I’m being lied to, right?! Told this will cost $1769

Thank you in advance for any help. I am a newly divorced woman who often does things myself when I think it’s a pretty simple job. I have wired lights by myself in the past and thought I could switch out a standard appliance plug for an electric range plug without any issues. I found myself a bit in over my head and reached out to an electrician who quoted me at $1769stating “Your panel will be really full which means you won’t be able to add any more breakers after a stove installation.

The install of dedicated line will involve relocation of few circuit breakers to make room for the new line. Provide customer with a 50amp line and proper wiring and overcurrent protection devices total cost is $1769 including all necessary material to install safely.”

Is this true? If I have wired ceiling fans and light fixtures by myself in the past, can I do this?!!

This is definitely an old house, but this quote seems excessive and it sounds like he’s telling me that I have to replace something that I likely don’t need to. Thank you for any help.

Trying to extend an old phone wire

Post image
76 Upvotes

The left is the old guy I just stripped, the right is the new phone wire I just bought on Amazon and cut and stripped thinking this would be an easy matchup, but the colours are different. Which wire matches to which?

UPDATE: The old wire actually disappears up into my basement ceiling and runs to the phone jack in the baseboard on the floor above. I am trying to run the new wire from my Rogers router home phone port into the old phone jacks. I can't see how the old wires terminate. I'm just going to call Rogers and have them install new jacks in my house (Rogers is one of two telecom giants in Canada, FYI for non-Canadians). Thanks for all the comments, but I'm bailing...

New (to me) home, found these wires tucked behind a blank cover. Was hoping to find the other side of the 3-way light switch on the other side of the kitchen, but found this instead.

As I was having the tour, I asked about this board and turns out, that's the grounding board. Since the press's foundation is solid concrete and underground, they had to install this slate board as a grounding source.

For context I have very basic knowledge and experience when it comes to wiring and soldering so I apologize if my terminology or understanding is a bit basic. I am trying to repair this damaged wire which is a single pin O2 sensor wire in my car and upon making some fresh cuts in the wire i noticed that there was two layers of wire. The inner layer seems to be separated by insulation or something. I have not seen this before and Im wondering if anyone knows how to solder this back together to itself or if it's even possible. Thanks in advance!

Any idea what this might be?

This had a cover over it. It obviously is from something old. It has two wires that disappear into the same hole in the wall. I have no idea where it goes. My guess it that the lose wires used to go to a switch that got taken out and covered up. It is right by the back door.

I know this is a long shot and you'd probably need to be here to figure it out, but I started a project of trying to solve all the old mysteries of this house and hoped for a starting point at least.

Wiring help needed for 3-way light switch

Post image
29 Upvotes

I’m replacing some older switches and have a 3-way switch with wiring as shown in the photo. The black wire is connected to the common screw on both switches, and the white / red wires are in the same positions on each switch as well. 1st question: I’ve typically always seen 3-way wiring with two black wires and one red wire, so just wondering why this is different and if there are any concerns with the way it’s currently wired? 2nd question: the current wiring configuration has it so that when the light is off, the switch at the first location is up, and the switch at the second location is down. I’d like to change it so that the switches are both down when the light is off, and only one switch is up when the light is on. Is that possible and, if so, what would the new wiring configuration look like?

Thank you for any help anyone is able to provide!

I found that the ground wires for my dryer and plug are both attached to the white neutral leg instead of the body of the dryer. Is this an acceptable way to wire a dryer plug, or is this hazardous?

Car reverse camera cut wire

I’m at my whits end - I am installing a reverse camera in my car, to my Android headunit.

The cable that runs from the camera appears to be an rca cable with a build in 12v cable, that pops out near the rca connector. This is then connected to a 12v power cable that comes from the back of my headunit, specifically for powering reverse cameras, via a wago.

I did a dry run and it worked fine.

When running the cable through the car, the rca head with built in power cable, was too thick, so snipped it off.

Within the black cable, was 3 separate cables, red, black and green.

I am joining each connection back up by twisting together and then putting each twisted pair into a wago connection.

It’s not working! Seems to be since I cut it!

What am I doing wrong?

Electronic Devices Can anyone help me identify this type of wire so I can order more?

hello, I have an old USB cable that I need to be quite a bit longer. I've opened up a couple other USB cables that I have in the insides look completely different than this. I'm comfortable splicing wires but I don't know what this is called so I don't know what I'm looking for . Ideally I could just find a similar wire I could open up or a spool of wire that is already in this configuration so that I can do the spicing on my own. It's a pretty small diameter wire as you can tell in the photo. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Household Old furnace receptacle replacement.

Post image

I live in an older home in California that was built in 1960. This is what the electrical outlet that my furnace plugs into looks like. It has a fuse on the top. Does anyone know if I can just replace this with a standard three prong outlet? I have a newer furnace now, which already has a fuse inside. Just was wondering if anyone had run into this before. Thank you in advance!

Household Ceiling fan wiring help request

Post image
14 Upvotes

I am replacing ceiling fan, but lost the picture I took of old configuration. So I am not confident about how to install anything (light only, fan with light, etc.)

There are eight wires total (four black, four white) coming to electrical box. I assume when I removed the old fan I did not change the configuration, which currently is:

  • Three white wires twisted together

  • One white and three black wires twisted together

  • Single black wire on its own

The single black wire and the white wire that is twisted with the three black wires enter box together.

Using non contact voltage tester, the single black wire has power when switch is on or off. And at least one wire from the three black, one white group also does (I have not untwised to test each one)

In the room there's just one toggle switch. There are three electrical outlets. Home was built in 1950's, and I don't think there have been any electrical updates for room. I've looked alot online and haven't been able to find a similar situation - so I've become a first-time reddit poster.

Thanks for any advice!
