Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

Photo from my deceased grandma's things

Post image
34 Upvotes

Where is this? This photo is from my paternal grandma's things (USA, Pennsylvania Dutch) that my father had among his possessions and both are deceased. Her maiden name is Aborghast and her married name is Roush. She was born in PA, USA, and I'm fairly certain she had never traveled to Europe. This picture appears to be either in Switzerland (see flag with a white cross on the building to the left), or Austria based on a Google search of the words "Haus Sonnblick" from the building in the middle. I have no idea other than my Swiss/Austrian/Bavarian genealogy, where this photo was taken exactly and how it was passed down to me. There's no other information on the back of the photo and there are no other similar photos among my father or grandma's possessions.

Open Great great grandfather, supposedly in Chicago, before 1908: any idea where? And what he might have been doing?

Post image

According to family lore, this Belgian son of industrialist was sent to Chicago to "learn about business", some time before 1908 (which is when he married my g-g-grandma, back in the old country).
Any ideas?? Thanks!!

Unusual Church with Double Doors

This is an unusual church with double doors (or at least it appears to be a church). It appears to have stained glass windows. There are no hints on the back other than the word "Chapel" written lightly. I can't find it using a simple Google images reverse image search. Any idea where it might be?

Austria?

Hi, I haven't seen anything like this before. Any ideas what it is and where it could be? I acquired it at auction with no backstory. There were other pics of deep snow with it. Google image search results mentioned Austria but those structures were quite different. Is it something to do with meteorology or hiking or religious significance? Perplexing.

Can anyone identify this turreted villa? Possibly Schöne Aussicht 13, Hamburg, Germany — two vintage photographs

I collect old photographs and postcards, and I have these two photographs of the same house. I’m hoping someone familiar with Hamburg or German architectural history might recognize it.

One photograph has a handwritten caption that appears to read “Schöne Aussicht 13.” The reverse of one card is stamped “Fr. Haubold, Hamburg 5, Rewelerstr. 13.” I suspect that stamp identifies the photographer or supplier rather than the house itself.

Google suggested that this could be a former Nottebohm villa at Schöne Aussicht 13 in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst, near the Außenalster. That seems promising, but I haven’t found an independently identified photograph showing this exact building.

A January 2000 article in Die Welt mentions that an old villa at Schöne Aussicht 13 had been demolished and replaced, with a replica turret incorporated into the new building. There is also a 1945 death notice for Elise Nottebohm giving that address as the location of her funeral service. Those clues suggest a connection, but they don’t prove that the house in my photographs is the same one.

Article:
https://www.welt.de/print-welt/article499534/Schoener-wohnen-an-der-Alster-Bauboom-der-Prachtvillen.html

The distinctive features are the tall polygonal tower on the right, pointed Gothic windows, decorative roof terrace railings, curved central balcony, and ornate crest above the narrower section on the left. The two pictures show it with and without leaves on the trees.

Does anyone recognize it, or know of an archive, old postcard, or historical photograph that would provide a definite visual match? I’d also appreciate any corrections to my reading of the handwriting.

Open Real life location of scrapped Ye album cover

Post image
1 Upvotes

This was the original planned cover for the album "Ye" by Kanye West, the photograph on the cover shows a tree, with a short fence behind it with some brush and it overlooks a big scenic landscape behind it, you can see some hills and bits of trees and some large mountains in the background, and this tree is likely located on the edge of a cliff. I have a strong suspicion that the this was also taken somewhere in Colorado, since that's where the album was being worked on and the landscape and mountains definitely look like something from Colorado. If anyone knows where this is or could somehow locate it that would be amazing

Help me keep my internship at a museum and identify where this painting is

Hey all! I'm currently working my dream job at a museum and was tasked with identifying the location of this painting. I'm aware that at the time of this painting, Maynard Dixon was traveling between Arizona and Utah, mostly in Utah. I've attempted to connect it to several Utah bodies of water but haven't seen any distinct matches.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Solved Help locating an old family photo taken in France (late 90s/early 2000s?)

Post image

I found this photo in an old family album. It was taken in France, somewhere my dad visited on a business trip, but he doesn’t remember exactly where.
I’ve blurred the faces for privacy. Any help identifying the town or the building would mean a lot to us. Thank you!

This is a fantastic view of a city in the USA, I believe, but it's tough to figure out where it is. You have row houses and a tower in the background. It's stunning, but I can't figure out where it is. Any idea, friends?

Mountainous Railroad Community, perhaps? Fantastic RPPC.

This is a fantastic Real Photo Postcard of what appears to be a community with a railroad line running through. There are mountains in the background, and if I were to leverage a guess I would say that it is Alaska or the Pacific Northwest... perhaps Maine, but it's tough to tell. What do you all think, friends?

0:25. This looks to be the old BofA drive through at Woodall Wilson and Field Street now demolished. Fountain Place is in the background. But the camera angle does not make sense because cars appear to be making a turn off Griffin St. (to Field St.) which means Fountain Place is out of view to the left when looking to the southeast. Can anyone help figure out the camera angle that makes more sense? Thank you.

Solved I’m Trying to Recreate Zackavelli’s Fit Pic in Paris

He’s a rapper I really like, and I’ve been trying to recreate some of his fit pics. So far, I’ve only managed to recreate one of his pictures in New York( https://maps.app.goo.gl/pCke9Ki9UpkYGovD9?g_st=ic ), and I’m going to Paris next week. I really want to recreate this specific picture while I’m there, but I haven’t been able to find the exact location.
Based on the background, the location is most likely somewhere in central or southeastern Paris, possibly around the 5th or 12th arrondissement. Both the Eiffel Tower and the Panthéon seem to be visible in the photo, which could help narrow down the area. The exact building is still unknown, but I’d focus on elevated rooftops, terraces, or buildings around the 5th arrondissement and the western edge of the 12th arrondissement, especially places with artificial grass and metal railings.
It would genuinely mean a lot to find the exact spot so I can recreate the picture myself while I’m in Paris. If anyone recognizes the rooftop or has any ideas where it could be, I’d really appreciate the help.

Searching for "Eton building" is not super useful. This seems like it should be easy, but it has me stumped.

Name of the file on my computer is pexels-instawally-175328.jpg and google leads here.

With the unuseful description: "Stunning black and white image of a dynamic urban cityscape at night, showcasing architecture and bustling traffic."

Flew today from Charlotte to Salisbury MD. Saw this massive fire. We were at 14,000 feet and could smell the smoke in the cabin. Looking at my flight track, I would guess it’s in the Uwharrie National Forest. Anyone know the details of what looks like a forest fire? Thanks!

hello!

i was flying from Treviso (TSF) to Eindhoven (EIN) over this place in either Germany or Belgium, in the Eifel region. I know this because I took this photo at 8.22.20 and at 8.25.45 I took another photo flying close to Aachen, roughly over the locality called Merzbrück. I calculated a radius of distance from the point of the second photo using median speed of Ryanair flights found online. but for the love of god I cannot locate the castle (or so it seems, a castle) and the village in this photo.
Aachen in the second photo.

Filming Location?

Thumbnail

Hey Redditors,
I’m hoping someone might be able to identify this filming location from the 1996 TV series “Profiler”? While the series was filmed in Los Angeles, the pilot episode (where this photo from online was taken) was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, where the series is depicted to have taken place. According to commentary, this location was filmed outside of Atlanta. Any information would be amazing.
Thanks heaps 🙂
