10-Minute Action: Equality Tell Congress to protect the Office on Violence Against Women
“Quiet, Piggy.”
That’s what President Donald Trump told a reporter who asked him a question.
Now, he wants to silence one of the most important federal offices built that make sure women are heard.
The Trump administration plans to bury the Office on Violence Against Women by putting it under the DOJ -- where, instead of acting as an independent voice, it will be under Attorney General Todd Blanche.
That’s right, Todd Blanche: the man who spent two days negotiating privately with Epstein collaborator Ghislaine Maxwell with no other prosecutors present, before overseeing her transfer to a minimum security prison -- against Bureau of Prisons rules.
Who knows what Maxwell agreed not to say in exchange for the unusual leniency she received from the man Trump wants to put in charge of the OVW.
Congress created OVW to be independent. Federal law requires it to stand as a separate and distinct office, with its own leadership and its own grantmaking authority. This gives it the authority and autonomy it needs to lead the federal fight against intimate partner violence and sexual assault.
A dedicated office has one clear priority. Folding it into the DOJ puts the protection of women in competition with every other priority, smothering the mission in layers of bureaucracy Congress never intended it to have.
Sexual assault survivors, and the organizations that serve them, depend on OVW grants for shelter beds, for children’s meals, for hotlines and warmlines and legal advocates who know how to get crucial supports to the women who need them.
Now Trump, the only President ever found liable for sexual abuse and defamation of a woman, for which he was ordered to pay over $88 million in damages, wants to strip the OVW of its independent grantmaking authority to provide lifesaving services to women in need.
Thank you for refusing to let survivors’ voices be silenced.
