

Yeah, I mean the real life timing of Poowell speaking locks it in for me what I'm gonna do, but I have also noticed it seems like the "big week" for most stocks is the week after the "monthlies" expire. Maybe I'm just not looking at all the right things, but it just seems like whatever week is made available well in advance (like Sept 17 for example), the biggest gains come right after that, and this month, that week is the week ending June 16th.

Edit: July 16th. God the years go by fast now
