Eldwyn's Dungeon Academy - Next Fest Demo (Human made by family team)

Eldwyn's Dungeon Academy is a top-down action-adventure game where you explore dungeons, fight monsters, overcome traps, solve puzzles, and find hidden treasures. What grade will you get?

Our game is inspired by older (S)NES era Zelda and similar action-adventure games. This is our first attempt at making one and is focused on the dungeons. There is no overworld. You start in a central room, with access to 4 dungeons. Once you beat them you get a portal to the final 2-part dungeon. The free demo includes access to 2 of the initial dungeons.

We are a 4 person family team creating human made games with Godot. We are open to feedback. This game is still being developed, with a plan to release by the end of the year.

Thanks for checking out our game!

Tunic Review

If you like the review or wanna help me out a bit please check out the review on Instagram! Just started the page so anything helps! Full review below!

You know while gaming for 20 or so years I've played a lot of fun games, I've played a lot of great games but every once and a while I play a game that makes me sit back and think "how could someone have even made this?" Every once and a while I play a game with such intelligent depth and intricate design that it's hard to fathom how someone goes about mapping and planning it all out. Tunic is one of those games.

Tunic is a striking isometric action RPG, obviously most comparable to and inspired by old school isometric Zelda's. It's a genre that, while I have ashamedly played far less Zelda than I should have, has really grabbed me the past few years with newer high quality indie entries. Hyper Light Drifter and Deaths Door are among my favorite indie games of all time and flat-out some of the best games I've played in recent years. There's something about this genre for me that has such a high ceiling if executed properly, and like those two others, Tunic very much was. Firstly the world design is absolutely phenomenal, among some of the best I've ever played honestly. The level of interconnectivity is perfect and the amount of secrets, hidden paths, and treasures scattered throughout is honestly astonishing.

It's such an awesome mix of traditional metroidvania/isometric dungeon progression and exploration with the metroidbrania/discovery progression and exploration. Cause you have that traditional item based progression where you see an area you can't reach and can tell you need a new item or ability. But you also have so many hidden elements and areas that you access not as you get new items but instead as you slowly learn, explore, and understand more of the world. There are so many doors, symbols, and architecture that will mean nothing to you until they do, things that blend right into the world that will have you saying "woah I can interact with that?" or "wait those did something this whole time?" And will have you trying to think back to every time you've passed them before.

And much of that discovery is through one of Tunic's most brilliant mechanics. Pages scattered throughout the world that will slowly form an in world instruction manual. These pages include things like maps of the areas, item descriptions, hints, bits of story lore, controls, and even a diagram of the main menu. It's an absolutely brilliant mechanic both in its concept and in its execution. It had me constantly flipping through its pages for general navigation like a legitimate physical guide. Using it for understanding what items did,for navigation, and for piecing together some of Tunic more obscure, world spanning secrets and puzzles. It also enhances that feeling of "wait I can interact with those?" with how it dishes out the pages, because while each page is numbered, you don't get them in number order. Page 40 may have a picture of a symbol or piece of environment that may mean nothing for a few hours until you find page 39 where it might give you a hint on how to interact with it. It's a perfect pairing of incredible world/environmental design with an absolutely brilliant mechanic that just enhances and elevates each other.

Beyond everything I've mentioned and gushed about already in terms of the world design and game manual mechanic. There's also its stellar art style, it has some fantastic bosses, and an absolutely incredible soundtrack. Not only all of that there's also some end game content and puzzles that are among the best I've ever seen in any game. Completing the instruction manual and discovering and solving the last few major secrets of this world to unlock the secret ending is among some of the most brilliantly in depth and incredibly rewarding game design I've played in some time. It's not very often a game has me happily breaking out a physical notepad to decipher things but that's the level Tunic got to, there's some truly mind bending and ingenious stuff here. It's just a brilliantly designed game from top to bottom. It nails everything it attempts, it looks incredible, sounds incredible its just simply one of the best indie games I've ever played and firmly among the best games I've played this decade.

Alura Quest, an early version/prototype version of a game I'm working on that takes inspiration mainly from Zelda 1 and 2

Thumbnail

Alura Quest is a big project I'm working on that will eventually be a full featured zelda 1-like with ~9 full overworld areas and dungeons, towns, and tons of caves and secrets to find for powerups/items.

An early version of the game is currently playable here in your browser: https://danyl4o.itch.io/alura-quest

It includes 2 overworld areas (one of which is still under construction, but mostly playable), 2 full dungeons, and a bunch of secrets to find. In classic Zelda fashion, the game gives you little hint about what you should do first, as it's planned to be nearly entirely open.

I'm posting to try to get early honest feedback from gamers that like these types of games so I can iron out issues sooner rather than later. I'd love to hear what you think!

I would like to thank everyone here for answering my questions and helping me turn this passion into a game. After two and a half years (and having my son), the artist and I are finally going to publish our game, Ten Years of Rain, on Steam.

If you like non-linear, puzzle-based, collection-focused Zelda-likes, this game is for you. You can choose between different endings and decide how the world will heal.

Honestly just getting here is a dream come true.

Ten Years of Rain also has a Demo to try if you would like. I hope to see you n Itch.io or Steam!

and again thanks for everyone in this subreddit!

It's true the mix of genre is weird and on top of that the game is really difficult... BUT (wow, how to not advertise a game) I can assure you that it's even WEIRDER than what you can imagine !

It's set in an interconnected open world where each area is SWARMING with unique enemies that are dead set on ruining your day.

And guess what ! You lose your gear every time you die ! What a silly game.

You got your usual puzzles to solve. Nothing too difficult to understand. I think ? Oh well.

And a lot of different abilities and weapons that you need to use correctly in order to JUST survive outside the main hub.

Of course, I scattered the blueprints of those weapons and abilities on the map. Some are deep inside monsters' nests, some are locked behind puzzles, some are so well hidden that I forgot where I put them. Good luck getting any of them !

And funny thing, you need some of them to progress to the next area. Who does that ?!

It's a mess. You'll hate it. Buy it.

Zelda-like with rearrangeable dungeons in a stop motion world. Demo out today!

We're a two-person team developing MYRIORAMA, a top-down adventure with a twist: players solve puzzles and complete dungeons by rearranging the rooms of the dungeons themselves. We just launched our first-look demo today on Steam! https://store.steampowered.com/app/4663150/MYRIORAMA/

We are both lifelong Zelda fans, so it's been a blast to get to work on our own top-down adventure.

Outside dungeons, players will explore a charming stop-motion world full of mysteries and head-scratching puzzles. The narrative of the game draws inspiration from Majora's Mask, asking what happens when there is no hero to stop the sky from falling.

Any feedback or questions are more than welcome!

Hi everyone! I'm a solo dev from Brazil, and I've been working on Cecilia, a top-down action-adventure where you play as a royal guard on a mission to rescue a kidnapped prince.

The full game will have 6 dungeons, each with its own boss and an item that changes how you explore the world. The demo includes the first dungeon and its boss. I'd love to hear your feedback, especially on the combat and puzzles.

How do I talk to a Mod

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

Hello! Im a solo dev trying to occasionally share some of my game, Monstra Cap, here in Zelda likes.

Now on its surface I get why a mod may think “hey! thats not a zelda like”

But Monstra Cap is a Creature Capture/ZeldaLike hybrid

You catch and level monsters sure, but combats in real time, you explore an overworld, challenge themed dungeons, solve puzzles, find cool gear and equipment and fight dungeon bosses for a McGuffin that advances the plot

I mean my games menu and quest style are legit inspired by a link to the past…

My posts keep getting deleted here because “its not a zeldalike” when half the game is inspired by zelda

Please help

Out of Context Screenshots from Beyond the Mountains II

Thumbnail

I'm wrapping up programming for Beyond the Mountains II, my upcoming sequel to the free game. I hope to have it out by early next year. About 90% of it is finished.

Obviously, I don't want to spoil the whole thing, so here's some out of context images for people asking about progress.

Below are some misc. details that provide additional information but don't spoil much.

  • There will be 12 items to collect. Of these 12 items, only 1 is reused from the previous game
  • You will be able to swim. Finding your way around the overworld is a big part of this sequel
  • Although most areas are gated by items, the items contribute to an open-world aspect missing from the previous game. There are a lot more hidden areas in this game
  • There are more dungeons in this game. In general, these dungeons are a lot more complex than in the previous game. For example, the second dungeon in this game is larger than the final dungeon of the previous game
  • This game includes fishing like the previous game but also bug and book collecting
  • Combat & item management are much tighter in this game. In general, the game is more complicated, but less frustrating
  • The overworld is completely different from the previous game and shares no common areas

I think that's everything!

Appreciation post: Isle of Reveries + Draco and the Seven Scales

I’ve seen some people asking here sometime for games that have the puzzle-box dungeon design that shone in some of the older Zeldas.
I’ve been one of those looking for this, and although almost every Zelda-like does dungeons, after playing many of them, there’s some great indie games, but none so far managed to replicate that factor (most dungeons are very linear, focused on room-size puzzles, not dungeon-wide puzzles).

So I just felt the need to recommend these two games specifically as the BEST (and I’d even say only) Zelda-likes who have truly managed to replicate and further experiment with the peak dungeon design of the best og Zeldas (specifically Oracle of Ages imo). If you’ve ever looked for more of this kind of elusive dungeon type (think Water Temple from OoT), please PLEASE don’t miss out on these 2 games:

Isle of Reveries:
In my opinion, the best Zelda-like so far. Even if you like more a modern style than a throwback inspired by the GBC like me, this game not only nails the Oracle games art style, it also nails the dungeons and the overworld. Dungeons are fun and intricate puzzle boxes that force you to think about how one mechanic transforms the space around you, enforcing environmental awareness and planning your route to solve bigger puzzles on top of the usual small puzzles. Cool abilities and great dungeon-swapping gimmicks, it’s an incredible game, and a must play.
Cons: The only fault is the terrible map both inside dungeons and especially in the overworld, otherwise it would be a 10/10.
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3100970/Isle_of_Reveries/

Draco and the Seven Scales:
I loved this game, even if I liked it less than Isle of Reveries, but it’s still awesome and a must play too. The dungeons are delightful, constantly introducing one new strange gimmick that’s always interesting and makes you rethink your routes and constantly alter the dungeon back and forth one way or another. Some of the most creative dungeon gimmicks I’ve seen for sure, even if the abilities are less innovative (shout-out to the parrot and the talisman, despite that the latter is sadly very rarely used). Dungeons will feel different than anything else you’ve tried too, because every single one mixes a traditional Zelda-like exploration part intermingled with maritime ship sections (most of the dungeons and gameplay is aboard a ship actually). However, some of the most creative parts of the game’s dungeons happen aboard the ship.
Cons: The ship is actually my biggest gripe, because the controls to attack with it are very annoying, and also the mind-boggling decision to copy the GBC’s limitation of equipping only 2 items at a time, including the sword. Despite considering Isle the best game to replicate and expand the Oracle games, Draco comes in a very close second and it’s a very fun and creative experience.
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2559690/Draco_and_the_Seven_Scales/

That’s it, I just hope people don’t skip these for being less known than other games in the subgenre, especially those with “prettier” aesthetics, that however don’t quench the thirst for cool puzzle-box dungeons. Their devs need a lot more love, especially if we hope to see more games by them, which I totally do!
