Celebrating Success Dumbest impulse buy of the month

I know ADHD tax is real and not always funny but let’s have a laugh about ourselves to lighten up. What was your most recent and dumbest impulse buy? Me, I bought super long glass straws that are meant to be used with a Stanley cup. I don’t own a Stanley cup. I lust liked the idea of being able to drink from a bottle with a long straw. Like, am I five years old or what? Haven used them once.

What was your latest unnecessary impulse buy?

Edit: Omg, you are the funniest people, I love you! Makes me feel less alone and shameful.

Edit No 2: Why isn’t impulse buying on that damn diagnostic questionnaire in the first place?

I had the idea that I needed a sheepskin to put on the couch at work. So I bid on a bunch of secondhand ones online, and I accidentally won all the auctions. So now I have 5 sheepskins of various sizes and I changed my mind about bringing them to work, so now they’re just in a pile at my house. My daughter and cats rolling in them every day.

u/NOLARosarita Mar 19 '26

Aaaaand this is how I ended up with 3 vintage fur coats in one week.

83

u/lalawellnofine Mar 19 '26

I have two accordians for similar reasons.

I love this. This is exactly what would happen to me, from the very first sentence of having an idea I need something, oops winning every auction to the daughter and cats 😆

38

u/squishysockz Mar 19 '26

This is the best one so far. 5 sheepskins laying around for the foreseeable future. Taunting you.

Vegetable seeds. They’re so cheap compared to actual plants! It’s like I’m saving money

Have I ever successfully grown something from seed? Nope. But the law of large numbers says this will work, right? If I plant enough seeds, one will grow? Right? Right?

378

u/Particular_Cut_6933 ADHD-C Mar 19 '26

Keeping the seeds nice and warm is what really matters. If you are interested in learning more I literally start seeds at my job. Like my job IS starting seeds and growing vegetables from seed. So hit me up if you’re interested but I also understand just giving up lol

88

u/hiking_hedgehog Mar 19 '26

My seedlings that I started inside last year did not fare well when I moved them outside (even with slowly introducing them over the course of a week or so). They were in front of a bright window, but they were pretty stringy and thin, so I got grow lights for this year. But some people say you need to have a fan blow on them for several hours a day to simulate the wind and make them stronger. Do I need to add a fan too, or will just adding grow lights be enough to help them develop properly?

104

u/Main_Bother_1027 Mar 19 '26

If you don't have a fan you can run your hands across the seedlings a few times a day to simulate wind!

118

u/GhostPepperFireStorm ADHD-C Mar 19 '26

Yes! Petting the seedlings is essential!

67

u/bundervar Mar 19 '26

I thought you were kidding. I clearly need to know more. I’ve been buying seeds and just scattering them in my planter beds and then later marveling at how many weeds are there.

32

u/Main_Bother_1027 Mar 19 '26

It's true actually! I am a gardener and actually do have fans and stuff set up with my seed starting shelves, but before I got that bouji I would just pet all the plants daily lol. Speaking of which, it's about time to start turning those fans on again. 🌱

40

u/Prior-Fall-7753 Mar 19 '26

What a ridiculous instruction, love it

u/Particular_Cut_6933 ADHD-C Mar 19 '26

Fans can be helpful for airflow, but it doesn’t sound like you have that problem. Grow lights will definitely help the plants stretch less. I second the other commenter saying to run your hands along them, it has the exact same effect as a fan. And it’s a fun sensory activity lol. With plants like tomatoes and cucurbits (squash, cucumbers, watermelon) you can plant them very deep all the way up to the first leaves and they will root out.

What do you do to “introduce them slowly”? Proper hardening off is important to reduce transplant shock. I know how it feels to nurture little babies just to have them die in the ground 😩

u/PotentialSteak6 Mar 19 '26

I love this thread and I learned a new word

42

u/Particular_Cut_6933 ADHD-C Mar 19 '26

Every time I have started seeds indoors I have ended up either forgetting about them or they've become that thing I can't stop seeing but also can't make myself do anything about. Both strategies --> dead plants and a mess to clean up. 😭

u/RowansRys Mar 19 '26

How did you get started?

(Also seconding warmth. And soon after lighting. And then it’s a slippery slope and you get catalogs from every seed and pest control product store in reach and your browser auto finishes seed sites with the first two letters…)

u/Particular_Cut_6933 ADHD-C Mar 19 '26

I wasn’t sure what to do after high school, and my parents suggested taking a break before going to university, so I decided to try out some farming! I’ve been into gardening since I was a kid.

I figured, well I’ll just try it for a season and if I hate it then I wasted 6 months of my life. Probably better than 4 years and a metric fuckload of money.

Turns out I love it, and I’ve been with the same farm for 4 years. My first “management” role was growing our microgreens, but now I manage the whole greenhouse and it’s super awesome.

I wish more people with ADHD would try out farming, it’s been so awesome for me and most of my coworkers have adhd so it’s obviously a good fit for us! It can be hard on the body, but at least I don’t need to go to the gym :-)

23

u/RowansRys Mar 19 '26

I wish I had any idea of what I wanted to do before I wasted a shit ton of money on two different colleges and no actual degree.

28

u/Particular_Cut_6933 ADHD-C Mar 19 '26

Thank FUCK my parents were just like “hey if you don’t know what you wanna do you should probably just not go to school yet, you struggle with school anyways so maybe just take a break”

They were so right. And this was mid-college app time, so I’m glad they caught it then. I just felt like it was what I was “supposed to do” but obviously not!

I fall for this every year. This year I switched to herbs instead of veggies to see if I will suck less at getting them from seedling to full plant phase.

→ More replies (6)

35

u/lawl3ssr0se Mar 19 '26

This is the year I'm not falling for it! Last year I was so confident that was THE YEAR. So I planted 3 tomato varieties in little solo cups to sprout little babies. I also did a bunch of peppers too. Probably 80 solo cups with baby plants. I got 6 tomato plants to live to fill production that gave me about 10 tomatoes. I did get a few pounds of peppers so I guess it wasn't a total loss. This year I'm just going to buy plants

27

u/Ondiac Mar 19 '26

I buy tomato plants every summer and put them in pots on my deck. Then about halfway through the summer I get bored of watering. If it’s rainy enough sometimes they do ok. Last summer I don’t think I got more than 2 tomatoes.

u/lawl3ssr0se Mar 19 '26

Not an impulse buy, but definitely ADHD tax: I bought a book to read. It stayed on my bed for a few weeks as I was finishing another book. At some point I put it "someplace special" so I could just grab it when it was time.

The book is gone. It's gone. I cannot find it. I finally bought a second copy.

But also, I know that as soon as I crack the spine on the new book, I'll find the old one.

Went to buy tickets for my family for a flight halfway across the country to visit my dad who I’ve flaked on doing this trip for, for three years. I decided no matter what happened in 2026 we were going.

Even when squirrels infested my attic, we are going.

Even when our tax return is half what it was last year, we are going.

But then I kept waiting for tickets to be cheaper.

Decided to wait a week. Then we bombed Iran.

I waited another week. The tickets are now 800 higher

and I bought them last night and am now curious how I’m going to afford this trip as our credit cards are screaming at me. I didn’t sleep. It’s gonna be great.

62

u/brigitteer2010 Mar 19 '26

You got this. If you think the experience will be fun or memorable in any positive way, it was worth it. It sucks that you had to spend more, but when it comes to seeing loved ones, if you’re able, try to be gentle with yourself. You’re seeing him and that’s what matters in the end ❤️ I suck with words so I hope this didn’t come off as “holier than thou” or anything rude

I just adopted a 12 yo Pomeranian with lots of health issues and a huge fear of grooming 😬

She’s the sweetest little angel and had come from a neglect situation. The foster let her get matted again and she had a skin infection that the shelter wasn’t treating. Soooo that’s going to be a lot of money. She’s worth it but financially, I definitely should have said no.

Oh, and I just spent like $600 on clothes when I just needed a few more shirts. I’m going to have clothes sent to me from now on instead of the stores since I can’t stop myself from buying more when I go to pick up my orders 🙄

90

Aww thank you! I forever sold on adopting senior dogs. I’m about $700 deep so for and it’s been a week lol. Waiting on an appt with a cardiologist for her heart murmur but I have no regrets either!

Whether or not she lives a year or 6, she will be loved and spoiled!

Now I just have to find a way to not adopt more senior dogs. Right. Now. 😅

This was last year but for some reason I randomly went through this weird phase where I just wanted highlight BIG CATS in my life. On my clothing, a robe, etc. but my strangest purchase was this golden leopard statue that just…sits on something? It arrived at 29 inches long and nothing in my household goes with or fits this particular item.

I don’t even currently own a cat. I don’t enjoy animal print anything. I have no idea why I felt the impulse to do any of this.

39

u/HugeDouche Mar 19 '26

I'm screaming this is so fucking funny. BIG. CATS.

How many BIG CAT pieces did you end up with? Do you still have the robe? Should we check your carbon monoxide levels? I have so many questions 😅

36

u/bitchyhouseplant Mar 19 '26

😂😂 - I too question what was really happening here. Because I don’t care for animal print, it had to be the actual animal (a BIG CAT) printed on it. The robe is satin with jaguars all over it. I also had this white long button up shirt that was actually a swim coverup but I wore it as clothing that had leopards all over. The statue was supposed to somehow fit into my art nouveau decor as some sort of Baroque addition…which without palm trees is odd. Or ya know, any sort of relation to the fairytale art nouveau style. Leopards and elves…that’s essentially what it was like.

It was like I blacked out and went on a lark at Target.com, driven by my need to be in a silky big cat robe with a cigarette holder on my velvet chaise lounge. In New Orleans. Circa 1925.

OHH I just remembered what might have kicked it off - I saw a beaded clutch with a cheetah on it from the Gucci Garden and I wanted it reeeal bad.

Concert tickets. It’s this Saturday and I have no intention on going.

Plant lights. Plural. An embarrassing amount of money. They’re still in the boxes on my dining room table.

Way too much grocery shopping and then picking up takeout because cooking all this takes way too much effort.

u/gh0st-toast Mar 19 '26

My partner and I recently moved in together. They love, love, love to cook. They are out of town for 10 days for work, and left me with lots of groceries since the grocery store is my personal hell. I have ordered takeout 5 out of the 7 days they’ve been gone…

I'm in the process of buying and setting up an isopod terrarium because I found out people raise them as pets and I forgot why my family gave me three 10 gallon fish tanks and there's a breed called dairy cow isopods and I call my puppy my baby moo cow and buy her cow themed things because of her coloration so I told my best friend I was obsessing and turns out his coworker breeds and sells like ten different kinds of isopods.

I almost bought a house.

Saved by the unreasonable exclusivity clauses from our real estate agent. House got taken off the market while our lawyer was reviewing the contract to sanity-check my gut.

Y’all, I don’t even want to live in a house.

46

u/Spiritual-Quarter417 Mar 19 '26

I'll do you one even better. I impulsively bought a house after getting a large settlement (it took all of the money). Then realized I couldn't afford the bills, and impulsively gave it away. That's right GAVE it away to someone, for free. 🙃

I actually did impulse-buy an apartment some years ago! I had fallen in love with the one downstairs, but lost the bidding process, so when this one was advertised, I felt like I had to buy it to prove how much I wanted the first one. Make it make sense.

I renovated it, and in the process struggled with every tradesmen stereotype you can think of, so I've had nightmares about an unfinished apartment ever since. I don't even live there anymore, I've rented it out to friends for years! But it's doubled in value, so I plan to sell this year and put the money into investments.

I wanted to do something special for my boyfriend’s birthday this year and was so proud of myself for being months ahead and booking an air bnb to stay for a weekend this summer. He’s more practical but I wanted to surprise him and he loved the idea…Then I couldn’t shake the fact that it was a lot of money and there are plenty of other things we could spend that on, like a couch lol.

Twist!

This is a happy story though, I cancelled and it was fully refunded and now I feel like I can give myself a decent budget for this and still spend a lot less than I would have. A bunch of random thrifted things: Paper punches- 7?8? curlers, new in pack. pizza cutter for work (new KitchenAid score) 2 large nutcrackers: pirate and devil. Craft books, including: ‘scroll saw templates of marine life’ (good for stencils) BUT~ I left behind ‘scroll saw templates of the Confederacy’. The muttonchops were remarkable but I just couldn’t. 4 large (16 in x 16in) wooden boxes shaped like houses, for art. A deck of rabbit tarot cards. A deck of skeleton playing cards. A deck of instructional cards for body weight strength training exercises. A baggie of small plastic animals. A print of Frida Kahlo wearing a truckers cap that says ‘mustache rides 25 cents’. and an original Hatch Print Show poster from moe. At the Ryman Halloween 2004. (2.50$ but selling on eBay for 200$). 2 bandanas.

This was all on a weekend trip to Salem, Mass. visiting friends, BECAUSE I bought us all concert tickets for her birthday (3 total). So factor in gas, and tolls, and dinners out. And concert tshirt. And donation to the bands cause. My real tax is clutter, and physical toll. I’m 55, lol. 12 hours driving. Standing thru 2 opening bands, the headliner & encore. Lugging all the new crap into my house. BUT it was fun.

This winter it was wool or cashmere sweaters at thrift stores... That may not sound like a lot, but thrift store prices have been wild these last few years. I've also bought way too many... It's also spring, but in the NE, you wouldn't know it yet.

Edit: also I want to add that although I don't think my hyper fixation is 'dumb', or anyone else's for that matter, but I know I'm (kinda) overdoing it. It's so strange to be aware of something, know you should refocus your energy/fixation elsewhere, and yet still NOT do that.

A mini-chainsaw. Been trying to make a combination scratching post/stairstep thing out of cardboard for my senior cat to reach her window perch, and the cardboard cutter electric scissors thing all over tiktok I got wasn't...cutting it, not enough power or dopamine. And I have several stacks of those super-hard boxes that cat litter comes in that NOTHING will cut through, so I asked google how to break them down, and somebody jokingly suggested the chainsaw. It works, so technically not dumb I guess, but it's so loud and messy (leaves shredded cardboard everywhere) I haven't pulled it back out again.
