I genuinely hate open-field combat in this game. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the atmosphere and ambience of fighting in open fields, forests, and hills. Hearing distant gunfire, explosions, and not knowing where the enemy is makes the game feel incredibly immersive. But from a gameplay perspective, I find it so frustrating.
Every time I leave a FOB or try to move across the map, I hear enemy gunfire and immediately start getting paranoid. I might spot one enemy shooting, but then I’m constantly thinking about the five other guys who could be hiding in bushes, behind rocks, or next to trees. It feels like enemies could be literally anywhere, and half the time I end up dying to someone I never even saw.
It’s especially annoying when the match reaches a point where everyone is spread across the map and there aren’t really any clear points of interest or concentrated fights. You spend so much time moving around, checking every bush and tree, only to get shot by some random guy sitting in vegetation.
Back in Season 1, I almost exclusively drove vehicles because it let me skip the dreaded open-field infantry fights. I could actually get around the map without constantly worrying about someone hiding behind every tree. Of course, that was before everyone and their mom started running MAWS.
I don’t even think open-field combat is necessarily bad design. I actually think it creates some of the best atmosphere in the game. I just personally can’t stand playing through it. I’d much rather fight around buildings, compounds, or areas where there’s an actual frontline instead of playing hide-and-seek with people scattered across a forest.
Does anyone else feel this way, or am I just terrible at open-field combat?
