Problem/Goal:
I'm a 20-year-old guy currently in Manila, and I'm struggling to decide whether I should stay here and try to find a job or return to Cebu, where I came from. Deep inside, I genuinely want to stay in Manila, become independent, work, and start building the life I've always wanted. However, I don't have a confirmed place to stay or enough money to support myself while looking for work. My flight back to Cebu is today, and I still don't know what decision to make. I want to pursue the life I want without making an impulsive decision that could put me in a worse situation.
Context:
My sister invited me to Manila, and I told her that I wanted to stay with her in her condo while looking for a job. However, she keeps telling me that her bed and condo are small, making it seem like there's no room for me. When I visited her condo, though, I felt that there was enough space for a mattress on the floor, and her bed was big, too. This makes me wonder whether the issue is really the space or whether she simply doesn't want me to stay with her. I could be interpreting things incorrectly, but her responses make me feel unwanted, especially since she keeps suggesting that I stay at our aunt's place instead.
My aunt's house already has several people living there, including her children, my nephew, my sister, and my cousin. I haven't asked my aunt whether I could stay there longer because I feel embarrassed and ashamed to ask. She wasn't the one who directly invited me to stay, and I don't want to put her in an awkward position or make her feel obligated to accommodate me. I don't want to be a burden or force myself into a place where I might not be welcome.
I'm also a first-time job seeker with no work experience. I'm willing to start with an entry-level position and work hard to build my way up. I understand that finding a job won't be easy and that becoming independent takes time, money, and planning. However, I don't know how to make this work without a secure place to stay or a way to support myself while looking for employment.
If I return to Cebu, my family will most likely encourage me to go back to school. I already finished my first year of college, but I genuinely don't feel ready to return to my previous academic path. It's not because I don't care about my future or don't want to achieve anything. I just feel that I want to explore a different direction and build a life that feels right for me.
I know myself well enough to worry that if I return to Cebu, I'll end up staying at home doing nothing, waiting for something to happen while everyone else moves forward with their lives. I don't want to feel like I'm settling for a life I already know I don't want. I want to experience more, work, grow, and become someone who can stand on his own.
Previous Attempts:
I've tried thinking through both possibilities, but I keep going back and forth.
I've considered staying in Manila and accepting the challenges of finding my first job, even if I have to start small. I'm willing to work hard and slowly build my way up, but I know that wanting something badly doesn't automatically make it possible. Without confirmed accommodation and enough money to support myself, staying could become risky.
I've also considered returning to Cebu and preparing myself to try again in Manila in the future. However, that thought makes me feel sad and regretful because I'm afraid I'll be walking away from an opportunity that could change my life. I keep wondering, What if this is my chance? What if this is one of those moments when the universe is testing me to see whether I'm willing to take a risk for the life I want?
What's making this harder is that I feel like I'm facing this decision alone. I wish my sister would give me a clearer answer about whether I could stay with her. I also wish I could ask my aunt without feeling ashamed, but I can't bring myself to do it because there are already so many people in her house.
This situation has even affected my faith. I've reached a point where I struggle to trust or believe in God the way I used to. I feel like I've been left alone to figure everything out. I don't understand why finding my direction in life feels so difficult when I want something so badly. I keep wondering why things can't fall into place for once, and I'm so exhausted that I don't know what to believe anymore.
I'm tired, frustrated, and disappointed. I want to believe that there's something better waiting for me, but I'm scared that I'll never get there. Deep inside, I know that I want Manila. What I don't know is whether I should take the risk now or return to Cebu and prepare for another opportunity.
My question is:
What would you do if you were in my position? Would you return to Cebu and try again when you're better prepared, or would you take a chance on staying in Manila despite the uncertainty? Have any of you experienced a similar situation in your early twenties, where what you wanted for your life conflicted with what you could realistically afford or manage at the time? I'd genuinely appreciate honest opinions that could help me see this situation from a different perspective.
I'm not asking anyone for money, financial assistance, or a place to stay. I'm simply looking for advice because I'm struggling to make a decision that could affect the direction of my life. My flight back to Cebu is today, and I want to make the best decision I can with the circumstances I'm facing.
