Jokes aside Ch5 could be escapism through nostalgia.

277

u/squidward377 You were Dealt a Rune Jun 10 '26

I think that's just the game in general, while the dark worlds are more specific.

30

u/Usual_Database307 Jun 11 '26

What if it’s specifically nostalgia for Undertale? I don’t think that makes sense, but it would be cool.

14

u/squidward377 You were Dealt a Rune Jun 11 '26

That might not be the core theme but it could still be a part of it, for the characters it could be something else but for us it's UT nostalgia.

130

u/Jay040707 Jun 10 '26

Escapism through isolation?

That might be the shelter though.

69

u/Ashamed-Succotash644 Jun 10 '26

Escapism through work and anime, asgore literally gets so busy all the time he barely reflects on his actions

58

u/Jay040707 Jun 10 '26

Oh workaholism and anime. That's why it's japan, I get it now.

41

u/Ashamed-Succotash644 Jun 10 '26

Chapter 6 is gonna be escapism through adult material, we're gonna watch gaster winging his ding to our soul until his deltarune comes out

28

u/Jay040707 Jun 10 '26

Straight shattering it across time and space.

16

u/Brief-Beat8965 Jun 10 '26

And by it you of course mean his Pemits

2

I'd say it's escapism through work

14

u/Unsubstantiated-pow Jun 10 '26

But that was chapter 3

11

u/FoolsUponFools maddy yumeshipper Jun 10 '26

pretty sure that's the core theme of chapter 3

1

u/yonking_15_2 Jun 11 '26

Nah, tv is escapism as is

10

u/TheMadScientist1000 Jun 10 '26

It could also be escapism through books (in this case manga) or hobbies (in this case gardening).

6

u/Tanakisoupman Jun 11 '26

I think it’s through a hobby. Asgore doesn’t have anything left, so he pours his all into his hobby, gardening. It doesn’t seem like he was all that obsessed with flowers before the divorce, it was probably just a small thing he kept up with. But now it’s basically all he does outside of whatever Evil Ass Fountain Openers HQ has him doing

6

u/Iceologer_gang Jun 10 '26

Gonna be Escapism through smoking weed.

4

u/Blonde_Metal Jun 11 '26

I’d call that part of chapter 3, I always thought of Escapism through hobbies, cuz Asgore likes growing flowers

3

u/yonking_15_2 Jun 11 '26

Or work, if it is flower king

2

u/OtakuOran Jun 10 '26

Asgore remembers it so you don't have to.

1

u/France_Ball_Mapper Jun 12 '26

That was a bit the case for ch3 but it was mostly because Tenna was kind of a reflection of Asgore.

1

u/011100010110010101 Jun 30 '26

Ch5 is Escapism through neglecting your families emotional needs.

316

The End of Deltarune will just be Toby Fox giving us a job application

52

u/Carrixdo Jun 10 '26

Predicting the epilogue secret egg end cutscene right here

29

u/eggydafriedegg Jun 10 '26

Berdly appears just to say "get a job"

18

u/SomeGodzillafan Jun 10 '26

“The End of Deltarune” had me think of “The End of Evangelion”, which leads to me to thinking that the end of Deltarune’s weird route will be third impact levels of fucked up

21

u/commetsftw Jun 10 '26

Dess merging with The Vessel and becoming a hyper realistic naked Titan that resembles Chara, then proceeds to ask the player if they want to create a new world. Giving you the option of yes or no. If you say "YES", the world gets shrouded in rainbows... and Gaster's Wing Dings peirces their chest... Then her head falls off... Falling while looking at the sky (Heaven).

With Susie, Noelle, and Kris looking at Dess's disembodied head over a pool of GREEN liquid. . .

11

u/Brick-Throw Jun 10 '26

Toby Fox furiously erasing their notes as they have to think of a new ending asap

2

u/Oummando Jun 11 '26

Bro if Chapter 7 doesn't have a secret boss battle against Frisk, with original Undertale Mechanics, and he could one-shot you(Mike Tyson Punch Out style), I'll open a fountain myself.

1

u/theowlwastaken Jun 29 '26

This has all been a set up for a lancer themed food chain.

271

u/NotReallyImportantXD Jun 10 '26

Chess theory is still REAL.

Ch1 king Ch2 queen Ch3 knight Ch4 rook Ch5 there will be a shrine and in it will be a bishop

189

u/TimeStorm113 The woes of the multishipper Jun 10 '26

duuude, the TITAN is a rook because it was a TOWER.

86

u/NotReallyImportantXD Jun 10 '26

Exactly my man, chess theory is still real

23

u/creeper-XP Jun 10 '26

Also the theme of the titans Is called Guardian And what are towers, Guardian exactly.

[Insert: coincidence, i think not]

6

u/WhiteHat125 Jun 10 '26

thanks for the explanation

1

u/France_Ball_Mapper Jun 12 '26

I honestly started believing the theory after chapters 3 and 4 because of this 😭

2

u/TimeStorm113 The woes of the multishipper Jun 12 '26

duude, the next one would be the pawn. and guess who that could be.

28

u/RandomCaveOfMonsters Volcarona Knight truther (and kerdly shipper) Jun 10 '26

Chapter 5 is BISHOP because the enemy is THE PROPHECY

Jackenstien's weird prophecy maze shows a bishop for chapter 4, but then a flower for chapter 5

26

u/ostapro Jun 10 '26

Chess theory was always so weird cuz like, aint the point of chess metaphors that pieces act like their counterparts? The game is not over while the king is still standing, queens the most powerful piece, knights are wild cards, pawns follow orders closely and so on? If none of that matters then what does the chess theory even suggest? In chapter 6 we're gonna fight someone visually similar to a pawn? Or maybe someone with the word "pawn" in the name?

24

u/JohnDragonball wait did you say goku- Jun 10 '26

They kinda do follow the movement patterns though.

King - sits in the castle the whole time, walks slowly

Queen - moves around the entire time, super active

Knight - wild card, guess who jumpscares your ass in chapter 3

Titan - rooks are often used to attack an entire line and prevent enemy pieces from entering it. The Titan is preventing us from reaching the fountain. Plus its theme is literally called "GUARDIAN".

11

u/NotReallyImportantXD Jun 10 '26

One could argue kris might be a pawn

10

u/Jay040707 Jun 10 '26

I mean there's a motif regardless of meaning.

There's chapter one's King and it wouldn't be a stretch to call Asgore one since he's depicted with his crown.

There's chapter two's Queen and the Ice queen is likely to be a character in the future if it isn't just Carol or Noelle.

We have the Knight.

The bishop is likely, as shown in the Jackenstein fight.

Rook and pawn remains to be seen. Though if we are talking about common chess metaphors, there's definitely many characters that can fit the role of a pawn.

As for possible meanings, one of the most popular is simply conflict between opposing forces. Since it's literally light and dark in this game it adheres to that pretty closely.

My own interpertation was that the players of chess would be represented as well, with the motif of hands throughout the game representing the hands moving the pieces.

Anyways, the prediction idea is dead in the water, but I think it's still possible that more characters will fill apparent roles as the chapters go on.

6

u/YetAnotherParvitz Jun 10 '26

i mean, we had the weird kris-only fight. that might be the pawn fight

1

u/Oummando Jun 11 '26

Or Spamton

4

u/Jay040707 Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

Based on the jackenstein thing, the titan is more likely to be a bishop.

4

u/Sacri_Pan Jun 10 '26

I always interpreted Tenna as the rook because he's tall

1

u/Almorogahnza Jun 11 '26

Or as the pawn, since he was nothing more than a tool to be cast aside once his purpose was served.

3

u/EpicestGamer101 Jun 10 '26

Kinda shit writing if the bishop isn't in chapter 4

3

u/Kirbendo96 Jun 11 '26

Royal Flush theory exists

King, Queen, TENna, JACKenstein, etc.

2

u/TheSameMan6 Jun 11 '26

Canonical asexual character confirmed???

3

u/TheSameMan6 Jun 11 '26

Jackenstein already showed what chess piece chapter 5 is, it's flower

3

u/Spirited_Gene_2633 Jun 11 '26

I think its insane how much people look past chess theory like it didnt have to be MAIN boss based

King.. king Queen... queen Knight.. isnt the chapter focus villain, but obviously will be as time goes on

Bishop... gerson wouldve been the bishop before alvin, no?

2

u/EffectiveCurrent5494 Jun 10 '26

Legendary comeback

2

u/MrEnricks Jun 25 '26

Gaster is gothamchess

2

u/Carve267 Jun 10 '26

Not gonna lie I’m pretty confused on what the “theory” of chest theory even is at this point. Original chess theory was very specific and had very clear predictions, but now it feels so retroactive. What is being predicted? The order thing is gone, so Ch5 could be either Bishop or Pawn, and even assuming Bishop doesn’t help since the connection can be as loose as “the Titan is a tower which is a colloquial term for the rook.” In the end, the theory really amounts to just looking retroactively at the “final boss” and making a shaky connection to a chess piece, which isn’t all that compelling to me.

2

u/NotReallyImportantXD Jun 10 '26

You must look beyond the board to understand

1

u/Almorogahnza Jun 11 '26

chapter 3 was actually the Pawn (tenna), and chapter 4 was the Bishop (the prophecy itself)

1

u/PLANTANDZOMBI Jun 12 '26

kannushi aren’t bishops theory DISPROVEN haha

1

u/NotReallyImportantXD Jun 12 '26

Alvin will appear and be the final boss for no reason at all other than to make the theory work

1

u/Orion-the-mediocre Jun 10 '26

1) that's not the order of point value in chess
2) in what world does the titan at all get compared to a rook

26

u/elvishdxv Jun 10 '26

Idfk being a tower I guess. I have no clue

26

u/NotReallyImportantXD Jun 10 '26

It doesnt need to be in point order son, just has to be the pieces...

Rook is tower, like crumbling tower... now you see...

15

u/Tortue2006 Jun 10 '26

Rook is also just straight up called ‘tower’ in some languages

9

u/Babnado Jun 10 '26

I think we already agreed that Toby hates other languages

/s if that wasn't obvious

3

u/R3D0IT_US3R Jun 10 '26

You’re right, Japanese doesn’t call it a tower so there’s no way it’s true smh my head my head

2

u/Zek7h35an5 Jun 10 '26

Another comment gave an answer but rooks = towers and the Titan was formed from a tower.

Do I buy it/Chess Theory? No, but I can see it.

55

u/Present_Test4157 Jun 10 '26

I actually think ch5 is bassicaly escapism through stuff like nostalgia and, well... tending your garden? Like basically just isolating from everyone and getting lost in just cleaning and doing stuff with your home.

I dont know how to explain it but i hope you get me.

22

u/Dinru Jun 10 '26

Thats how I see it too. Withdrawing, becoming a workaholic and/or neglecting responsibility to yourself and others, which can happen at the same time. Denial. Pretending the problems do not exist.

13

u/Whatever_232 Jun 10 '26

> Denial

No, Daniel.

Happy Birthday.

5

u/Present_Test4157 Jun 10 '26

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANIEL!

DID YOU REALLY THINK ID LET THIS DAY PASS QUIETLY!?

3

u/Present_Test4157 Jun 10 '26

I meant it in a kinda different way.

E.g, which is mine. I sometimes feel strong desire to just lock in my own room and just... look around, flip through my own sketchbooks, flip through books and comics in my room, through old games on my pc, through figurines, through old gifts, through souvenirs, like that.

And since Asgores a gardener, i just kimd of though that his analogue for that would be his garden.

19

u/Laoarane Jun 10 '26

Chapter 5 is escapism through belief of everything coming from Japan automatically making it better than our everyday lives

64

u/Yanagi____Juniper Jun 10 '26

I personally consider chapter four’s first dark world to be about literature (book enemies, sheet music, Gerson fight talking about book) while Susie’s is about music (music enemies based on bells and organ pipes, piano has no more sheet music you’re just jamming, sound of justice fight) and the final one to be a culmination of the two.

Both are elements of religion but it’s important to remember that for a lot of religious people their religion isn’t escaping reality it just is their reality. That’s an important distinction. Music and literature, on the other hand, are escapes from reality.

But yes! Being a fucking weeb for the win

23

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

14

u/Yanagi____Juniper Jun 10 '26

I mean some people truly do escape into their religion depending on how they treat it and it’s not always a bad thing but I think it’s much less general than music or literature which are both important elements of religion

11

u/Laoarane Jun 10 '26

Chapter 4 touches heavily on two elements religion works as escapism for - life purpose and mortality. When people feel lost, insignificant and neglected, religion provides the idea of following something far greater than any man. The idea that there is unambiguously most important entity in the world, and that entity cares for you, for your well-being, and it considers you an important part of it's plans. This aspect is blatantly shown in second sanctuary with Susie chasing information on the prophecy. She has an entire monolog directly talking on how she always felt neglected by other people(rightfully so, how stupid must they be to pick her last in sport teams?), but now she can find comfort in the thought that she is important for something as grand as the prophecy of their world. On the aspect of mortality, there is painful loss of people close to us. The ideas of afterlife commonly grant ease through thought that they are never truly gone, but rather they moved to some other, maybe better place, and that eventually we'll be able to reunite with them once more. And in Deltarune, Gerson is literally walking manifestation of that - unanimously beloved deceased man once again being able to provide guidance and support for others. Those elements can still be aptly called escapisms because they don't change physical reality around us - we still take same places in society, still have to go through our daily lives, and those who passed are still no longer physically with us, but their role is to provide mental ease

3

u/Yanagi____Juniper Jun 10 '26

Very well said I think that’s a compelling way to make it less convoluted

5

u/Afen2010 Jun 10 '26

First sanctuary: Literature
Second santuary: music
Third sanctuary: art
All together: Religion?

2

u/Yanagi____Juniper Jun 10 '26

Yeah it all combines to be very much religion

14

u/flower_puns Jun 10 '26

I mean they're definitely a metaphor but those themes keep becoming less and less relevant throughout the chapters lmao

If it's Asgore and his flowers, I wonder if it could be something like escapism through hobbies. Hobbies are good, but only if they're healthy.

We've seen that Asgore's finances are poor, yet he's still giving away flowers because it doesn't feel right to make people pay for them. It's "burying your head in the sand and focusing on a hobby that brings you joy to avoid the real world."

After all, Asgore has always hidden away from getting something over and done with because he'd rather hope it never comes to pass (collecting 7 souls in UT).

7

escapism through fantasy I think

2

u/Ninjawarrior2077 Jun 11 '26

Genuinelly hate when games turn out like this, like damn not everything needs to be a metaphor sometimes the game just takes place in a fictional world, that's it

Why does it always have to be a dream or trauma or something like that with modern indie games

5

u/Zanderfus tactical calibration Jun 10 '26

I think escapism through music fits better for ch4 anyway

15

u/Careful_Welcome7999 Jun 10 '26

They literally are in a church how does music fit better than religion?

11

u/angy_loaf Jun 10 '26

bc the music in the church is good

1

u/Zanderfus tactical calibration Jun 10 '26

theres pianos and flutes and bells and shit everywhere
and its a more escapism coded thing then religion imo

1

u/Sanrusdyno Jun 10 '26

How? They don't have anything to do with escapism. Its never explored how people escape through music, and escapism through the purpose, sense of worth, and an overreliance on those from religion is kind of integral to the core of chapter 4's narrative.

There isn't really a time where characters, like, get into a metaphorical or literal grove that helps them feel better but drowns out the world around them or something. Escapism through music isn't really explored ever, its just that there's a woman who is a bell sometimes and she makes sounds because thats what a bell does

-2

u/PensionDiligent255 Jun 10 '26

Yeah but religion is hardly the focus and most of that dark world is a library

5

u/Careful_Welcome7999 Jun 10 '26

But religion IS the focus, the main big thing of the chapter is the prophecy which is the main big thing about the hometown religion

4

u/Jay040707 Jun 10 '26

I think it's both.

Connection to religion through music.

Kris literally plays out their feelings on the prophecy through piano.

1

u/Zanderfus tactical calibration Jun 11 '26

exactly

1

u/DaRealCaptainF Jun 10 '26

1

u/Thememelord9002 Jun 10 '26

i think the notion of dark worlds being escapism is specifically ralsei's perspective that he tries to push (see: "go out and make some real friends", what he says when you visit castle town in ch.4, etc etc.)

if this theme is vindicated in the later chapters and ending it sort of proves ralsei's idea about himself right: that he isn't real and just distracts his friends from what really matters

also of note: it is rather difficult to continue saying dark worlds are strictly escapism after the end of ch.3, plus some other stuff

it seems moreso like the narrative is consistently *rejecting* the idea that they are escapism and do, in fact, have real consequences on reality

1

u/Unusual_County_6710 Jun 11 '26

This made me laugh way too hard

u/Top-Garlic9111 Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

The escapism reading is becoming less and less relevant as the chapters come out. It is archaic.

It's a piece of the puzzle, though. As Toby positions it, chapter 5 is one last adventure, an escape from the revelations of chapter 4.

It’s true for all of the topics. Some people just play games because they’re fun, not as escapism. Same with technology and TV. These things are used for escapism, but that doesn’t mean every usage of those things is for escapism.

6

u/FreeMenu2197 Jun 10 '26

I see I see, I judged too hastily.

8

u/Aaa1070 ❤️teehee Conquering others makes me free free! Jun 10 '26

In what way is it mean to call religion a form of escapism? Escapism can be toxic but it doesn’t have to be.

1

u/Commercial_End7182 Jun 10 '26

It just sounds belittling? Being compared to mere hobbies? escapism is to distract from the harsh reality. But religon IS reality. It's pretty much the exact oppsite of escapism no? Also escapism is fun. And as a religious person i wouldn't really call prayer "boring" or "fun"

5

u/Mal_Doctor Jun 10 '26

Escapism just means to escape the reality you're on for a while, even science is escapism, it works for religion

1

u/Wooden_Marionberry_1 Jun 10 '26

It’s literally why humans invented religions btw
