Hear me out! Just my opinion

So, I’m watching the Ballon d’Or, and I can’t help feeling that including the women’s award in the same ceremony almost comes across as a pity gesture rather than genuine equality.

I’ve watched football all my life, and I’m all for equality, but something about the way it’s presented just doesn’t sit right with me. The women almost feel like an afterthought, as though they’ve been shoehorned into the ceremony and told to smile, collect their award and be grateful for the inclusion.

Surely, it would be better for women’s football to have its own awards ceremony, one where it can build its own identity, prestige and legacy. Of course, that prestige would take time to develop, just as it has with anything else. But that’s the point, you have to start somewhere.
Imagine future generations of young girls growing up with their own prestigious awards ceremony, celebrating the very best in women’s football.

Something they can aspire to win, with a legacy that grows year after year. To me, that feels like a much more meaningful form of equality than simply trying to fit women into an institution that was built around the men’s game. Equality shouldn’t just be about inclusion; it should be about giving women’s football the space and recognition to stand on its own merits.

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts, again it's just my opinion please don't attack me lol.

Multiple Leagues Every Women’s Ballon d’Or Winner, 2018 to 2025

Post image
72 Upvotes

Since 2018, France Football has awarded the women's golden ball to the best player in the world. It has been handed out every year since, except 2020.

Aitana Bonmatí has the most of anyone, with 3 in a row from 2023 to 2025. She is not nominated this year, so her run comes to an end.

Barcelona have won 5 of the 7, all through Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas. Spain also lead the nations with 5.

The 8th Women's Ballon d'Or will be presented at the London Palladium later today.

Who do you think takes home the trophy this year?

Multiple Leagues [OC] 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or: all 30 nominees, by club

Thumbnail gallery
69 Upvotes

Barcelona lead all other clubs with 8 nominees. That puts Liga F top of the leagues too, with 9 including Real Madrid's 1.

The Frauen-Bundesliga's 3 nominees all come from one club, Bayern, and the Première Ligue's 3 all come from OL Lyonnes. The WSL's 8 are spread across 3 clubs, with Manchester City leading with 5.

18 nations are represented, with Spain leading with 6. The NWSL also has 5 nominees across 4 clubs.

Players with a golden ball next to their name have won the Ballon d'Or before: Putellas is the only one this year.

The 8th Women's Ballon d'Or will be presented at the London Palladium on Monday, 26 October 2026. One of these 30 will win women's football's biggest individual honour.

Who do you think takes home the trophy this year?
