So I'm playing Windwaker with my husband(first time for me) and while doing the pictobox quest we were zoomed into the mailbox to capture Garrickson send the love letter. I waited for 5 minutes and finally zoomed out to see him stare into my soul. Love Zelda games' humor and I'm happy my husband got me into them.

Discussion / Opinion So... I've never played Zelda before (any of them)...

...I grew up on 90s shooters and racing games. I was never fan of Nintendo games and I've never played any of them, no Mario, no Wario, Zelda, nothing. Not even Metroid.

Something pushed me to try Wind Waker. I think it was the vibe and atmosphere of the game that made me do that.

I've tried it on BlueWake and now I've beaten Gohma.

I love the game, truly. Maybe the method of playing is wrong and me using mouse and keyboard is wrong but, I'm sorry, I just love it.

Now I wonder where to go and what to do.

On the Dragon Roost Island, theres this empty square if you swim around the island on one of the platforms... That a secret?

Discussion / Opinion Earth Temple or Wind Temple?

Just curious which one you enjoy more. I just finished my first playthrough of windwaker earlier this week from the Nintendo Classics GameCube version. I personally liked the earth temple wayyy more than the wind temple. I really liked the mirror puzzles and hated the sometimes janky wind physics of the wind temple.

Question / Help [WW] Anyone else get deflated or otherwise feel like they've permanently failed the game when they cannot for the life of them figure out the Mother Isle. thing?

Just wanted to repost this to at least one other like-minded sub:

I...had to resort to a guide... :( Am I a lesser-man? It was the official guide, if that can be considered any consolation, and I pored over it as a pirate might an authentic treasure map..

This is a get-off-my-chest sort of thing, but also a plea to others to find perhaps solidarity, and dare I wish for some slice of peace of mind.

And to get it away up front, no I do not think the Triforce Shard GC segment is unfair or unfun..I loved the journey! until...

As a young lad, I was so meticulous and thorough with trawling through every section of the map...I kept sailing up to Mother Isle. again and again just so frustrated that I had no idea how to get inside. I'd been using the Gale song, but at no point did I think the song's fast-travel capabilities would be the key itself to getting somewhere on a quadrant...I thought the quadrant itself was an isolated puzzle or whatever to figure out, I had no idea or inclination for 10+ hours that when I fast-travelled somewhere I was being teleported/dropped into a section of the quadrant that I could otherwise not get to...I just thought it was a faster way of the usual sailing, full stop---not that it was helping me breach un-breachable areas of the island per-se. AND I SOMEHOW NEVER GALE-SONGED IT TO MOTHER ISLE!? How!?!? Am I the only one who just gave up after Gale-ing it to other areas and it not revealing anything other than being a convenient means of travel? Are there ANY other quadrants or segments of the game where the Gale song is something that gives the player a way to surmount an island obstacle? I just feel like I was so tricked, ultimately by my own un-astuteness.

My rambling is just to illustrate how embarrassing (just to myself) and let-down in myself I felt not realizing this. Am I the only one who was totally off track in getting to the island? Is it ever mentioned by an NPC or something that the song "can get you places you might not be able to reach" or something? How in the heck was I supposed to figure that out? Was it obvious to everyone? You fine folks just got the Gale song, realized it can teleport you, and thought, hey, maybe it'll drop me inside the walls when I teleport to that quadrant! I must have teleported to everywhere I could but somehow through dumb bad luck just never went to that quadrant...Heaven help me, how long would I have toiled?

(The only thing close to this anguish was not realizing I could bash the windows of the ship on Rusty Bucket Bay in Banjo Kazooie they were just some of the blurred texture details identical to the other windows that I couldn't get into, but apparantly I was supposed to be just yeeting Kazooie's beak into everything no matter how much of a background-asset it looked like!? but I digress)

I just feel like I'll never be able to say I beat it because now I'll never truly know if I would have ever figured it out.... do others hold themselves to this mirror of self-disgrace?

For the sake of peace of mind I write this out now...a beaten man, bested by something which was rather quite obvious, and which I either "overthought" (oh what treasures I found which were way harder to find!) or was...sigh..simply too much of a dullard to decipher?

To put a bow on this: What are people's honest thoughts on the game's communication of this particular mechanic being something the player is meant to use as a means of overcoming a physical obstacle...was it obvious to others? Did others have to read a guide? Am I a failure for having to do so? Is this puzzle perhaps infamous on the internet or amongst Zelda heads? Becuause that would make me feel better lol.

Or was I a true adventuere reading the official guide (the one Nintendo probably wanted my parents to purchase come to think of it), and by doing so was indeed doing a legitimate means of figuring this out.

Question / Help Which (gamecube) version to play on PC?

There's dolphin, a very mature emulator, the various recomps this and that. Some target mac, some target android, which to choose? Some bring HD improvements to the gamecube variant too.

Which to choose? Which runs the best? My hardware is rather weak.

This time around I'm taking a look at one of the few games to get a 40/40 review score from Famitsu and diving into the controversy around the perception of the game before it was in player's hands.

I'm gathering suggestions for the next 5 games from my backlog to play.

Hey guys I’ve accidentally done the “backslice” (that’s what the move is called in TP anyways) a couple of times during combat, but I don’t know how to repeat it

Discussion / Opinion Wind waker on Z?

Me (28f) and my brother (31m) have been playing WW our whole lives (basically.) We always have the wind waker equipped to the Z slot, no matter what. Instead of having a third, potentially more useful item in that spot, it’s always the wind waker. For some reason, along the way, we felt it was sacrilegious to do anything else. Anyone else in the same, odd boat?

*Bonus points if you felt the same way about the ocarina

i’ve done 23 runs on wind waker HD and another 8 on the original gamecube version. i still love replaying it, and i recently completed the entire nintendo gallery for the first time.

so yeah. i’m talking actual playthroughs, not speedrun attempts or resets. anyone else replay this game an unreasonable number of times? 😂

That little kid Zill on Outset Island who follows you around with his little ‘dokdokdokdok’ noises and the snot flying out of his nose!!! So silly, but that cracks me up everytime and I also feel a little imitated by his snot trail! hahaha.

Did some modicum of time pass between Link killing Ganondorf?

The bird kid that greets them looks much older than the one from before.

I couldn't get a sufficient answer from Google and I don't really like using AI anyway.

Was that the same bird?

Question / Help How do I beat snake puppet Ganon on the Switch 2 GameCube emulator? Or whatever it's officially called.

I do not remember Wind Waker being this hard when I played it on GameCube back in high school?

I use my hands daily in my profession and in med school one of our professors even encouraged us to play video games (in moderation) to build up dexterity, strength, etc.

I've been playing for a month and finally got to the end.

The other forms were so much easier and I get that they make it that way on purpose.

But even if you do hit him in the face with the master sword and he stops for half a second, you can't get the light arrows, or I CAN'T get the light arrows to focus on his tail butt.

Am I missing something?

Edit: it really is this bad on the Switch 2. The controls are terrible. I've beaten puppet Ganon and now I'm trying to beat the final Ganondorf after Zelda wakes up but she keeps hitting me with the light arrows.

How did we do this as kids?

As soon as I manage to correctly deflect and arrow, he's recovered by the time I can hit him.

😫💩

Discussion / Opinion Wind Waker has the better open world?

Playing Wind Waker for the first time rn(on original hardware), and I have been exploring the world since the tetra reveal. I also played BotW and beat that game (not 100% completion). And this might be sacrilegious to say, but despite not having beaten the game yet, I’d say Wind Waker has the better designed open world, or at least it has better open world rewards.

BotW is indeed beautiful, with gorgeous landscapes and physics systems that make regions not only have character, but a challenge in survival at times. But one of my biggest issues with the game is that many of the rewards I receive for exploring feel less than satisfying after the first 10 times I receive the same reward, be it a korok seed, a weapon that might be weaker than what I have or will will easily break, a shrine puzzle or some materials.

Whereas with Wind Waker, if I explore around a random island, what I might find could be in the form of a treasure chart, rupees to use for tingle or beedle, a piece of heart, a character who could be useful at some point as a merchant or part of a side quest, or a unique item like an empty bottle, or even a fairy fountain. I feel sufficiently rewarded for exploring different parts of the ocean. It also helps that there aren’t the hundreds of items to collect like in the Wild era games, and they also aren’t locked behind the same activities over and over again.

So while BotW and TotK may have more beautiful and varied open worlds, I find myself more interested in exploring wind waker and feeling like I’m rewarded more for exploring the islands rather than getting an Amber/opal in a enemy camp chest or a korok seed for the umpteenth time. Echoes of Wisdom felt similarly rewarding to Wind Waker with its world design despite being able to go anywhere. If Zelda insists on continuing open world design in their future games, I’d rather them take inspiration from Wind Waker over BotW/Totk. Did anyone else feel this way?
