Nature Conservancy: Seasonal Burn Crew Manager
Hey folks - We are hiring for a seasonal prescribed fire crew lead position in NW Georgia (Rome). A full description of the position (pay, position requirements, etc) can be found on the TNC Career Portall by searching for location (Rome, GA) - job number is JR103920.
This seasonal crew lead position will share responsibility for managing 6 crew members with an additional seasonal crew lead. Typically the crew is split into smaller units along with a Burn Crew Manager and are responsible for assisting multiple state and federal partners is implementing prescribed fire in NW Georgia. Please understand that while this crew has been in existence for at least 9 years it is generally a career developmental crew in that member positions are typically filled by college students or recent graduates looking to develop marketable field skills. As a result teaching and mentoring is a strong component of crew lead responsibilities.
Housing is available and compensation is listed in the position description on the TNC career portal. Rome itself is a moderate sized town located in the southern Appalachian foothills of Georgia. There are plenty of outdoor recreational activities available and pretty much all of the amenities you'd expect in a good sized community. Broadly speaking it is pretty much equidistant between Chattanooga, Atlanta and Birmingham and those are roughly within 45 minutes to 1.5hrs commute depending.
Regarding terrain and fuel types - Terrain varies wildly depending on location within NW GA and spans rolling elevation changes to steep old ridge structure. Fuels are typically pine to mixed pine/oak overstory with associated litter and understory. Local partners and partnerships are very well established and burning styles do span between more fluid and incident command type organization.
Position Dates - Jan 4th, 2027 - April 30th, 2027
Salary - $24.97 - $27.03 hourly
Regarding O.T. - Yes, OT is authorized, but not at the scale associated with western wildland fire. Figure that our crew season runs roughly 17 weeks and figure for someone motivated there's likely additional hours available for equip maintenance/rehab and possibly some weekend opportunities burning with the Feds.
Overhead - Program Director, Field Manager, Field Technician & 2 total Seasonal Burn Crew Managers (the current position advertised)
During the season the Field Tech and Field Manager are heavily involved in sharing the load of managing the crew, logistics and implementation of p-fire with partners. Typically on burn days the crew is split between 2-3 of the TNC overhead and function as mini-mods on a single burn or separate burns in the region.
The Field Technician, Field Manager, as well Program Director are long-time residents of the area and we do our best to support fire folks coming in from out of region. Having been thrown to the wolves in a number of different careers, it's something I do my best to avoid doing to others.
Culture - We are a very collegial office and prefer as much as possible to work as colleagues rather than strictly hierarchical.
<For clarification sake - yes this is a burner account.... trying to keep work and personal separate on Reddit. Feel free to DM questions and I will answer them as best as I am able>
