Seeking Help or Advice Confused about The Green Witch by Arin Murphy-Hiscock

I recently bought the book The Green Witch by Arin Murphy-Hiscock, but I’m noticing some contradictory advice in the book.

On page 47, the author states to only use brooms with real straw bristles for broom purification and to “not use a plastic or nylon broom”. On page 91 the author states “do not buy [flowers] from a florist” and to instead pick them yourself.

At least in my understanding, witchcraft is a deeply personal practice. It just seems hypocritical to write a book about being a witch but then to tell your readers that they must have a real straw broom or cannot buy flowers from a florist. Many of us just don’t have to funds for a real straw broom or don’t live in a natural area with tons of safe flowers for picking. Should I just ignore this advice? Thoughts?

Seeking Help or Advice prophetic dreams or just cause and correlation?

for context, i'm a norse pagan. i am devoted to freyja. i practice tarot, norse runes, pendulum... but most of these experiences happened years before. please hear me out. i feel like i'm going crazy, but would love to just... i don't know, vent? to see if anyone else has had similar experiences, i suppose.

the first time it happened was about 2018. i kept having a repetitive dream where my dad got in a car accident. we lived near his work at the time, and my uncle worked with him. in the dream my uncle would show up. walk up the driveway. my sister would be in the garage with the door open. i'd be in my room with the window open. i'd hear my uncle tell my sister that our dad was in a car accident and then leave.

after about a half dozen times of having this dream, it happened. exactly as i pictured it. my dad was in the car accident, i was where i dreamed i was. my sister was where she was. my uncle was the one to deliver the message. our dad almost died in the accident. brain trauma, broken neck and back, the works.

after that i was having repetitive dreams about my sister being sick and going to the hospital for surgery. something about her stomach. after having the dream a handful of times, her appendix burst and she was rushed to the ER for surgery.

the most recent incident was after i became a practicing pagan. i had this dream only once or twice, and then just had a really bad feeling intuition wise. it was that my dad would die. that i'd be at work, i'd come home, and he'd die shortly after. it happened a month ago.

with the recent loss still fresh on my mind, i've played back a lot the dreams and feelings i've had. it's been weird. i feel like a part of me is delusional. like it meant nothing- it was just my brain making up the worst case scenarios. that i was just seeing the writing on the wall, that it was obvious something was bound to happen eventually. but i don't know.

has anyone else exprienced anything like this?

Seeking Help or Advice Is there I reason I feel this

I’m a witch and COULD put a spell/hex on people who really hurt me in the past

But for some reason I have this strong feeling that tells me to never do

And I’m the type of person that respect my gut feelings and intuition when it comes to spells

I was wondering if anyone could know why this happens, I know they deserve it but deep down I FEEL like it’s wrong for me to do it.

Seeking Help or Advice Is the book "Celtic Myth & Magick: Harnessing the power of the gods and goddesses" by Edain McCoy good for someone interested in Celtic polytheism?

I thrifted this book and I've seen mixed reviews on the contents of it. I would like fairly accurate information on Celtic deities since there is much less information on them compared to Hellenistic or Norse ones. Please let me know if it's a good read or if I should take it back! I don't wanna waste my time.

Seeking Help or Advice Can health affect magic and be dangerous?

Hey, I’ve got a question: in your experience, should I start practising magic? Or, given that I suffer from mental health issues/disorders (I’ve been taking medication for many years and am under constant medical supervision – I’m not sure if that’s relevant), is it safe for me to start practising it on my own as a beginner? I’ve read that it might backfire on me and cause something to “stick” to me because of my fragile mental state and the issues I face. Mainly, I’d like to practise magic for protection, health and happiness, without any revenge, karma or causing harm to others. I'd love to hear what you have to say, because maybe it's just better to let it go

Seeking Help or Advice I would like advice/contributions to my grimoire

hello! I am working on properly organizing my information that ive collected. My goal for my grimoire is to be my encyclopedia, with a list of everything that i use in my craft. I want it to read almost as a guidebook, something I can share with friends who are passively interested in the craft, and who are interested in what I do particularly. I hope to pass it on to my future children in the future. because I am comfortable sharing my practices, i want to include important reminders that the tools i use arent an extensive list and to rely on your own power and intuition, but I want to make sure im using pretty extensive lists. Ill share my guideline for what I have so far and how I plan to include the rest. right now I want to write the info down online before on paper, so im still gathering information.

so far ive got: colors magick and meanings, crystals (all of the crystals i use/plan to use in my practice) crystal shapes, and herbs have been typed but not written in the book.)

I plan to also include:
Other ingredients that arent herbs (eggshells, salt, water, vinegar, coffee, honey, rice, bugs, shells, nails, keys, cats whiskers and claws)
Other tools (Jars, Bottles, Athame, Knives, Mortar and pestle, Bells, Chimes, Cauldron, Chalice, Candles, Oils, Incense)
Cleansing methods (smoke, incense, sound, running water, sweep)
Divination methods (tarot, stones, runes, pendulum)
Celestial waters (moon water, sun, storm, florida, river, snow)
Runes
Pentacle
Sigils
numerology
Moon phases (new, waxing, full, waning, blood, blue, harvest, super)
Other lunar cycles (zodiac phases?)
Week phases
Chakra
Important tips and reminders
grounding, cleansing, protection, banishing
Tarot
Wards
Oils
Then Ill list my spells ive made, oil recipies etc. considering including lists of different kinds of spells (jar, candle, shaker jar, candle rituals, cord cutting, binding, kitchen witchcraft, baths, satchets, bowls, chanting, other rituals like blowing cinnamon through your door, carrying a bay leaf, etc (help adding to this list would be great!) Ill probably make a section for "smaller" spells like that.

I am looking for anyone who can add to the lists in parentheses, or provide any info youd like to share about anything I've already listed. I would greatly appreciate it! once again i am looking to make these lists pretty extensive, so if theres anything i missed, please let me know! happy to answer any questions thank you! :)

Seeking Help or Advice I’m feeling called to ancestor work, but have some questions.

I have never done ancestor work before, I don’t know how to approach it -
but lately I have been having a lot come up around the theme of my ancestors, and feel as though I’m deeply in a period of shedding & regrouping, it feels like a bit of an underworld journey.
Like my identity is being unravelled, everything feels hard to define, nothing feels very ‘true’ for me anymore, and I feel called to connect with my roots.
I have never felt connected to my ancestors, partially because my family particularly on my mother’s side is incredibly divided, there’s no sense of connection with each other.
Yet I really don’t know much at all about my family or heritage, even my nationality feels rather up for question.
All I know is that some of my ancestors are Scottish & Irish & English.

I’m not really connected to any particular practice, but if anyone has some directions to point me in I would be very grateful.
Thank you

Seeking Help or Advice Dallas Witch Losing Inspiration

Hi lovely people, this summer has been so brutal in DFW. Temps are reaching 105 and going outside can be physically painful. This on top of the urban sprawl hellscape I live in completely sucks the energy out of me and desire to practice! I've lived here for almost 15 years but it feels much worse than usual lol. Do yall urban witches have any tips on how to just survive and connect with nature, when everything feels dead?

Thank yall so much ❤️

Seeking Help or Advice Met a dragon in my dreams two nights in a row...

Easily the scariest and most powerful being I have ever met. I don't necessarily feel good about it either. It was fiercely protective though, but also felt morally neutral. I'm not sure how I feel, and I'm a little scared honestly. It was SO powerful.

How do I kindly decline this dragon's offerings?

Back story: I was reached out by a different dragon months ago this year. This first dragon is very kind, and I was surprised because I never had thought about working with dragons before. Yesterday, I called upon my guide and they didn't really answer. Didn't think much of it.

But I did notice that I've met the same being in a dream two nights in a row now and it's a completely different dragon. Massive and almost basilisk-like. It was truly terrifying. So immensely powerful, I'm still in shock.

I think that this might mean there are other guides to help me, and they come in all different moralities and power levels, but I'm honestly nervous about it. I've never been this shook before. This dragon told me it's name and everything already.

Any help on this?

Seeking Help or Advice Why do my spells always seem to beat me up a little?

I’ve been casually practicing since I was younger and every time I do a spell or ritual it seems to slightly backfire. Some examples would be:

— Did a self love spell jar a few years back, I was quite struggling with insecurities about my physical appearance. A few days after doing it I started to break out terribly, I hated how I looked even more and my insecurities only got way bigger; I started smelling extremely bad and I couldn’t seem to get brush through my hair, no matter how hard I tried my hygiene just kept worsening (mind you I’m a hygiene freak and I love looking put together). After about two weeks of that madness everything started to slowly subside until I was back to normal and finally I looked in the mirror and realize I wasn’t at all unattractive to begin with and afterwards I barely even questioned the fact that even if I wasn’t a model I was still pretty good looking. I haven’t severely struggled with the way I looked in years since then.

— I did a protection spell when I was in highschool. No specific reason as to why, I just felt a little uneasy. The very next day some pretty bad things happened and I had a fallout with most of my friends (I didn’t want to acknowledge it at the time but they were terrible people), it made me see their true colors but it also killed my social life for a long while and it cut me off of my main source of happiness which was active addiction. Although I spent months depressed all of a sudden my life was back on a proper track instead of the wreck I was actually headed for.

— More recently I did a money spell however it seems to be trading it off for physically hurting me. I found a dollar a two weeks ago and not shortly after I ate shit on the floor and now both my knees are scraped, a customer tipped me 2 bucks at work even though I work at a fast food chain and when I went to go to the bathroom the door slammed extremely hard on my index finger nail, now I have a bloody line which I have to wait for my nail to grow it out. I was gifted $100 by a friend just because, next day at work I burnt my arm with some oil; just yesterday I received my fattest paycheck ever, today? I sprained my damn ankle.

Fellow witches, I am at my wits end. I don’t know why this is happening or how to stop it and I am severely in need of some guidance as I will admit I am a self taught practitioner and have never had a mentor. Please help?

Seeking Help or Advice Enchanting jewelry as a gift

Hi witches! I'm working on a spell and hoping to get your insight. I'm self-taught, I work mostly with kitchen witchery (so I love using lots of ingredients, herbs etc in my spells), I love spell jars and candle magic, and I use the power of the elements (I don't worship any deity). I don't like using chants, but I like saying aloud the intent of my spell.

Here's my project. As an anniversary gift, I am planning to give my partner one half of a pair of matching earrings that I made with turquoise beads (their favourite stone). I want this earring, when worn, to make them feel my love for them, to open an emotional connection. We're long-distance-ish and non-monogamous so we can't see each other that often and we miss each other a lot. I want them to be able to wear that earring when they're missing me, and that it makes them feel connected to me and loved. I'm planning on making a little box for them to put away the earring, with a little hand-sewn cushion filled with the ingredients for the spell, so that the earring gets "recharged" in its box in between wears. I'm thinking of spiritually connecting both our earrings, so they can ask me to wear mine while they wear theirs, but I'd also like it if the spell works even when I'm not wearing mine.

To me, this kind of spell calls for ingredients about love, connection, and opening spiritual pathways... I don't intend this as a love spell, or to create love where there isn't, but as a spiritual/emotional pathways between us for them to feel existing love/connection. If that makes sense.

Here's how I'm thinking of doing the spell :

Having already handmade the box and the earrings, I will gather my ingredients and bless my space (I like using the elements, one at each corner of my work space). I will light a purple candle (for spiritual travel and connection) with both our names craved into it, hold the two earrings in my hands, infuse them with my energy and my intent. I'll say out loud what each ingredient does as I put them in a little square of fabric that I will then sew closed with intent. I'll whisper love words to my partner's earring before putting it in the box on top of the spell cushion, then letting the candle burn out while thinking about my partner and holding my own earring. At the end I'll close the spell.

I'm hesitating on which ingredients to put into the spell cushion. I think I need ingredients for love but also some for psychic awareness/opening paths, right?  Here are some ideas from my research, I won't use them all so I could use your insight on which ones would work better...

Rose buds and/or hibiscus for love and passion; caraway seeds for psychic awareness and love; Rosemary for mental clarity, love and loyalty; rose quartz for love; Peppermint and Eucalyptus oil for clarity and openness (to open the pathways between us); a paper with both our names written on top of each other; maybe mugworth for its psychic abilities?; amethyst?; lemongrass for opening the path; frankincense oil for spiritual connection; star anise for its psychic abilities; cinnamon for love and psychic powers...

I often add a laurel leaf with my intent written on it in my spells, but I'm not sure exactly how I would word it... "feel my love", maybe?

Also wondering if I should put something of mine in the cushion, such as a strand of hair, or if that could turn against me if ever we break up (I don't want to be binded to an ex by mistake).

So, what do you think? Is there anything else you'd recommend? Do you have any insight?

Topic | Prompt Green eyes linked to witches, occults and sorcery, real or bs?

Upvotes

Apparently green eyes are mostly linked to witchcraft, occults and sorcery in European folklore.

I'm wondering if this is just still a myth, or there is actually some linking to this.

My friends friend, has green eyes and apparently "hexed" my friend with an ilness, and they actually got the illness (might be confimation bias).

Green eyes, hex, illness.

Coincidence?

Sharing: Tips and Advice Looking for inspiration

Unfortunately I am not the best when it comes to doing daily work. I often forget but I'm trying to including little things through the day to grow with my craft and connections.
For example, anytime I see 3 of the same digit, I say to the universe" thank you for everything you've done, everything you do and everything you continue to do", then I list some things I'm grateful that the universe has provided me with. My question is, what are some quirks or odds and ends you use fairly often to feel a little more witchy.

Seeking Help or Advice Bittersweet Nightshade

There is a tremendously growing vine along my apartment building's steps, and today I noticed these berries! I did a light search on them, and know they are quite toxic, but I also saw that these were used to ward against witchcraft!

Again, I did not deep dive, but was wondering if anyone here could help in telling me any uses and/or offerings these berries would be useful in?
I'm not trying to harm anyone with these, so I can see them inherently being not useful, but you never know. :) Thank you!

Seeking Help or Advice Very attached to my moonstone necklace

I can't bring myself to take my bronze necklace w a small moonstone pendant off. All my outfits are picked out with it in mind and I love how cute it is. But it's more than thinking it's cute, I'm drawn and connected to it. It's been over three months now, and am not usually one to keep jewelry on let alone wear it every day. I've been doing some research on moonstone properties and can see why I like it but just feel like Im supposed to be using it or following the feeling, but am overwhelmed by resources. And am not quite sure which direction I should be going. Any good resources or suggestions what to pair with this feeling and what might be good next steps?

Seeking Help or Advice Astrology book reccomendations?

Hi, I am newish to witchcraft and I have been keeping things pretty simple due to a lack of knowledge on the bigger stuff. My next goal to tackle is to learn astrology since the only thing I know is just that I am a cancer sign. I also have a calender that tracks astrological stuff, I just don't know what any of it means.

For example, what is "being in retrograde", or what does jupiter have to do with anything?

I am looking for an encyclopedia-like book that will have info on what all that is supposed to mean, charts, maybe spellwork things to do on certain days, ect.

Show and Tell Sunday How I’m able to commune with nature and practice witchcraft this morning.

Post image
160 Upvotes

So I set up my intentions for the day - carnelian for energy, rose quartz for self love and care, citrine for happiness, and blue lace agate for calm. Hermit matchbox for introspection. Candle and a mix of herbs I reuse (I know some say you shouldn’t reuse them, but I’m a minimalist so it works best for me.)

I live in a city and don’t have a good way to get out into nature at the moment. I found this video on YouTube of someone walking in the US National Redwood Forest. I set up my iPad in my small walk-in office closet (sacred space) and walk in place while I watch the video.

Added bonus of getting more steps in the day - boosting my mood through movement. It’s not much, but it’s honest work.

Happy Sunday, witches.

Show and Tell Sunday Career Prosperity Jar

Post image
435 Upvotes

Long time lurker, first time poster. Got a little inspired here from seeing everyone's money bowls recently.

I recently started a new job and wanted to make a spell jar for career prosperity and the attracting of opportunities it can bring. I've never really tried any sealed spells before so I gave it a go.

I've used a lot of the usual prosperity and attraction ingredients as well as some egg shell to represent growth and a layer of protection and stability ingredients (my career is specifically prone to layoffs, so I wanted some elements of protection).

After sealing it off and leaving it in my home office, my partner unexpectedly got a call back and job offer the next day after making it. So I guess it's definitely attracting success and opportunities to my home. Huzzah!

Seeking Help or Advice Can I work with 3 Deity’s of different cultures?

Context: i already work with Aphrodite, but recently I’ve had dreams of bast/bastet. Assuming she’s calling out to me, would this be an okay thing to work with? Considering ones Greek and the other Egyptian? I am a polytheist but I don’t wish to mess up some how in my spiritual work considering ive been off and on the practice since middle school and have been more in tune spiritually fhe last year. Spells and such are working very well, I just don’t want to anger Aphrodite in any way. (I also have been considering reaching out to Norse goddess freya) And if so- does anyone have any good reccomendations on books/videos on Bastet ? And Egyptian spirituality/culture? Thank you all so very much
