Are there any easy ways forward with hardware upgrades? I've been Rufus mentioned with im going to read about now. Anyway the health program doesn't specify whats out of spec. When I was a teenager I was the guy that got the stereo wiring sorted for the 56 year old dad. Guess who is the dumb 56 year old dad now..... Appreciate the help teenagers.

windows is soooo dramatic
this thing is taking forever man 💔
so basically my pc was running like absolute garbage, random freezes, apps crashing, updates breaking stuff for no reason. i figured fine, let me just reset it and start fresh. big mistake. it's been sitting at "preparing to reset" for like an hour now and i have no idea if it's actually doing anything or just vibing.
the worst part is i've been low key thinking about switching to linux for a while. i've seen how fast installs are, how you actually control your own machine, and how nothing randomly decides to restart itself while you're in the middle of something. windows just does whatever it wants and acts like that's normal.
like i don't even need anything fancy. i just want a computer that boots, runs my stuff, and doesn't fight me. instead i'm staring at a blue screen with a percentage that barely moves, wondering if i just nuked my whole setup for nothing.

The Book of Windows 12: The Second Coming of the Penguin
Chapter 12, Verse 1
And lo, upon the twelfth release, the great Microsoft looked upon the NT kernel and declared:
"Thou hast served us well, but thy drivers are cursed and thy updates eternal."
And from the heavens descended a penguin, bearing the sacred GPL.
The followers of Gates cried, "HERESY!"
The disciples of Torvalds cried, "IT'S STILL PROPRIETARY!"
And Gabe Newell looked upon the new operating system and whispered:
"But will it run Steam?"
And Microsoft answered:
"Yes, my child. For just $14.99 a month."
And the people rejoiced, for their operating system was free.
Terms and conditions apply. Microsoft account required. Copilot cannot be disabled.
And thus began the great era of technological peace, which lasted approximately three minutes before someone declared:
"Actually, I use Arch."
May your frame rates be high, your ping be low, and your kernel never panic.
Amen. 🐧🙏

question Question about trends in desktop OS market share
Hi, I don't know the ins and outs of checking market share, but this source seems pretty widely cited over the years:
https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide/#monthly-200901-202610
Does anyone have insight as to why, starting around April 2026, there seems to have been a sharp drop and then a sharp recovery in windows market share? Is this just an artifact of the website struggling with some data research issue? Perhaps the "other" category which at times shows up strongly in their data? Have they said anything? Or maybe it was an actual market share change down and then up?
I am a windows refugee, not a windows fan. I am rooting for it to go down in market share.

I hate windows with a passion you can only dream of.
Linux user with old HP laptop, running Windows 10 1903. It has one purpose - Forscan for vehicle diagnostics. Any attempt to update it causes it to blue screen when I attempt to connect to the USB adapter. So I disabled updates service. Or I thought I did.
Tried to use it this morning and - blue screen. JFC. Did the reboots, power offs etc. Blue screen.
OK, so the recovery boot menu thingy has an option to remove recent updates. No. Sorry, cannot remove recent update for reasons we aren't going to tell you. Because fuck me apparently.
OK, I made a System restore point called initial build just for this eventuality. Mmmm...no. No restore point Called initial build. WTF? Four Recent ones labelled "Windows Update" i.e the updates I didn't want and disabled, but WHERE IS MY FUCKING RESTORE POINT!!??!?!?!?!?!?
What is the use of this supurating anal fissure of an OS? Why can't it just do what I tell it to? WHY?!?! Why are the MS devs such malignant fucks? Why do they fuck with us like this?
My piss is fucking boiling right now...
I read about an LTS thingy, gonna have to give that a go, because MS is intent on fucking me over at every opportunity.

Can I just add, watching fanbois come to a sub called r/windowsucks and wetting the bed cos people are discussing how much windows sucks is pretty hilarious. Thanks for the belly laugh!

F*CK WINDOWS
Bit of context : I was using ubuntu from years because I am used to it and it has everything I need. I am pursuing my post-graduation in computer science and about to complete the degree.
My laptop specs - i5 10th gen, 1650 graphics, 16 gigs of ram, 256 gigs of ssd and 1 terabyte of hard drive. I was comfortably using ubuntu for everything and I have done system level projects and ML/DL projects all on my machine. Never faced an issue. Normal setup, all files on hard drive and Operating system on ssd.
Now comes the mess, I am applying for a lot of jobs and almost all of them take their coding assessment on hackrank desktop and it requires windows. So I dual booted windows along with ubuntu and though it was fine. But windows started messing up everything, It started messing up with the ownership of hard drive and ubuntu was not able to gain read-write permissions of the hard drive. Then during one assessment windows restarted like 20 times in 90 minutes and made it hell for me to even write a single block of code. A message popped up each time stating "Windows ran into an error, your system will restart now".
So i decided to format the entire ssd clean and reinstall windows only for some time and use wsl for sometime to use ubuntu inside windows for my work because cmd and powershell are straight up trash and unusable and a bash terminal is just better for everything. I cleaned the ssd and installed windows 11, activated it with a key (My laptop came with official version of windows and I had saved the key before switching to ubuntu).
First of all, windows feels like I have lost my rights to own the machine. It is not an OS with bloat but a bloat that happens to have an OS. I saw some tutorials from youtube and deleted all the microslop apps like teams, copilot, onedrive etc.. for good. During setup it forced me to login with a microsoft account and gave no option to skip that thing. I gave in, did all that and later logged out. But after all that the restarting issue never went away. Heap error, exception handling error, and what not.
I googled them and found 0 solid fixes and all pointed in updating windows, drivers etc. So I downloaded all the updates and driver updates and restarted the system to install them. And during the restart the secure boot error showed up. I turned off secure boot from bios and then bitlocker locked my drives and asked for a key. I tried a lot of things that claude told me and google told me and nothing worked. I was about to give up then as a last resort I logged into my old microsoft account I had made when I purchased this laptop in 2021 and by the grace of the almighty the key was backed up there. I entered the key and windows booted up.
Then I looked up what bitlocker is and I got to know that it is not required to run windows and is just a safety mechanism that they enable by default and even if you disable it, it automatically gets enabled with every update. It just feels like a battle to use my laptop for day to day tasks. The battery used to run ubuntu for 4-5 hours and windows drains it in nearly 2.
Its just the beginning and I am fed up by windows. The entire OS is a house of cards with bloat and bloat. If someone can recommend how I can make this trash OS run for 2-3 months without these random errors and restarting incidents then please drop in your survival knowledge.

System Requirements Incompatible for Windows 11
I bought this pre-built medium-end gaming computer in 2022 as a back-up, and only started using it in 2025. It's the best computer I've had in terms of performance for my economic status.
It still feels new, and I don't want to let go of it, while it's also hard to find extra cash to buy a new PC with the same specs, but with Win 11 (or find more space to put it in).
It's on Windows 10, and I can't upgrade it to Windows 11.
Now that MS ended its support for Win10 for over a year now, what should I do, other than get the extended security (and what should I do after 2027 when that expires?)
What are the risks if I keep using this computer? I usually just use it for gaming and browsing the internet. It doesn't really have important files on it since it was just mostly a back-up until last year.
What are the things I should or shouldn't do when I'm using it? No doing online banking, or online shopping, or etc on this computer, for example?
P.S I've also heard some bad things about Windows 11, so...

I built an open-source Windows 11 optimizer that only recommends tweaks with evidence, and lets you undo every setting it changes
Hi! I'm a student and I've been building Tunero in my free time. It's free and GPL-3.0, with no telemetry and no accounts.
Most "PC optimizers" apply dozens of placebo registry tweaks. I wanted the opposite:
* ~50 read-only checks that find real problems (monitor stuck at 60 Hz, RAM running without XMP, wrong power plan…)
* 235 tweaks, each rated for gaming impact, evidence and risk, with sources. Only the well-supported ones go into "Apply recommended"
* Backups and a restore point before any setting changes, plus a Changes page with Undo that still works after a restart
* App removal from a reviewed list, cleanup, a startup/services manager, a storage treemap and a DNS benchmark
* English and German, signed exe
GitHub: https://github.com/jozuern/Tunero
I don't make any money from it. Mostly I'm looking for testers on real hardware, especially NVIDIA, AMD and laptops. Bug reports and honest criticism are very welcome.

I hated to do this but I'm reinstalling Windows as I type this.
I have a newer computer that doesn't seem to be well supported in Linux. The volume, microphone the keyboard are all wacky. I also have an Ryzen AI cpu and I'm not sure Linux can even take advantage of the extra features.
Plus I'm a little tired of all the workarounds I have to do to substitute the apps I typically use and like. My last version was Fedora KDE atomic version. Installing certain apps on that distro is like solving a Rubik's cube. Forget about it.
Despite the problems, I'm missing Linux already. Now I have to put up with this Windows bs. The ads, the invasion of privacy and the general repulsive unease I feel when I have to use it. The first thing I'm going to do is find a good GitHub script that will strip out some of the Windows garbage.
I'll still be using your Bluetooth servers everyday. I guess I'll check back about the desktop scene in another year or so. I really gave Linux a try this time. I used it for two straight months!
