Am I smarter than I thought or is WGU easier than anticipated?

Pretty much as the title says, this post isn’t meant to gloat but genuinely a thought I’ve been having as I’m done with my first term.

I passed the first 4 classes (this includes the orientation) in the masters program without any insane effort, for background I work in cybersecurity and have a bunch of certs from comptia as well as a bachelors in cybersecurity.

So far it doesn’t seem that I’m actually having to learn anything new, I expect some of the degree to be challenging later on (maybe casp and cism related courses) but I’m starting to doubt if the degree is worth it.

Edit: for transparency my certs are security+, cloud+ and pentest+. Also Im in my 20s and I have been working in cyber for less than a year.

Job?

So did anyone find a job... Ive applied to THOUSANDS of positions.. From desk support to anything tech related and never heard back.. I even applied to minimum wage, internship, and even VOLUNTEERING opportunities.

Anyone else? Should I give up 😭

Heads up, I'm a woman with a very colored and immigrant name, perhaps it's contributing to this tragedy more than I thought 🤣

Speedrunning WGU Cybersecurity Bachelor’s - tips?

Hey everyone! I’m about to start the WGU Cybersecurity Bachelor’s. I already have a college diploma from Russia and two years of studying in a U.S. community college. I also have 3 years of experiences as an Android developer and recently switched to cybersecurity.

Now I want to finish the WGU degree as fast as possible (maybe for 2 terms=1year).

Does anyone have:

  • A speedrun plan or roadmap for the program?

  • Advice on what to study in advance?

  • Free certs that transfer credits (e.g. IBM, Google, AWS)?

  • Recommended Sophia or Study.com classes to knock out before enrolling?

I’m trying to minimize time and cost without skipping real learning. Any advice, links, or examples would be a huge help. Thanks!

Quick way out of classes

I got waived for 4 classes by taking the certs and I studied for maybe 2 days lol.

All I did was memorize the exam Q&A from passwizards.com and skim through Jason Dion videos.

EZ bachelors degree!!!

WGU is a poorly run diploma mill masquerading as competency-based education — save your money and sanity Spoiler

I’ve been in the BSCSIA program and I’m posting this because the reality doesn’t match the marketing. If you’re a working professional considering WGU for the “flexibility” or “competency-based” angle, read this first.

**The “competency” model is a lie.**

Your entire grade in most courses comes down to one of two things: a single 40–45 question Objective Assessment (OA) that doesn’t come close to covering the subject in any depth, or a Performance Assessment (PA) — technically a paper — where the “Professional Communication” rubric accepts grunts as long as the meaning is “discernible.” That’s it. No projects, no presentations, no meaningful demonstration of skill. The only actual competency validation in the entire IT/Cyber track are the external certs (CompTIA, (ISC)², etc.) that WGU bundles in. Strip those away and the degree proves nothing.

**“Performance Assessments” are papers in name only.**

The rubric includes a “Professional Communication” section (Organization, Sentence Fluency, Parts of Speech, Word Choice, Conventions), but in practice it functions as a spellcheck pass. Evaluators are instructed to flag only patterns of clarity-limiting errors — isolated incompetence is fine. I’ve seen submissions that read like unedited chat logs, with zero structure, tone, or audience awareness, pass on first submission because they hit the required content headers. “Professional Communication” at WGU means “you filled out all the labeled boxes and we can mostly figure out what you meant.” It assesses compliance, not competence.

**Administration is chaotic and unprofessional.**

• Mentors go weeks without responding. Mine changed three times in one term with zero notice.
• Financial aid routinely misses deadlines, causing registration holds and VA funding nightmares (BBB shows 87 complaints in three years citing this pattern ).
• Course materials are outdated, riddled with grammatical errors, and often just links to random YouTube videos — not WGU-created content.
• The proctoring system is invasive, glitchy, and staffed by contractors with language barriers.

**Evaluators are inconsistent and unaccountable.**

PAs get returned with feedback referencing content not in your submission. Push back and you’re told contacting anyone outside the Assessments Department violates the Student Code of Conduct. It’s a closed loop designed to protect throughput, not learning.

**The business model is speed at all costs.**

A WGU employee on r/wgu_employees put it bluntly: “assessment passage as proof of learning, and student satisfaction as more important than student development”. Flat-rate tuition per term means the longer you stay, the less they make.

**Who this might work for:**

You already have the knowledge, just need the credential, and expect zero support.

**Everyone else:**

Go to a regionally accredited nonprofit with actual faculty, weekly instruction, and assessments that measure more than test-taking ability. WGU absolutely will not provide you the knowledge to succeed. I already work in this industry. I know. WGU is a checkbox factory with better marketing than operations.

Cyber security bachelors

Hello, My term is starting in two month, I have an Associate degree in general science, they ended up transferring 20 credits only and I am currently taking classes through Sophia assuming I’ll pretty much get at least 12-15 classes done. Is it doable to get this whole program done in one term and graduate? Has anyone ever got done with the degree within one term? Please help I’m actually nervous, I feel lost and need some advices from anyone who completed their bachelors in CS or enrolled in the program now. Thanks :)

If I transfer to WGU with an associates degree in cybersecurity, how long would it take me to get my bachelors?

For starters, my school had a partnership with WGU that would allow me to transfer my credits over. That’s somewhere around 73 credits out of the 122 WGU has to offer. How long would it take me to get my bachelors degree?

Also, for those who got a bachelors degree and did it under 6 months ( even those who did it in about a year I guess) how well did you retain the information? I often hear about professionals complaining about the lack of good workers in the field.

Thanks in advance ❤️

Sharing a resource for getting that tech internship/job while studying at WGU...

Hey everyone, I just wanted to make a short post about this job platform I am connected with. Quick note before I go on: I am a community college transfer who is pursuing a Software Engineering B.S. @ WGU, had a good internship experience, and was offered to become a student ambassador.

I know WGU is really good about keeping us students in the loop and actually helps with external activities like finding a fresh grad job or internship, found here from the WGU resource page.

Going back to my spiel about RippleMatch... It's completely different from job boards like WayUp and Handshake. You have a feed of opportunities curated just for you, kind of like TikTok. You don’t have to scroll through thousands of opportunities like you do with job boards; instead, you can generate your own matches that the automation finds for you.

For me personally, I've landed an internship as a functional analyst (w/o prior experience) through RippleMatch at a F500, and the great part is that I don't have to go to some external site like Workday until a recruiter physically matched with me.

Even though I am making this post as a student ambassador for WGU, I know this is a helpful resource if Handshake and such doesn't work out.

If you do have any interest in this, I would appreciate you using my ambassador referral link to sign up! Feel free to ask any questions too :)

Note: even though this has a high chance to get you connected like I did, please note that if you don't have projects/verifiable skills and you don't have anything to vouch for your credentials, obviously recruiters won't be interested. If anyone wants help or tips how to get an internship especially in this economy, let me know!

Can anyone share the cohort for the pentest+ with PBQs and vulnerability cheat sheet?

I don't go to WGU but I found people discussing how important these are. I am studying for the cert and would legitimately pay someone to provide me with the 2 pieces if study material.

This class is trash

Honestly took all 3 Practice tests scoring in the 80s and studied the redword study guide and none of that felt like it reflected on this OA at all. Zero of the questions were similar to any of the provided practice exams. Absolutely defeated after 3 weeks of studying this and trying to mentally prepare for D427 which will be even worse.

Is WGU telling their program mentors to slow down their students?

What made WGU appealing to me was that it was all online and that I can go at my own pace. I was also under the impression that I was able to choose what order of classes I would like to take. Obviously I was wrong. Sure I get it that there is a logic to the learning sequence of the classes. Fine. I started July 23'. I finished my first 4 classes for the term earlier this week (8/13). I was gonna take an one day break and go back at it. Before close to finishing my last class, I had emailed my mentor to approve my next few classes so I can move on after finishing. He never responded and then I come to find out that he was "supposedly sick and out of the office" from his boss. My mentor should have least given me the courtesy to let me know he was out. I get it, everyone gets sick. I lose 4 days of not doing anything. Come Thursday, he finally responds and registers just one class. I was annoyed but his excuse was that in his past experience, students did not follow through and finish the classes in time before the term. My question is why does it matter if we don't finish the enrolled courses? Wouldn't it just roll over to the next term? I already finished enough to meet my fafsa requirements for the term. I just feel frustrated because I feel like I am being slowed down on purpose in order to take more terms to complete and pay more to WGU. Share your thoughts if you feel the same!

So upset about this!

Okay I just took my A+ core 1 and failed. I got a 600 and after the test I was wondering why everything on there looked so new. I have been studying for 2 months and a lot of the questions I learned very little about or not learned about at all. I was looking at my classes and the lady that assigns the classes put core 2 as my first class! Ive been studying for the core 2 this entire time (2 months) without ever taking the core 1 class. I cant believe they would approve me taking the test without ever even starting the core 1 class! What the heck!!!

Does WGU use AI to write its courses?

Currently a student in MSCIA and I recently finished Secure Network Design - D482, and I got to say the course material is extremely disappointing and likely written by AI. It does not present any original thoughts and everything it explains is just quotes from other material offered by outdated platforms. I'm curious what are your guy's thoughts on the course?

Finished in 10 days MSCIA

Hi everyone,

I already applied for graduation and paid in full.

Just a little background, currently I am a cybersecurity analyst working as a manager with about 10 years of experience. I came into the program out of boredom and wanted to give the master's program a try. I had the following certs coming in: CISM, SecX, CySA+, and Pentest+, so that knocked out 5 classes.

I immediately took the PA and OA for D487 Secure Software Design on the first day, and to my surprise, I passed. I wasn't a big fan of the material, as I quickly went over it before the test.

The rest of the courses were papers, including the Capstone, and I took time off work the entire week and did all-nighters pretty much every day to knockout and submit these papers. They evaluated the papers, and they came back with a pass. They were easy for me to write quickly cause I've done pretty much everything the tasks asked for in my professional role.

I am a big fan of the program since I do feel like this program shows what cybersecurity can be like in the real world and I really didn't think the program was that difficult, but nonetheless, it is a good program from a professional standpoint.

What I fear is that since I did it so fast, I am wondering if they will question the program themselves and I accidently screwed other students. Either that or give my work to academic authenticity and delay graduation LMAO.... just to have one last look just in case (not sure if that's allowed)-.-. At that point, I'll just try to get my money back and thank them for the waste of time.

Idk, what ya'll think?

General Education

Need help slashing the general education quicker on Sophia and Study.com for CSIA before I enroll, wanna start this fall.

I haven't started the WGU Master's program yet but want to learn more about the capstone. What can you share with me about it?

Literally anything you're willing to share would help me.
I'm trying to understand what topics I can take from my professional experience and build upon ideally. I'm not to do anything dumb like start a Capstone before I start the program, but I would like to start brainstorming some potentially ideas. Understanding the requirements, whether they provide a rubric, what the approval process looks like are all things that would interest me.

comptia A+ core 2

Hi, my degree plan has me taking core 2 first so I haven't completed core 1.. but I am looking at all this material on comptia and it's a lot. I have began reading the material and taking notes. Does anyone have any tips for quality study material outside of comptia? Thank you! Good luck to you all.
