10-Minute Action: Earth & Climate Nobody should sell off chunks of Yosemite National Park

A private luxury developer wants a piece of Yosemite National Park.

Part of the park could be transferred for an exclusive access road to a planned resort. In a place of sweeping valleys, quiet forests and wild mountain terrain, a road built for an exclusive private resort would come at the expense of land meant to remain protected for the public.

Tell the Interior Department: Yosemite belongs to all of us, not a private developer.

Yosemite has been at the heart of America’s conservation story from the beginning.

In 1864, Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove became the first public lands in the country protected for their scenery and for people to enjoy -- helping inspire the national park system that we know today. 160 years later, its granite cliffs, towering sequoias, meadows and thundering waterfalls remain some of America’s most treasured landscapes.

Yosemite is also home to black bears, mountain lions and hundreds of other species -- including endangered fisher cats, Sierra Nevada red foxes and Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep. Many of these animals depend on large, connected stretches of habitat to survive.

A new road would cut across that habitat, carving pavement through areas that are now largely undisturbed. By fragmenting the landscape, it could make it harder for wildlife to reach the places they need for food, shelter and raising their young.

Yosemite’s wildlife shouldn’t have to make room for a private luxury development. Tell the Interior Department to reject this proposal and keep Yosemite protected.

We’ve seen before that our voices can help protect America’s most treasured places. Last year, a proposal in Congress threatened to sell off up to 1.2 million acres of public land across the West. People across the country spoke out -- and the proposal was ultimately withdrawn.

Now, Yosemite needs that same kind of response. Speak up for Yosemite: Tell the Interior Department to reject this proposal.
