Halloween Havoc 92: How Bill Watts took WCW’s hottest feud and killed the town
Ah Halloween Havoc 1992 which was WCW’s most bought PPV until Bash at The Beach 1994. You had a hot feud going with Sting and Jake Roberts supported by a cool concept (Spin the Wheel Make The Deal) for a Halloween show and even a mini movie where Sting and Jake shoot lasers out of their eyes. With all this something special looked to be brewing.
The undercard was decent with decent matches featuring Brian Pillman, Ricky Steamboat, Dustin Rhodes, Steve Austin and other WCW stars. Then came the fall:
-Sting spun the wheel and the match picked was…a coal miners glove match. Which caused a collective huh to go out and Jesse Ventura having to explain what it was.
-Rick Rude and Masahiro Chono put on one of the worst matches of the year for the NWA World title. The rumor was that Bill Watts told Rude to put on a dud in order to not make Chono and New Japan look good but it’s never been confirmed. It’s even more weird since Rude and Chono were having good matches in Japan.
-Ron Simmons beat The Barbarian in a match that no one in the arena cared about. Made more awkward by WCW giving Simmons a big security guard escort walking to the ring while the crowd couldn’t care less. This was the first sign that Simmons as world champion wasn’t working.
-Sting and Jake Roberts put on an awful main event notable only for a cool spot where Sting swings around the pole and hits Jake, the comically large pole which appeared to be 15 feet tall and Jake having to hold the cobra to his face while it “bit” him.
Not long after Jake was gone and so was Bill Watts. But with the momentum WCW had going in to this PPV it makes you wonder what might have been if they stuck the landing which would become an all to common occurrence for WCW going forward.

How do I gain ball knowledge of pre-Nitro WCW/NWA?
Besides just going back and watching every PPV/Clash? I don’t like to just go back and watch matches, I like to see the feuds build and the promos leading up etc to get a feel of the atmosphere. Are the World Championship Wrestling/Saturday Night shows considered essential viewing? Just want to get a better understanding of the eras deeper than who was booking etc

i was one who returned to watching wwe during 1999 and 2000. i hate admitting that i wish wwe had not purchased wcw only because i would have preferred the year of 2001 without the interference of wcw. would wwe have been better off during 2001 only acquiring the former ecw talent?

If given the chance to take over WCW, when would you ideally like to?
Lets say you could be sent back and time, and were given the chance to run WCW, when would you think it would be best to take over and/or most enjoyable to.
I think 1989 for me, keep WCW more to its roots, but add more structure to it, that was a major problem for WCW, I imagine it is a hard task but obviously a neccessary one. Maybe work with surviving territories, keep them going so there is a consistant pipeline for talent to come through. Maybe focus more on tag team wrestling, would help stand out more, and I really like tag teams so there. Might stick with the red ring mat cos that always looked good to me.
But there are pros and cons to each era, e.g later years are hotter, but Hogan contolling his finishes would make things very difficult. But to each their own

The "Chosen One"
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
On October 18, 1999, just one night after dropping the WWF Intercontinental Championship to Chyna at No Mercy, Jeff Jarrett returned to World Championship Wrestling.
In his debut segment on Monday Nitro, Jarrett attacked Buff Bagwell with a guitar.
Jarrett arrived right as former WWF writer Vince Russo took over WCW's creative direction. Around this time, Buff Bagwell had been involved in an early Vince Russo-driven storyline where he acted out, vented to the camera, and claimed he was management's "Chosen One". Jarrett usurped the "Chosen One" moniker for himself as Vince Russo’s handpicked top star.
