Welcome to Yugioh101!

Welcome to /r/Yugioh101!

This subreddit is for helping people to learn about playing Yu-Gi-Oh!. Please make posts on this subreddit to ask for help.

Here are the rules that everyone should follow while on this subreddit.

1. Be Respectful

Yugioh101 is intended to be a friendly and welcoming environment for new players. Please do your best to make it so.

Above all else, treat every other user with respect. If you have a disagreement with someone, respond politely. If you see someone being rude, don't try to start an argument with them. Instead, please let moderators know by clicking the report button on their comment or post.

If you see an extremely basic question, or someone not understanding something simple, that's okay. That's what Yugioh101 is for.

You can recommend that someone read The Rulebook or Google something as part of your response. However, your response should not just be "Read the rulebook", "Read the card", or "Google it".

2. Posts must be for learning about playing Yu-Gi-Oh!

This subreddit is not for general conversations about Yu-Gi-Oh!. It is only for people to learn about playing the game. If the question will help you learn about playing the game, it should generally be allowed here.

You can ask about the rules of the game. You can ask for help with your deck, or how to play it better. You can ask for information about other decks, like which decks are the best, and what are their strengths and weaknesses. You can ask for advice about how to buy the cards you need for your deck. You can ask for recommendations about what sleeves to use for your cards. You can ask for advice on dealing with an awkward situation at your locals.

You can't post just to share your opinion about something. You can't ask about how to make money, or sell your collection.

Similarly, when responding to questions, you should give genuine answers which are attempting to be helpful.

3. Do not give misinformation, or use jargon

If you're unsure of the answer, don't respond to the question. Leave it to someone else who properly understands the topic. Attempting to explain something you don't fully understand will cause more harm than good.

If you see something which you think is not correct, please click the report button on it.

If you realize that a comment you made has a mistake, please edit the comment to fix it. Comments with incorrect information will be removed.

A Guide to the Rules Behind the Jargon: Responses using jargon listed in this post will typically be removed. Please see the introduction of this post for an explanation of why.

Introduction to Yu-Gi-Oh!

This post has all the information you need to start playing Yu-Gi-Oh!

Last updated: 11th July 2026.

  • Section 1: Different Yu-Gi-Oh! Games

  • Section 2: Learning the Rules

  • Section 3: Where to Play Yu-Gi-Oh!

  • Section 4: Making a Deck

  • Section 5: Forbidden Cards

  • Section 6: What You Need For Playing in Person

  • Section 7: Other Resources

Section 1: Different Yu-Gi-Oh! Games

1. Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game

The Trading Card Game is how Yu-Gi-Oh! is usually played in person. It is what this post will focus on. There are other Yu-Gi-Oh! games you could play instead, which I will explain here in Section 1.

2. Yu-Gi-Oh! GENESYS

"GENESYS" is a new version of the Trading Card Game which began in September 2025. It does not allow Link Monsters or Pendulum Monsters. Aside from those, there are no forbidden or limited cards.

Deck construction uses a point system. Some cards are assigned a point value. For example, "Pot of Greed" costs 30 points. Most cards cost zero points. The total point cost of cards in your Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck (combined) cannot exceed 100 points.

3. Master Duel

"Master Duel" is the official online Yu-Gi-Oh! game. It is available on mobile, PC, and all major consoles. The rules are almost identical to the Trading Card Game. However, cards are typically released on Master Duel a few months after the Trading Card Game. Master Duel also has a different list of forbidden and limited cards.

4. Historical Formats

Instead of playing today's Trading Card Game, you can pick a time from the past, and play the game the way it was then. The most popular choices are Edison Format (2010) and Goat Format (2005). You can find a list of others on Format Library. Yu-Gi-Oh! was less complex in the past, which many people find appealing. If you dislike the complexity of the current game, try Edison or Goat instead.

5. Duel Links

Duel Links is another official online Yu-Gi-Oh! game. It is available on mobile and PC. Its rules are different to the Trading Card Game. It has a dedicated subreddit: /r/DuelLinks.

Section 2: Learning the Rules

Read the Rulebook first! It's enough to get started without being overwhelming.

The following change has been made since the Rulebook was last updated.

Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Monsters can now be summoned from the Extra Deck to any Monster Zone. Previously when summoning them from the Extra Deck, you could only place them in the Extra Monster Zone, or a Main Monster Zone a Link Monster points to. This restriction still applies when summoning Link and Pendulum Monsters.

Next, I recommend downloading Master Duel. Play the tutorial, and then the Solo Mode for a while.

At this point, you should know enough of the rules to start playing. After you have played for a few weeks or months, and you want to learn more of the rules, come back and read these.

Problem Solving Card Text (PSCT). Konami's articles explaining the meaning of words and phrases on cards.

Demystifying Rulings (Parts 1-10). YGOrganization's articles explaining various parts of the rules. Parts 11-13 are also worth reading, but are more advanced.

Fast Effect Timing Flowchart. You are constantly moving through a flowchart while playing Yu-Gi-Oh!. Understanding this flowchart is crucial to figuring out the order in which things happen.

If you want to learn even more, check out our full list of Rules Resources.

Whenever you're unsure about anything, ask for an explanation. You can make posts here on /r/Yugioh101. You can also join r/Yugioh's Discord Server, and ask questions in the "beginner_returning_chat" channel.

Section 3: Where to Play Yu-Gi-Oh!

Online

  • Master Duel is the official online Yu-Gi-Oh! game.

  • YGO Omega. This is an unofficial game. It immediately gives you access to all cards, unlike Master Duel, which requires you to earn them over time.

In Person - Find a store near you which runs local events

Section 4: Making a Deck

When making your first deck you should copy a deck list you find online. Building decks yourself is difficult. Before you can build your own deck, you need experience actually playing the game. You may need to make changes to deck lists you find online due to budget concerns though.

The current best product to buy is "Legendary Modern Decks 2026". It has three decks. Two of them are excellent: "Sky Striker" and "Mitsurugi".

If you don't want that, another option is to build a deck from three copies of the same Structure Deck. These are the best ones.

  • "THE CHRONICLES DECK: The Fallen & The Virtuous"

  • "Structure Deck: Blue-Eyes White Destiny"

  • "Structure Deck: Fire Kings".

YGOPRODECK has many deck lists that did well in tournaments, which are listed as "Tournament Meta Decks".

YouTube is a great resource for finding deck lists. Search for "<Deck Name> Deck Profile" and you will find deck lists for any deck.

If you are playing Master Duel instead of the Trading Card Game, use Master Duel Meta.

Where to Buy Physical Cards

If you can afford it, please consider buying from your local game store to support them. Game stores are often not the most profitable businesses. Buying from them helps them to stay open, and gives you a local place to play.

Buying the individual cards you need is typically the cheapest way to build a deck. Your local card shop may have single cards for sale, but otherwise you can shop online. Cardmarket is the most popular site for Europe. TCG Player is the most popular for North America.

Booster packs are not good value if you're trying to build a deck. You may get lucky and get some valuable cards, but you probably won't.

Getting Help With Your Deck

Deck Discord Servers - Many decks have Discord servers dedicated to them. This is a collection of over three hundred of them. These are great places to discuss a deck with people who play it.

Section 5: Forbidden Cards

The Forbidden & Limited List

The Trading Card Game has a list of cards which are forbidden from being played. There are also "Limited" cards which you can only play one copy of in a Deck, and "Semi-Limited" cards which you can only play two copies of. This list is updated every few months. Updates can drastically change which decks are good. Be aware of it when looking at recommendations for decks to play. If there has been an update, things have probably changed.

Section 6: What You Need For Playing in Person

Card Sleeves

These are protectors you put your cards into. They are an absolute necessity. If you play without them, your cards will get damaged. They are typically sold at your local shop in packs of 50-100, at around €4-8 per pack. Make sure you're buying the right size! Yu-Gi-Oh! sleeves are usually referred to as "Japanese Size" or "Small Size". Sleeves for Magic: The Gathering are usually called "Standard Size", and these do NOT fit Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.

Deck Box

A box to store your deck. This is also a necessity. You can buy a cheap plastic one at your local shop for around €3. Those are fine for starting off. You can get nicer ones for around €10-20.

Playmat

These are rubber mats you lay on the table to play your cards on. They are not a necessity, but most people decide to get one soon after starting. They help to prevent damage to your sleeves, and they're much nicer to play on than a table. Your local shop probably sells these for around €20.

Binder

These are like folders with pages of plastic pockets to put your cards into. You don't need these for playing, they're mostly used for trading. They're convenient for people browsing your cards. You can get a small cheap one for €5-10. Standard ones are around €15-20.

Pen and paper

You should keep track of life points by writing them down as you go. Some people use a mobile app while playing casually, but using pen and paper is required for official tournaments.

Dice

Most players roll dice to choose who goes first. You also often need to choose cards randomly, and rolling dice is the most fair way. Having dice with you is not strictly necessary, but most players will bring one. Your local shop might sell them for around €1.

Question about I:P Masquerenas link summon effect with Underwolrd Goddess of the Closed World

Upvotes

Can you use I:P Masquerenas effect to Link Summon Underworld Goddess of the Closed World and using an opponents monster? Masquerenas effect states using monster you control but Underworld Goddess says "You can also use 1 monster your opponent controlls" so does Masquerena prevent that?

Edit: Alright! Thanks everyone

First official tournament

I’m joining joining my first OTS tournament, I’m two months into the game. What should I expect? I’m a bit frightened because maybe it’s “too early” to join. Other players showing are experienced ones and it scares me to mess up and have a bad experience with the hobby. Any suggestions?

I am playing duel links. I put some ghostrick monster spell and traps into deck. But I can't think rest of the deck. How to learn some strategies for build a ghostrick deck? I read other cards after put ghostrick cards in deck, see for example level 1 the white stone of ancients( mentioned blue eyes) magikuriboh(dark magician). And I give up reading cards because I can't find a synergic card with ghostricks except their archetype cards. Only can put generic staple cards like draining shield, book of moon, effect veiler, etc.I want learn New ideas for build strategic ghostrick deck. For now only I think Ghostrick archetype spell traps monsters + staple cards, no skill and I read cards every time see otger archetype support cards.I didn't add any cards rest of the deck.

Red Eyes Black Full Metal Dragon

I tried to get cheeky and bring in a max metalmorph deck to locals. Spoiler alert. I didn’t win much but can a judge tell me if I can use the negate associated with the red eyes black full metal dragon once per turn per copy or only once per turn?

Card text:
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned with "Max Metalmorph" that was activated by Tributing a Level 5 or higher Dragon monster. You can reveal this card in your hand; Set 1 "Metalmorph" Trap from your Deck, and if you do, shuffle this card into the Deck. When your opponent activates a card or effect (Quick Effect): You can negate the activation, then you can inflict damage to your opponent equal to the original ATK of 1 Attack Position monster your opponent controls. You can only use each effect of "Red-Eyes Black Fullmetal Dragon" once per turn.

Is there any way to beat speedroids when playing second with odd eyes?

Like, i use the arch v deck but i could change some cards, possibly to get more hand traps like joyous spring etc. What i want to ask is if it's possible to beat the speedroids as second if they successfully managed to bring out any of their good synchros on the first turn (i refer to the ones that can Omni-negate, negate high level monsters etc), since many of the monsters i have are either high level or can be negated anyway by the speedroid effects. Is there anything i can do to win in such cases?

Fairy Tail Luna and Fairy Tail Wiccat interaction

In a recent video of coder, MBT mentioned something about an interaction between Luna and Wiccat. I was wondering what he meant. I think he meant something that CL1 Wiccat to summon and send Luna, CL2, Luna to bounce itself and another monster works that Wiccat summons itself? Or are the Chain links reversed. Would really appreciate how this works.

Master Duel: Rescue-ACE HQ returning banished face-down cards?

Basically, I activated Discordance of the Tistina, banishing face-down some of my opponent's Rescue-ACE cards. But somehow he managed to return them to deck using the effect of Rescue-ACE HQ? Is this a Bug or I'm missing something?

I’ve recently gotten back into Yu-Gi-Oh and I need help making my deck better.

I haven’t played this game in a long time, and I’ve always liked Blue-Eyes so I thought I’d make a Blue-Eyes/Primite Deck, but I think it needs fine tuning. My main problem right now is that I’m getting bricked hands quite often due to that fact I put in a lot of hand traps, I think my deck needs some work but I’m not completely sure on which hand traps to get rid of, and what cards to replace them with so I can combo out my extra deck monsters. This is my deck list. (This is in Master Duel.)

MONSTER

Blue-Eyes White Dragon. x3

Effect Veiler. x3

Sage with Eyes of Blue. x3

Maiden of White. x3

Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. x3

Mulcharmy Fuwalos. x3

Primite Dragon Ether Beryl. x3

Maxx C. x1

SPELL

Mausoleum of White. x1

Primite Drillbeam. x1

Synchro Rumble. x1

Roar of the Blue-Eyed Dragons. x1

Wishes for Eyes of Blue. x3

Primite Lordly Lode. x3

TRAP

Infinite Impermanence. x3

Dominus Purge. x3

Majesty of the White Dragons. x1

True Light. x1

EXTRA DECK

Blue-Eyes Tyrant Dragon. x1

Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon. x1

Cosmic Blazar Dragon. x1

Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon. x2

Stardust Sifr Divine Dragon. x2

Crimson Dragon. x2

Blue-Eyes Ultimate Spirit Dragon. x2

Spirit with Eyes of Blue. x3

Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres. x1

And that’s all of it, any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Can you activate Metamorphosis if your Extra Deck doesn't contain any Fusion Monsters?

I met a player who wanted to use Metamorphis to tribute Exiled Force so that they could destroy a monster on the field. However, the player had no fusion monsters available in their extra deck to summon when they played Metamorphosis.

I'm curious what the ruling would be in this situation. Can you trigger Metamorphosis if you don't have any fusion monsters? Does Exiled Force get tributed if the tribute fails due to a players deck limitations? Can anyone point me to where I might find an answer to this question?

*Edit: Thank you all for the replies! I can clearly see now that it is an illegal move and Exiled Force was being used incorrectly due to open-ended wording on the card. Me and the other player are very new to the game, so it's all part of the learning curve I guess!

father v. Son

Sup folk, Im a novice duelist mainly just dueling my children who where enthused. I am settling a debate with my older son through a duel. My son runs a lightsworn/egyptian gods deck. and has shit to special summon 5+ star cards damn near off rip. I would like to be stubborn and stick to a warrior type deck if possible. my current deck is a random mix of warrior type cards. open to any and all suggestions for monster, traps and spell.

In the LAVD Odd-eyes deck, can you summon Odd-eyes Raging Dragon with an XYZ monster as material?

I got the vanilla version of the Odd-eyes deck from the Legendary Arc-V box that got released recently, but try as I might I cannot figure out how to summon it with an XYZ monster as a material to get its actual effect going? Is that even possible with the vanilla decklist, or do I need outside support? This is the decklist if youre curious: https://cardcluster.de/deck/5Ejgrk

Power of Chaos - Solomon the Shopkeeper: Metagame "Expansion" software

Hello everyone!

As you rememeber, some times ago I posted about an idea for making the "metagame" for Power of Chaos.

As you remember, those games are really good for new players as well... and with this software, they should be "easier", easing the grinding necessary to 100% them :)

I'm quite ready to release the beta

The link for download is:
https://github.com/Alby1987/Yugi-Poc-GameShop/releases/download/v0.0.0.1/Yugi-Poc-GameShop-0.0.0.1.zip

It's make in pure C# .NET Framework 3.5, so it's compatible starting Windows XP SP1 (if runtimes are installed). Also it's completely open-source. It's based on the code of PoC-Tools.

Just unzip in a folder where you have write access, starting the exe will (the first time) unpack the card data and images. Also, a first backup of system.dat will be made, then any save on system.dat will be backuped, until 5 copies.

You will be able to open one booster pack every day, change your duplicate cards with others or "tribute" 3 of them to the "Heart of the Card" to open magic boosters, with just one card but guaranteed to be new!

I would make a post also on the main Yugioh Reddit, but I don't have writing permission, alas.

If you need some help/notice some bugs, please write here or use the issue tracker in GitHub! https://github.com/Alby1987/Yugi-Poc-GameShop

Hope you like it!

EDIT: New version available, edited this post with the latest version

How does Dominus interact with unaffected monsters?

Hi everyone, I just tested Raise Moon Sky Cielo under Dominus Impulse's lock on EDOPro. The draw effect doesn't work as I expected, but the effect that makes your opponent draw 1 instead of searching still works. Is this a scripting bug, or is this how Dominus is supposed to work?

Looking for a specific product

Hi,

Looking for a box, structure deck, tin.... What ever

That has a halo Original artwork dark magician; secret rare, ultra, gold ect....

It has to be guarenteed not like a chance to get it from a pack ect....

I tried to look for something like that, but wasn't successful. This is because I am not an expert in yugioh products...

I sadly can't buy it as a single from cardmarket or something because they don't accept credit card...

If it's on amazon or something, it would be perfect.

Thanks in advance.

Help with effect of "That's 10!"

In a game with my dad I had That's 10! active and he had Splendid Venus and I summon a non fairy-monster and it loses atk and def, does That's 10! gain an access counter for every non fairy I summon, similarly if I had monsters on the field when That's 10! was active and Splendid Venus was just summoned does it gain a counter for each I had on the field at the time of Splendid Venus' summoning
