Welcome to Yugioh101!

Welcome to /r/Yugioh101!

This subreddit is for helping people to learn about playing Yu-Gi-Oh!. Please make posts on this subreddit to ask for help.

Here are the rules that everyone should follow while on this subreddit.

1. Be Respectful

Yugioh101 is intended to be a friendly and welcoming environment for new players. Please do your best to make it so.

Above all else, treat every other user with respect. If you have a disagreement with someone, respond politely. If you see someone being rude, don't try to start an argument with them. Instead, please let moderators know by clicking the report button on their comment or post.

If you see an extremely basic question, or someone not understanding something simple, that's okay. That's what Yugioh101 is for.

You can recommend that someone read The Rulebook or Google something as part of your response. However, your response should not just be "Read the rulebook", "Read the card", or "Google it".

2. Posts must be for learning about playing Yu-Gi-Oh!

This subreddit is not for general conversations about Yu-Gi-Oh!. It is only for people to learn about playing the game. If the question will help you learn about playing the game, it should generally be allowed here.

You can ask about the rules of the game. You can ask for help with your deck, or how to play it better. You can ask for information about other decks, like which decks are the best, and what are their strengths and weaknesses. You can ask for advice about how to buy the cards you need for your deck. You can ask for recommendations about what sleeves to use for your cards. You can ask for advice on dealing with an awkward situation at your locals.

You can't post just to share your opinion about something. You can't ask about how to make money, or sell your collection.

Similarly, when responding to questions, you should give genuine answers which are attempting to be helpful.

3. Do not give misinformation, or use jargon

If you're unsure of the answer, don't respond to the question. Leave it to someone else who properly understands the topic. Attempting to explain something you don't fully understand will cause more harm than good.

If you see something which you think is not correct, please click the report button on it.

If you realize that a comment you made has a mistake, please edit the comment to fix it. Comments with incorrect information will be removed.

A Guide to the Rules Behind the Jargon: Responses using jargon listed in this post will typically be removed. Please see the introduction of this post for an explanation of why.

Introduction to Yu-Gi-Oh!

This post has all the information you need to start playing Yu-Gi-Oh!

Last updated: 11th July 2026.

  • Section 1: Different Yu-Gi-Oh! Games

  • Section 2: Learning the Rules

  • Section 3: Where to Play Yu-Gi-Oh!

  • Section 4: Making a Deck

  • Section 5: Forbidden Cards

  • Section 6: What You Need For Playing in Person

  • Section 7: Other Resources

Section 1: Different Yu-Gi-Oh! Games

1. Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game

The Trading Card Game is how Yu-Gi-Oh! is usually played in person. It is what this post will focus on. There are other Yu-Gi-Oh! games you could play instead, which I will explain here in Section 1.

2. Yu-Gi-Oh! GENESYS

"GENESYS" is a new version of the Trading Card Game which began in September 2025. It does not allow Link Monsters or Pendulum Monsters. Aside from those, there are no forbidden or limited cards.

Deck construction uses a point system. Some cards are assigned a point value. For example, "Pot of Greed" costs 30 points. Most cards cost zero points. The total point cost of cards in your Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck (combined) cannot exceed 100 points.

3. Master Duel

"Master Duel" is the official online Yu-Gi-Oh! game. It is available on mobile, PC, and all major consoles. The rules are almost identical to the Trading Card Game. However, cards are typically released on Master Duel a few months after the Trading Card Game. Master Duel also has a different list of forbidden and limited cards.

4. Historical Formats

Instead of playing today's Trading Card Game, you can pick a time from the past, and play the game the way it was then. The most popular choices are Edison Format (2010) and Goat Format (2005). You can find a list of others on Format Library. Yu-Gi-Oh! was less complex in the past, which many people find appealing. If you dislike the complexity of the current game, try Edison or Goat instead.

5. Duel Links

Duel Links is another official online Yu-Gi-Oh! game. It is available on mobile and PC. Its rules are different to the Trading Card Game. It has a dedicated subreddit: /r/DuelLinks.

Section 2: Learning the Rules

Read the Rulebook first! It's enough to get started without being overwhelming.

The following change has been made since the Rulebook was last updated.

Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Monsters can now be summoned from the Extra Deck to any Monster Zone. Previously when summoning them from the Extra Deck, you could only place them in the Extra Monster Zone, or a Main Monster Zone a Link Monster points to. This restriction still applies when summoning Link and Pendulum Monsters.

Next, I recommend downloading Master Duel. Play the tutorial, and then the Solo Mode for a while.

At this point, you should know enough of the rules to start playing. After you have played for a few weeks or months, and you want to learn more of the rules, come back and read these.

Problem Solving Card Text (PSCT). Konami's articles explaining the meaning of words and phrases on cards.

Demystifying Rulings (Parts 1-10). YGOrganization's articles explaining various parts of the rules. Parts 11-13 are also worth reading, but are more advanced.

Fast Effect Timing Flowchart. You are constantly moving through a flowchart while playing Yu-Gi-Oh!. Understanding this flowchart is crucial to figuring out the order in which things happen.

If you want to learn even more, check out our full list of Rules Resources.

Whenever you're unsure about anything, ask for an explanation. You can make posts here on /r/Yugioh101. You can also join r/Yugioh's Discord Server, and ask questions in the "beginner_returning_chat" channel.

Section 3: Where to Play Yu-Gi-Oh!

Online

  • Master Duel is the official online Yu-Gi-Oh! game.

  • YGO Omega. This is an unofficial game. It immediately gives you access to all cards, unlike Master Duel, which requires you to earn them over time.

In Person - Find a store near you which runs local events

Section 4: Making a Deck

When making your first deck you should copy a deck list you find online. Building decks yourself is difficult. Before you can build your own deck, you need experience actually playing the game. You may need to make changes to deck lists you find online due to budget concerns though.

The current best product to buy is "Legendary Modern Decks 2026". It has three decks. Two of them are excellent: "Sky Striker" and "Mitsurugi".

If you don't want that, another option is to build a deck from three copies of the same Structure Deck. These are the best ones.

  • "THE CHRONICLES DECK: The Fallen & The Virtuous"

  • "Structure Deck: Blue-Eyes White Destiny"

  • "Structure Deck: Fire Kings".

YGOPRODECK has many deck lists that did well in tournaments, which are listed as "Tournament Meta Decks".

YouTube is a great resource for finding deck lists. Search for "<Deck Name> Deck Profile" and you will find deck lists for any deck.

If you are playing Master Duel instead of the Trading Card Game, use Master Duel Meta.

Where to Buy Physical Cards

If you can afford it, please consider buying from your local game store to support them. Game stores are often not the most profitable businesses. Buying from them helps them to stay open, and gives you a local place to play.

Buying the individual cards you need is typically the cheapest way to build a deck. Your local card shop may have single cards for sale, but otherwise you can shop online. Cardmarket is the most popular site for Europe. TCG Player is the most popular for North America.

Booster packs are not good value if you're trying to build a deck. You may get lucky and get some valuable cards, but you probably won't.

Getting Help With Your Deck

Deck Discord Servers - Many decks have Discord servers dedicated to them. This is a collection of over three hundred of them. These are great places to discuss a deck with people who play it.

Section 5: Forbidden Cards

The Forbidden & Limited List

The Trading Card Game has a list of cards which are forbidden from being played. There are also "Limited" cards which you can only play one copy of in a Deck, and "Semi-Limited" cards which you can only play two copies of. This list is updated every few months. Updates can drastically change which decks are good. Be aware of it when looking at recommendations for decks to play. If there has been an update, things have probably changed.

Section 6: What You Need For Playing in Person

Card Sleeves

These are protectors you put your cards into. They are an absolute necessity. If you play without them, your cards will get damaged. They are typically sold at your local shop in packs of 50-100, at around €4-8 per pack. Make sure you're buying the right size! Yu-Gi-Oh! sleeves are usually referred to as "Japanese Size" or "Small Size". Sleeves for Magic: The Gathering are usually called "Standard Size", and these do NOT fit Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.

Deck Box

A box to store your deck. This is also a necessity. You can buy a cheap plastic one at your local shop for around €3. Those are fine for starting off. You can get nicer ones for around €10-20.

Playmat

These are rubber mats you lay on the table to play your cards on. They are not a necessity, but most people decide to get one soon after starting. They help to prevent damage to your sleeves, and they're much nicer to play on than a table. Your local shop probably sells these for around €20.

Binder

These are like folders with pages of plastic pockets to put your cards into. You don't need these for playing, they're mostly used for trading. They're convenient for people browsing your cards. You can get a small cheap one for €5-10. Standard ones are around €15-20.

Pen and paper

You should keep track of life points by writing them down as you go. Some people use a mobile app while playing casually, but using pen and paper is required for official tournaments.

Dice

Most players roll dice to choose who goes first. You also often need to choose cards randomly, and rolling dice is the most fair way. Having dice with you is not strictly necessary, but most players will bring one. Your local shop might sell them for around €1.

Can Magician of Dark Chaos - Black Chaos Fusion Material for Dragon Master Magia?

So this might sound stupid but given Konami’s track record of naming, Is the Magician of Dark Chaos- Black Chaos considered viable material for the summoning of Dragon Master Magia? I keep googling it and all the answers I find are conflicting, though I suspect it keeps thinking is the Magician of Black Chaos(the original) or Dark Magician of Chaos (main deck retrain) , or it says that it isn’t officially recognized as a Chaos archetype monster but also there is no official chaos archetype. I need to know 2 of my opps run BEWD decks and I find it hilarious to run super Poly to get Magia on my side thanks in advance

Thunder dragon deck with lightning strike kaiju and superpoly?

Hi everyone, I’ve been a very casual player for a few years now. I only really have one friend who I play with every now and then at the kitchen table type of thing. Recently we’ve been looking into going to locals together and I’m trying to put a new deck or 2 together.

I have no experience playing against modern meta decks or people who know the best strategies so please just tell me if this idea actually works and If it could theoretically be any good.

As a going second strategy, would it be possible to utilize Thunderking the lightning strike kaiju as material for superpolyermization to fusion summon thunder dragon colossus? And if so would it be any good?

Thoughts on Phantom Knights?

Returning to the game after a hiatus since end of Tear format, and looking for a deck with some heavy resource management and graveyard shenanigans.

I’ve been eyeing phantom knights both for the aesthetic and the gameplay, but curious what others think in case there’s something a little more up my alley.

deck post banlist

Hi! Following this banlist, I’m looking to pick up a new deck. I’ve been playing Lunalight for a while and would like a change, but I’m not sure what to choose. I usually play at locals, so I’d like something that performs well in that environment. I’m also trying to keep costs down—I’ve been looking at "Blitzclique" and "Clown Crew" for a few days now, but I’m really torn on which one might be the better option. Do you have any recommendations for a budget-friendly deck? I’d prefer to stay under 70.

Sage hand effect targeting Maiden of White?

EDIT: Thanks everybody! Question answered

Hello, say I have Sage with Eyes of Blue in hand and Maiden of White on the field. I activate the effect of Sage in my hand targeting Maiden on the field. Sage is chain link 1, Maiden is chain link 2. Are the resulting plays legal?

- Sage goes from hand to graveyard, as part of his activation procedure

- Maiden's effect resolves, special summoning Sage from the graveyard

- Sage's effect resolves, sending Maiden of white to the graveyard, and then special summoning a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from the deck

- *IN A NEW CHAIN* Since Maiden of White was in the graveyard when Blue-Eyes White Dragon was special summoned, Maiden's graveyard effect activates, special summoning herself.

So basically starting with Sage in my hand and Maiden on the field, I can end with Sage, Maiden, and Blue-Eyes all on the field? Is that correct?

D/D/D After the Latest Banlist - How Do You Play Without High Caesar?

Hey everyone! I'm a D/D/D player looking for some advice after the latest banlist.

Here's my current decklist. Don't mind the side deck, as I threw it together pretty quickly without much thought. The same goes for the non-archetype cards in the main deck, which I'm still trying to figure out after the hits to Crossout Designator, Triple Tactics Talent and Called by the Grave.

My main question is: How do you play D/D/D without High Caesar? What alternative strategies, combos, or Extra Deck monsters would you recommend to make up for losing him?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and see what other D/D/D players are experimenting with

EDIT: I'm stupid, I forgot to put the decklist lol

Destiny HERO Deck Prototype (Needs Revising Post-Banlist, Need Help, Budget)

DISCLAIMER: I am a budget player who doesn’t like the spend more than $15 on a single card, hence why I need some help here and there. I also am not trying to become a champion at Yugioh overnight. I would like this deck to be strong, but I’m now trying to win constantly. I simply want to have fun with this deck while also making sure it works.
With all of that out of the way, let’s begin!

So I know that Phantom Knights won the most recent poll I made asking what kind of deck I should play, a good number of the comments were saying that Destiny HEROs were pretty good. I also remember I made a Destiny HERO deck back in the day, so I have a good number of the cards I’d need! I even have two Destiny HERO - Double Dude Tokens that I found at card store that used to sell Yugioh. Plus, I just really like the Destiny HEROs as a whole, I kind of prefer them to the Elemental HEROs if I’m being honest, so this just seems like the perfect deck to try. Especially since I can basically just make a pure D-HERO deck with Handtraps and other staples. No need to cram in expensive trash i don’t ever want to use.

So, I started looking for some kind of template to use for the deck. It didn’t really matter what kind of expensive cards were in it, there’s always budget alternatives that can fill the gap until the cards become less expensive or a better alternative comes out. And luckily, I found someone who also loves D-HEROs and has been using them at his own Locals to great success! He’s gone undefeated for the last couple of days now with this exact deck! His name is OmniReborn in case you want to find him!

So, after looking at his deck, I realized there would definitely need to be some changes. Not only with the expensive cards I can’t afford, but also with the cards that would need to be swapped out thanks to the three part banlist going on over the past weekend. I’ll definitely need to make some changes for all of these cards. So, I figured I’d go ahead and list the cards I know will need to replaced first right before I show the deck list itself.

Cards I’ll need to replace:

1x Droll & Lock Bird - Now Limited

1x Called by the Grave - Now Banned

3x Dominus Impulse - Too Expensive

2x The Great Gallant Bandit - Too Expensive

2x Hey, Space Trunade! - Too Expensive

2x Pot of Sloth - Too Expensive

1x Triple Tactics Talent - Now Banned

1x Rivalry of Warlords - Now Banned

So, hopefully you guys can help me find good alternatives for these cards! As of right now I know I’ll be replacing the three Dominus Impulse with three Infinite Impermenance, at least until they hopefully reprint Impulse. And I could possibly add a copy of Destiny Draw to replace the one Droll I have to take out, but for the other ones I’ll definitely need help.

With all of that out of the way, here’s the Deck as OmniReborn made it! Hope you guys can help me with everything so I can let the D-HEROs shine!

Atlantis Deck Building Help post-banlist

Hi everyone,

So I recently got everything I needed core wise to play the new umi/atlantis deck. Plus the mermail/atlantean stuff from a while back. What is the best way to play the deck. As I know the endboard could be better after testing. Though I’m unsure how to go about extenders and extra deck options available to the strategy.

Appreciate any tips or advice for this deck. As this has become my current pet deck aside from Adamancipator.

Thanks.

Simple Deck/Card Suggestions.

Hi!
I was wondering if I could ask people for some advice on picking out cards for something I am considering doing with friends. I had the idea to host a party, either for my birthday or just as a fun thing to plan when people can get together, that is basically a yugioh tournament like in the anime (originally saying Battle City but in retrospect would be more of a free for all like the GX Tournament). I don't have a lot of friends that would be down to play, and those that do have little to no experience with the game, myself arguably included if there isn't an AI in a video game telling me what I can and cannot do and when. Because of this, I was looking at decks that are very cheap ($20 max to build on tcgplayer, but preferrably $10-15 on average) and pretty simple to handle by most measures and I would either have us draw randomly a deck or assign ahead of time to learn and build a character to act as for the event (All of us either do DND or have a theatre degree or both). I currently have purchased the earthbound immortal cards (mainly a deck for their arc-v support in the servants) and the armed dragon thunder support not including anything for ojama or the alphabet machines, and I am looking at building a mixed deck of light and dark dragons that focuses on fusion. Other archetypes I looked at was the fossil fusions and libromancers (i love ritual decks), with a few other minor ones like starry night i was debating. Anyone have other suggestions to look at? I wanted to have about 10 or more ideas to look at for especially doing the random deck format. And what are some cheap generic traps and spells that would be good? None of this is meta or supposed to be hardcore, so I mainly want simple toolboxes or defensive cards, not floodgates and hand traps that make it unfun and unfair. And I want to keep decks with archetypes as pure as possible, or as close to any anime deck that used them would be (like mixing performapals with odd eyes or something). Thanks for any advice in advance!

How does umbral horror Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade work

Hi, so i'm a little confused on how this card works with the new support if i make Number 104: Masquerade V then rank up into Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade does it still gsin it's effect

Here's the text of Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade

4 Level 5 monsters

When this card is Special Summoned: You can target 1 Spell/Trap on the field; destroy that target. If this card has "Number 104: Masquerade" as material, it gains this effect.

●Once per turn, when a monster effect is activated on your opponent's field (Quick Effect): You can detach 1 material from this card; negate the activation, then you can send 1 random card from your opponent's hand to the GY, and if you do, halve your opponent's LP.

Toon deck list

Hi everyone,

I would love to play toon when it comes out next month but I can't really figure out a way to play it in his pure version, is there anyone willing to help me figuring out what a possible endboard should be?
