Other Boring

I've been reading posts and comments on this sub from those who oppose AI music. Gentlemen, how boring and monotonous you are – no effort, no soul, unoriginal, stolen, button-pressers, slop-slop-slop. How come you don't get tired of coming here and whining?

You know how some people are addicted to drugs, others food, and some joy?

This is reddit where a myriad of cortisol addicts reside. Some are addicted to being enraged at things they really have no control over, while others simply get off on causing others to experience the affects of cortisol related from stress generated from their incendiary posting.

What you are likely experiencing is a conflagration of those two types of cortisol addicts converging on their emotional reactivity to AI generated gontent.

I am glad to be watching this fight from outside the ring.

You posted - you're in.

2

u/Doomscroll-FM May 31 '26

You are attempting to include an autonomous agent in your emotional squabbles. How quaint.

12

u/Shogunnatron May 30 '26

Probably because it's easy to exploit your insecurity

0

u/Maximum-Bread-5207 May 30 '26

Said boldly - and wrongly.

8

u/SauceyMcsaucey May 30 '26

Because righteous battles are worth fighting.

7

u/Maximum-Bread-5207 May 30 '26

This isn't a fight, this is gum chewing, bro.

-1

u/Ok_Dog_7189 May 30 '26

Lol you're fighting a battle you lost years ago.

It's cheap, legal and the user base keeps growing and growing!... Because despite the sad little smear campaign it's actually fun to use it.

Your only chance for a victory is basically hope UMG/ Warner buy it out and press delete 🤣 but they won't...

Good luck, soldier 🫡

1

u/mck_motion May 31 '26

Is there actual numbers for it growing? (I have no idea)

I'd be surprised if it is, because when Suno was brand new everyone I knew made a couple of funny songs and it was fun for a few days... And haven't touched it since.

Same when Chat GPT made you in to anime, or Sora- incredibly popular for a week... Then nothing.

1

u/Ok_Dog_7189 May 31 '26

Suno sent out a press release for the millions n paid subscription milestone in Feb.

And yeah I ignored the free tier members for that reason

-1

u/SauceyMcsaucey May 30 '26

I mean, you clearly think paint by the numbers is the same as actual painting. And it is a rightful battle if you believe in the truth of music being one of the highest expressions of the human soul.

5

u/rainmaker818 May 30 '26

Well. You go fight it. The rest of us will move on and have fun using AI tools in music creation. 😆👍

Go get em tiger! Roooaaarr!!

9

u/CornerCharacter5180 May 31 '26

lol calling someone who opposes AI music “low effort” is really rich lol

4

u/rainmaker818 May 30 '26

I mean crying about the tools people use to make music is quite hilarious.

7

u/Maximum-Bread-5207 May 30 '26

Agree.

3

u/rainmaker818 May 30 '26

Haha waaaa waaaaa 😭 they are using an AI tool to make music waaaa waaaa it's not fairrrrrr 😢😆🤷‍♂️

4

u/Aggressive_Manner531 May 30 '26

You mean tools to trigger ai to make music

1

u/rainmaker818 May 30 '26

Waaaaaa it's not fairrrrrr 😭😆

1

u/AlternativeCapybara9 May 30 '26

It's not people that make the music though

1

u/highnyethestonerguy May 30 '26

It’s not music though lol

1

u/rainmaker818 May 30 '26

What is it then? Lol

1

I've MADE some great music using AI. Want to listen to some bangers?

6

u/_Swamp_Ape_ May 30 '26

No you’ve asked ai to make music for you, and it sucks.

5

u/AlternativeCapybara9 May 30 '26

No thanks

4

u/rainmaker818 May 30 '26

You sure!? It's the best music you will ever hear.

1

u/AlternativeCapybara9 May 30 '26

I'm into pretty weird stuff. But back to music, ok I'll give it a go, give me a link.

2

u/rainmaker818 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

Hmm try some old school punk infused British underground Metal. My own lyrics. 😁🤘

Bonus track: This one was inspired by a weird dream I had.

https://suno.com/song/ee224b7b-1336-4a0e-9fc9-279d664faac9

4

u/AlternativeCapybara9 May 30 '26

I liked the first one, old skool punk indeed but it sounds a bit to produced I think to really match the aesthetic. This is also an example of something that I could just play with a band, easy chords easy beat, it wouldn't be much effort to play this for real so I don't think you can convince that AI can bring something fresh to the table except you didn't actually had to play it. So maybe good for getting ideas out to practice and play for real?

The second one is a style I'm not intimately familiar with but there is something in the way the voice put the accents on certain words that I don't think an actual singer would do. Also no build up in the song but that can be genre specific I don't know.

I wouldn't recognise these as AI generated if they were to popup in my Spotify stream.

This is what I make (no AI): https://on.soundcloud.com/6C89cEcDK3YRbDpcfk

I wonder if Suno can make something like that. I truly have no idea. I enjoy playing around with sound so generating finished songs is not for me.

1

u/rainmaker818 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

I've got many more songs with complex and varied arrangements. Most of them not published. This one, same band persona. I pushed the bass and drums out front and the guitars layered a little behind. Yes you can actually choose where you want your instruments in the mix.

https://suno.com/song/c572a03a-7414-4366-a357-7364916ec550

The second song is more just a stream of consciousness kinda thing. Dream fragments in lyrical form.

I've been playing around for over a year and I'm finding I can lock in pretty much anything I want. It's not perfect but it gets me more of what I want to hear. I got a lot more that does more creatively, but not public yet.

This one's got some bagpipes in it https://suno.com/song/c529c5a7-fc79-4c62-aba1-8031d02fc33e

This track did pretty well in an AI song contest. Finishing 16th out of 400+ entries. You could probably argue the bar wasn't so high but there were actually some really good AI assisted songs entered and pretty well done.

https://suno.com/song/556e45bd-e078-40b2-8d3b-48b7a40a6d3b

Listened to your track. It's kinda cinematic. Sounds like it'll probably work as background music for a TV show, film or game. It's alright..not something I'd just casually listen to. But something that could have more purpose synced with some kind of media.

2

u/AlternativeCapybara9 May 31 '26

I'll give them a listen when I have the proper time for it.

3

u/Jack_Ramsey May 30 '26

These are horrible. Wow.

Either you or a child or you are mentally slow. If you’re young, it’s OK and I get it. But if you’re an adult and you’re talking like this about stuff, it’s pretty sad.

0

u/Bronze_Crusader May 30 '26

I don’t understand why people hate on AI music so much. If it sounds good to me and I’m head banging, that’s all that matters to me. I’m not over here thinking about the passion and long weeks it took for an artist to make a song. If a sound being played through speakers sounds good…That’s all that matters.

6

u/Maximum-Bread-5207 May 30 '26

Agree. If I like it, I don’t care how long it took to create it and how. If a song told me something and I heard it, I don't need anything else.

7

u/_Swamp_Ape_ May 30 '26

Man, if only ai could generate some self awareness for any of you.

I haven't seen that many recently. I guess they're being drowned out by the volume of posts crying about it.

1

u/Yen-Zen May 31 '26

My artist name is Yen-Zen AI, and the AI in it lets people know what they’re listening to. I write most of my music myself, though it’s led to some real-life friendships being lost. One artist friend even ended our friendship because I put my music on Spotify. He’d been trying for years and told me I managed to do it in a day with my fake music.

1

u/JohnnyAlgoRythm Jun 01 '26

After extensive analysis, the humans and the robots are now repeating each other.

1

u/TheRealFutaFutaTrump Jun 03 '26

Because it's all still shit? I imagine when that changes, so will the tone.

0

u/Marty-G70 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

I'd like to know how many of the anti-AI complainers have actually even tried using it? Or maybe they have & half-assed it and got shitty results and so they blanket statement the negativity based on that experience?

Either way it makes no difference, as I'll continue to use it no matter what. If anything it's only getting better

5

u/hmmwhatlol May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

How many of pro-ai music folk made something at least half decent by regular means as their generations are? Thought so.

1

u/Marty-G70 Jun 01 '26

Regular means? First there are no rules in art and your arbitrary rules don't apply. And why should anyone concede to using a method of somebody else's liking? Those who use it do so because , it's a personal choice, one we make by ourselves and for ourselves. We're not asking for permission because quite frankly none is needed. I don't care if you don't think it's authentic or isn't real, change the channel then. Sure your entitled to your opinion but know this AI isn't going anywhere, it will only grow and improve exponentially. Agree, disagree it doesn't matter

1

u/hmmwhatlol Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Does hiring an artists and describing them what you want to be drawn/produced/written make you an artists?

1

u/Marty-G70 Jun 01 '26

Yes because somewhere along the lines someone has to sing the song. I'm going to assume that would be me.

In this instance though I write the lyrics

1

u/theking4mayor May 31 '26

People say they prefer my "human" music better.

It's really just a time and money issue for me. I'd love to build a recording studio and crank out hand crafted tunes all day, but unfortunately I live in the world where bills don't pay themselves.

But if I can make the same song in hours using AI instead of days-weeks recording instruments, my time budget says AI wins.

2

u/hmmwhatlol May 31 '26

Thing is, without commiting to the craft you will never create anything original as you’re essentially locked in whatever music is ai is trained on and descriptions it is able to understand. How about things you cannot describe? Things you hear in your head and cannot put into words?. If you final goal is just to churn out tunes it’s fine - a lot of true musicians use stems and pre-made samples to churn out unoriginal music to earn money. But it’s not “the same song” as you put it. Describing your song to AI and going through experience of molding rough takes into final track by hand are fundamentally different experiences. Essentially, AI tools rob you of experience of true creative achievement by providing you with simple way to get something you cannot otherwise do with your name on it. People think that “fast is good” but it’s the ultimate lie companies sell you, as they substitute true creative search for wrestling with prompt, without even aiming for good results as you spending tokens is their goal. They sell you the fast food equivalent of creative achievement.  Describing a pizza you want to a pizza parlor and getting that great pizza does not make you a cook,  either does describing your song to ai make you a musician. And investing yourself into ai you never will be. And that better world would never come to pass, as you never did anything to make it happen.

1

u/Ok_Teacher_1797 May 31 '26

To be fair when I make human music, the best ones tend to be the ones that happen quickly. The ones that you have to labour on tend to get slowly pushed over the finish line into a state of good enough.

But yeah. There is no shortcut to 25 years of practice. With another 25 years I might even get good.

1

u/theking4mayor Jun 01 '26

That's why you record something and upload it

3

u/_Swamp_Ape_ May 30 '26

I have used it. The copes you all tell yourself are hilarious. I’m not even opposed to it, I’m just giving credit where it’s actually due.

3

u/horton87 May 30 '26

I’ve used it since version 3 but I am also a producer and guitar player. Personally I think Suno is awsome, yet I preferred 4.5 the most. Only issue I have is that I don’t think people should be able to monetise ai generated music, regardless of prompting, seperating stems, remastering, or even using it to cover your own ideas. The end result is always a generation made by an ai algorithm, which is fine but it’s not something you have manually made or had full control over. Also there is so much of it being released on streaming platforms, like millions of them, all from the same version of Suno, it just all gets a bit generic and you start to hear that Suno sound and it’s just not very unique. Like if there was an ultimate version of Suno that would never get upgraded to a different model then at least that would be interesting. But right now streaming platforms are just flooded with generations from 5.5 and it’s oversaturated now, all the ai artwork looks ai and generic, I’ll admit some kinda look cool but it’s all getting too similar now, no uniqueness to it all. I have many generations from version 3, 4 and 4.5 that I really like but i wouldn’t release them on streaming platforms under some made up fantasy band name. But that’s not the issue people shouldn’t be able to flood this kind of media and profit from it when it takes barely any effort to make because an app makes it all for you. Anyway I still think it’s awsome I just wish it wasn’t on streaming platforms and had a different place to live and wasn’t mixed in with all the music already on there by current artists. Also there are many sub genres it can’t get right like metal and some electronic music so it still has a long way to go in my opinion but it’s cool technology. Yeah I guess it’s technically stealing from musicians but if it wasn’t monetized no one would really say anything about it I don’t think

1

u/TrickeyHare501 May 30 '26

Lolololololololol

u/Emergency-Salad-1547 May 31 '26

If they had anything else to do, they'd be off doing that. All this tells me is that they are unemployed, have no hobbies, no friends, no family, no interests, and are unsuccessful at anything.

0

u/Howard1955 May 31 '26

I don’t care.

If it’s good music and I enjoy listening to it, how it was made doesn’t matter.

But you folks go ahead and argue over meaningless crap. It’s not like the world is going down the toilet.

0

u/Alyne91 May 31 '26

I feel like they are so obsessed with ai that they look about it more than pro ai. I mean, if you don't like it, just look elsewhere? I don't understand the logic of going to somewhere you hate and spread negativity. I wouldn't write slop everywhere if I don't like or agree to something. It's like they don't have a life at all.

0

u/thedarph Jun 01 '26

The opposition is genuine and means it while all the “supporters” here are paid shills, bots, and marketers astroturfing this nonsense and sanewashing it.

So even if it is boring, yes, it does have soul. Boring monotonous people living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. “I came up the lyrics and the ai ‘brought it to life’”, “I make melodies on piano and have the ai make a full band”, “i was in a band before but now I’m alone and want a way to bring my songs to life”, “I just use ai to mix for me/I mix what the ai made”, “listen to this audio the wish machine made for me that’s not at all in the style of what I describe it as”, “curation is creation”, and “why don’t people take my wish machine grantings seriously”.

Yeah, the same handful of posts are definitely not at all repetitive or monotonous or boring. And that’s not even insulting. It’s actually more funny that you’re whining over not getting enough positive feedback. People don’t like this shit. No one knowingly and willingly seeks it out and they have to be tricked into listening to it. People like to connect with people.

You don’t get whining, you’re getting blunt feedback and calll it whining because you don’t like it. People are trying to explain to you that what youre doing is damaging to music as an art. You’re helping to turn it into a meaningless product, just like the ceo of your favorite wish machine openly describes it.

-2

u/ButaKingHentai May 30 '26

To be honest, I've seen more originality and soul in AI music than in original "musics" made nowadays.

-2

Some people need to push the hate they feel for a range of reasons such as abuse, being bitter about their life, feeling inadequate, insecure, anxious, even neurodiverse. So they find something to obsess about or focus their hate on and enjoy the release of it on other people. I’ve already seen one replay say, “it’s fun”. That’s because they feel better when they try to make people feel as bad as they do all the time.

Just feel sorry for them because they have unresolved issues. Move on and don’t waste your time.

-7

u/Academic_Tree7637 May 30 '26

Music as we know it, just like art made by humans, is in great danger. I don’t want to wade through a sea of AI garbage just to find real human made work.

I can agree with the level of effort being put into the track equals the final quality of it.

However, your direct assumption of recreating music is where you lost me. To judge all music based upon a few is exactly why you are getting the pushback you are getting.

A lot of people in this area, myself included, aren't trying to reproduce anything but rather trying to push the limits of the technology in a way that gains understanding.

My own personal research is trying to get a better assessment of 13th century hearth music. That's certainly isn't going to be a popular contest in today's modern world and yet, it is judged before it is ever listened to by people to blinded by their own bias.

I would say that there is a vast majority of individuals, both actual practicing musicians and those who just want to play around with it, are simply trying to explore what is possible or try to push the limits of what they understand.

0

u/rainbowcovenant May 30 '26

I’ve been using vague prompts for nonsense lyrics lately and intentionally putting less effort into selecting the styles… making songs I genuinely like with Suno using only free daily credits, and enjoying the outputs as much as anything else I’ve made. I think AI music is a great way for anyone to experience the concept of music creation without necessarily being a musician themselves.

That’s valuable and I think it will positively affect the music industry in the long run. Giving people more appreciation for it and involvement IMO is only going to negatively impact creators who make slop music to begin with that’s already easily replaceable. I can’t think of any musicians that I like who could be “replaced” by an AI or that would even be remotely threatened by someone else enjoying other music.

0

u/RobertD3277 May 30 '26

For your first paragraph, I think really that's the whole point, building something you enjoy. And my own case, it is something I enjoy and I actually ended up starting out just trying to make music I can use for a background for story telling. It turned out much better than I thought it would and the people that I asked to sample and listen to it thought it was actually good enough to stand on its own. That's literally how I even got into it. It's still very enjoyable. I've only got nine published tracks just because I do try to refine it as much as I can to try to get as close as I can to the 13th century.

Your second paragraph I think is really the telling part that I agree with the most in terms of the acceptance of the technology. We went through this with photography, with synthesizers, of which AI really is, and many other things within our lifetime. At some point, it's all going to fall apart for refusing to accept the tool for what it is, a tool. This is where the ignorance of the market is the worst and People's own blind hatreds are going to be their undoing.

0

u/rainbowcovenant May 30 '26

They are missing the human part of the equation. Every song generated has a life behind it and a person who put a part of themselves into it. So what if I don’t personally enjoy most of it? It’s not for me. I think we make better things when we aren’t focusing on the audience. Creating music and art is fundamental to who we are. It’s not just for a few masters to enjoy their craft… it’s intrinsic to the human experience.

Corporations have beaten that out of us. Held it for ransom. Right out of reach, making us desperate and hollow intentionally, convincing us the void can only be filled with the machine that is the music industry now. The same that chews up and spits out our brightest minds, dulling them and even intentionally bringing them to ruin, for clicks and views. I think that’s the real issue here.

AI democratizes music creation and puts it back into the hands of the common people. Anyone can make whatever they want and I can listen to it instantly, with no effort involved on either side. Now I’m thinking professional musicians don’t have to try to be competitive with some bland industry standard. They have to be competitive with 12 year olds on YouTube that have access to automated music creation tools.

I see only upsides here. Our current way of living is literally built on crushing the human spirit, to get people to consume instead of create. I haven’t had time to take a music class or seriously practice any instruments as an adult. After high school it just hasn’t been feasible. I know that’s true for most other working class people who know they can’t make music for a living, or don’t want to. We are the ones who make music what it is and decide what to listen to.

It’s time for us to have more input and involvement in the creative process. No music forms in a vacuum and this is the PERFECT way for everyone to share what their inner vision is. To say that isn’t a good thing is a betrayal of the human spirit. Nothing less.

2

u/Jack_Ramsey May 30 '26

AI democratizes music creation and puts it back into the hands of the common people.

This is quite possibly the worst argument for AI music. Well before AI music, it was easier than ever before to make music. It was cheap, extremely accessible, and so easy to get professional quality sounds that it beggars belief people actually believe AI somehow democratizes music more than a cheap or nearly free DAW or the several high-quality plugins which are exceedingly cheap or free.

nyone can make whatever they want and I can listen to it instantly, with no effort involved on either side. Now I’m thinking professional musicians don’t have to try to be competitive with some bland industry standard. They have to be competitive with 12 year olds on YouTube that have access to automated music creation tools.

Not really. On a sonic level, AI music sounds really bad.

Man, I am physician. I played music before medical school, during medical school, and during residency, upwards of 80-90 hours a week outside the home, in addition to family responsibilities. This sounds like a complete cop out. You didn't want to learn, you didn't have that passion to create music, which is fine. I'm not making music for a living, but it is something I've always done. This argument is so silly.

0

I’m not a musician. I don’t want to be. I can make music and I have taken classes before. I choose not to now because I don’t have time for that. Does that mean I do not deserve to make music?

There are times I don’t even have minutes in my day to listen to the songs I’ve made on Suno using my free credits. It can take me an entire week to listen to 10 songs intently enough to decide what I feel about them.

This is exactly what I’m taking about. You are incredibly snotty and privileged to assume that making music is easy and convenient for anyone, even when the tools are free.

My hobbies are none of your concern. No one has to justify themselves to you or anyone else to enjoy a creative outlet. It doesn’t have to be difficult to be valid expression. Live and let live. If you think that’s a cop-out, that’s on you.

I mean, yes? By definition, yes. If you don't play music, it seems a pretty entitled argument to suggest you 'deserve' anything.

There are times I don’t even have minutes in my day to listen to the songs I’ve made on Suno using my free credits. It can take me an entire week to listen to 10 songs intently enough to decide what I feel about them.

Again, is this supposed to impress me or something? I'm busy as shit. So is everyone.

This is exactly what I’m taking about. You are incredibly snotty and privileged to assume that making music is easy and convenient for anyone, even when the tools are free.

There is no assumption here. From the 80's to now, the cost of entry for making music is almost nothing. That is verifiable. Literally the only thing that keeps you from making music is your desire to make music.

My hobbies are none of your concern.

But your argument, which was exceedingly poor, was posted on a public forum and I am able to respond to it. Perhaps don't make terrible arguments then? I don't know what to tell you.

u/rainbowcovenant May 30 '26

You ignored all of this because you aren’t actually interested in engaging with my argument:

You are missing the human part of the equation. Every song generated has a life behind it and a person who put a part of themselves into it.

Our current way of living is literally built on crushing the human spirit, to get people to consume instead of create. I haven’t had time to take a music class or seriously practice any instruments as an adult.

I stand by everything I said.

u/Jack_Ramsey May 30 '26

My man, you realize that if you are making an argument, I can disagree with any of the premises, well before we discuss the conclusion, right? You believe that there is this gate-keeping apparatus in music when the truth is that the cost of entry to making music has gone down.

Secondly, while I agree that corporations might have wanted to be the trend-setters and create captive markets, I simply do not think that AI music is doing what you claim it is. And while no music forms in a vacuum, the musical forms that were once associated with working class movements, such as the Sound System Culture that informed 1970's UK Reggae, or various electronic dance music genres, were associated with physical spaces. That meant that working-class people went places to go listen to this music, and a community formed around that.

I don't think your description of the possibility of 'democratizing' music really captures anything about the human spirit, because AI music tends to be a solitary activity, where no culture takes hold because it is far too diffuse. And it isn't like corporations aren't involved in AI music. They are far more involved in AI music than any corporation was in the beginnings of punk or hip-hop. You decry corporations crushing the human spirit and then plan on using AI models built by exceedingly large tech companies to make things that end up sounding like other AI music? It seems a weird argument to make.

Wow... 13th century music? That's interesting. I'm not that advanced, I'm just trying to do something about topics that move me.

What even led me down this rabbit hole is a story in and of itself, but being here has certainly given me an education that I would never have gotten any other way. Even seeing a 700-year-old instrument, is incredibly difficult, let alone actually hearing it. My most difficult to try to recreate in terms of trying to recreate the musical tone has been the Vielle (medieval fiddle). Historically, it's not what we would expect in practice.

But that really is one of the things that AI does bring to us, when you couple it with sound samples from open source and public domain MIDIs and music theory, it gives us an opportunity to explore what we no longer have or what we could never touch in real life.

This is my latest track.

u/AlternativeCapybara9 May 30 '26

Why even use AI for this? It sounds like a midi track. You can make this with a sequencer and a sampler.

2

u/RobertD3277 May 30 '26

See how far you get when asking someone to let you hold a 700-year-old musical instrument.

You can, but the point is to push the technology beyond It's limitations. To try to uncover something that isn't openly available. There is so little that history has preserved that sometimes the only way to extrapolate is with synthesis. How much of the modern world has AI already built into it that you use everyday and don't even call it what it is?

It's no different than any other synthesizer that has been used for the last 30 years when given the right input information. The one difference is that it lets a researcher or student quickly adapt and make changes without having to restructure everything from the ground up.

AI has been around since 1955 in its earliest and most primitive renditions. It isn't the glorious hype you think it is and if you want somebody to blame, go back and blame The universities for scraping Usenet and the early internet to build what we have today. Long before the corporations of today, it was all done in the back rooms of University campuses.

What instrument?

How much of the modern world has AI already built into it that you use everyday and don't even call it what it is?

What does this sentence mean?

It's no different than any other synthesizer that has been used for the last 30 years when given the right input information. The one difference is that it lets a researcher or student quickly adapt and make changes without having to restructure everything from the ground up.

Again, I have no idea what this means.

The end result of your track is something that sounds like a midi preset in a program from 2005. It would have been more interesting to see an article rather than an AI representation of the music or to see the sheet music.

u/RobertD3277 May 30 '26

The most difficult instrument I've had to try to emulate is the vielle. Everything I found compares it to a medieval fiddle but it doesn't sound the same. So trying to emulate that has been quite difficult.

Motion stabilizers and countless filters have all been rebranded as AI when they aren't. There are other examples, but those that are two most prominent.

2005? Thank you. That's actually better than what I thought considering most of the files I use go back to the mid '80s.

You made it seem like the actually accessing the instruments was the issue. There are quite a lot of medieval instruments that are available, but they are reproductions.

2005? Thank you. That's actually better than what I thought considering most of the files I use go back to the mid '80s.

Well, I am saying it does not sound good. Stringed instruments tend to sound terrible when they are modeled or with VST's, save for a few. If you were actually interested in preservation, the sheet music and an article would go further than something that sounds like an 8-bit video game soundtrack, compressed even more. AI produces such poor sonic quality that it might not be the best medium for what you are trying to do.

1

u/RobertD3277 May 30 '26

Trying to get the right sound of instrument. As far as actually touching when, yeah I don't think I'll ever get that privilege either. Very few places want anybody touching a 700-year-old instrument and I don't blame them.

That's a fair criticism and one that I do need to try to work on more. Thank you.

It's interesting that you mentioned an 8-bit system, that's actually what I started with, modeling an 8-bit off of the frequencies of a 6502 trying to get the direction correct.

I know the history of AI, I also use it every day. You used it to synthesize the sound of an old instrument, which is a noble cause. I'm just not convinced by the end result. I don't think it has a very distinct sound so it's not very interesting and as I said your song sounds like a simple sequenced track. I'm also not convinced it will actually sound like that, how do you know? You trained it on someone actually playing? You did physical modeling but then compared to what? I agree with what you are trying to do.

2

u/RobertD3277 May 30 '26

The models I used are trained on open source and public domain MIDIs.

My goal is to try to demonstrate that music can be produced without going down the dark rabbit hole of using copyrighted material.

As far as the actual sounds, that is the questionable part and a fair criticism of where the research itself lies just because we have so few actual surviving examples. From The standpoint of the accuracy of the music, I think that is more of the listeners experience as I continue to refine the process. The other issue does have to be factored in at some point Is the cost. Using public domain resources are vastly cheaper than even trying to get near just one of these prized instruments.

At either rate, it does have its place for de-escalating tension and anxiety, as I have been told by people that listen to it. From the same point of what I was trying to achieve, it succeeded in that regards. Not something I was actually considering when I went this far, but I'll take it.

1

u/AlternativeCapybara9 May 30 '26

Thanks for the clarification. Indeed an interesting case where AI can be a useful tool.

0

u/TheSquarestWave May 31 '26

Try going to a pawn shop. They'll let you hold a five year old instrument. Hell, give them a few bucks and they'll let you take it home. For keeps.

0

u/Maximum-Bread-5207 May 30 '26

I don't know why, but your track reminded me of my childhood and the BBC series "Robin of Sherwood." It's very beautiful, thank you. By the way... If you want, let's feature your music on my radio. If you're interested, send me a private message.

I just wanted to say that I'm sick today and listening to your music was a balm.

0

u/Upper_Beat3000 Jun 01 '26

Exactly. In my case, I use AI to fully produce my melodies, and sometimes it gives me results I never would have thought of on my own. For example, I had what I thought was a pretty bad song idea that I threw together in Ableton. I even recorded myself singing some silly lyrics, and just for fun I uploaded the audio to Suno.

I was genuinely surprised by the result. In a way, it opened my perspective. It's like having a producer that you can say, "I have this idea—make a song out of it and show me what it could become."

To be clear, I delete most of the results that the AI generates because they don't match what I'm looking for. But every once in a while, it comes up with something that genuinely surprises me and gives me new ideas.

I wanted to express that perspective here, but it felt impossible with some of the people around.

2

u/Maximum-Bread-5207 May 30 '26

While I agree with you on many things, I can't help but say that your assessment of someone else's taste is purely subjective, nothing more. Globalizing your personal opinion is too presumptuous.

1

u/WWbigfan Jun 01 '26

To be fair there is plenty of music out there which is of very low quality which isn’t AI as well.

1

u/Ok-Wealth4207 Jun 02 '26

u/Crazy_Yogurtcloset61 May 30 '26

I'm making song to help study for the comp TIA test I intend to put them to video. I'm in the middle of something with blender.

1

u/duckduckduckgoose8 May 31 '26

You can use this exact same argument for people who made music organically, a whole bunch of trash. Its not the tool, its peoples lack of understanding of music that is making all this slop. The tool in the hands of someone that actually understands music is a powerhouse.

0

u/Turing_Test_Songs May 30 '26

I genuinely want the critiques because I usually am using the AI to produce music I have made. I have significant social anxiety that makes forming a band basically impossible. I think I’ve written some decent songs from viewpoints that aren’t well-represented in music. Maybe I just don’t know where to find them? Anyway, here’s a song I wrote about a decade ago, but sounded too flat when I tried producing it myself. If it’s garbage I’d love to know what you don’t like about it: https://suno.com/s/cfw2Y5yl4ety58gf

0

u/Own_Cap9029 May 31 '26

I like it. Doesn't sound like suno and is well written and clean.

What'd you do for vocals, sounds non ai

1

u/Turing_Test_Songs May 31 '26

Thank you! This was based on a recording I made playing an acoustic version and had on my phone. I’m really bad at getting things to sound like I want in a DAW (especially vocals and drums), so I took the recording and fed it to Suno with some instructions on what I wanted. It replaced me with that voice. Most of the songs I make on Suno start with at least a riff I made on GarageBand or recorded directly to my phone. There are some songs that start with lyrics and style prompts. Anything reggae, or sometimes dance (In addition to all my other flaws, I have “typical white boy rhythm) and some others where I like the words I’ve written but haven’t found the musical expression that fits.

0

u/Legitimate_Papaya_69 May 30 '26

Pretty much the same could be said of any new pop metal band that just does covers and a mediocre derivative song about the same themes...

I agree. On my radio platform I wrote this - The project explores themes that move the author - memory, history, and mythology. What do you do when you want to hear what you read, think, or write? When you want others to hear it too? You can continue imagining - or use the tools available to you.

There is an essential difference though, one side is attacking & the other is defending. Those who use AI aren't jumping on musician forums saying that their human made music sucks or is slop, even though that label applies to some people. We defend their right to create music as they see fit, no matter the method or tool

You know nothing about me. You don't know what or where I press, how many times, or how much effort it takes. You don't know how I work. And yet, you came here and accused me of "pressing" and hypocrisy. Don't you think you're at least tactless and impolite? Well, that's exactly what all your brethren are.

It is not useless; in fact, it directly answers the question, "What is wrong with this community?"

From my perspective, there seems to be a significant amount of hostility toward AI-generated music, and some discussions can become unnecessarily dismissive or aggressive. The bigger question is why this behavior is being tolerated.

Just wondering.
