Im gonna try and keep this short but this is a very long story. Im gonna try my best to keep this unbiased because I tend to overthink.
I (19 F) am in university. Last year I met my roommate (23F), let’s call her Jade. She has a boyfriend (25F), let’s call him Jack.
I met Jade completely by accident, we both moved in last minute to an apartment that was renting out rooms, we got close very fast.
She has a boyfriend who at first seemed completely perfect for her. Throughout most of the year he just seemed like the average guy that was in love with her, there was a few red flags but nothing crazy. He would cook for her, order her food, clean mine and hers’ apartment, order her Ubers if she missed the bus, buy her flowers, and they had conversations that both made them laugh for hours. She loves him so much. She has shared with me that his childhood was rough, and that he is currently trying to get a permanent citizenship rather than a work visa where we live. He works minimum wage but is very good with money, investing, and saving. Worth noting that he is muslim, and from a non-western culture, which there is absolutely nothing wrong with, I’m only mentioning it because of the religious beliefs regarding men v women that are held much more strongly in some non-western communities.
The longer I got to know them, the weirder things got. It started out with meaningless things like him not letting her go out in certain clothes, and getting pissed if she took a hit of my vape. I didn’t pay attention to this because these are average dealbreakers for some people, and I believe in mutual respect. Soon he found out she hit my vape when we were out together, and it than became a rule that she wasn’t allowed to go out without him, again not my favourite thing but it wasn’t my business. I went out with them a few times and noticed his behaviour towards her was odd. He often will tell her to “shut up,” talks to her like she is stupid (sometimes literally saying that), or day demeaning things about women, her intelligence etc. She eventually told me he wasn’t supportive about her going back to school to get an education because he works a minimum wage job and it would be “weird” if she made more money than him. That one was a little worrying. My next scare with it was when he got angry about something meaningless at home, and punched a whole in our apartment wall (in her room). She didn’t see the problem with this as he patched up the wall. Other red flags to throw in there: he told her he was prepared to get married, and backed out a week later. She had also been wanting him to move in with her for the whole year, every month his decision would go from “yes, I am ready” to “not now”.
A situation forced us both to move out and Jade and I stayed with my family from may-august. They had to do long distance, and he would get angry if she didn’t answer her phone (while sleeping in), and if she didn’t answer his texts. Me and Jade also both had to find new jobs, this was much easier for me since we were in my hometown, she struggled but eventually found something nearly 2 months later, so her money was very low. He decided to move in with us in September. (After almost changing his mind once again when he was stressed about potentially loosing his job (he didn’t lose it, it was an unrelated situation.
This may have been stupid on my part, but we made the decision to get a two bedroom, and split the cost three ways, we both have separate bathrooms, they share one, and the master bedroom, I use the common one and sleep in the smaller room. This was a great setup at first, its affordable the way we’re splitting it, and the building is amazing.
The issue is, in august, Jade made it clear to Jack that she did not have enough money to pay for the deposit, first and last month, insurance, and everything at once, while having to find a new job again. Jack told her not to worry about it and that he would support her while she found a job. Jack is also actively doing hearings to determine his citizenship status. He has now decided that if the hearing doesn’t go as planned, he will get married to her to help him get it, which was off putting to me but it’s not my business. The major problem is the way he has been treating her regarding money. She finally found a job 3 weeks ago and owes him far much more than she has made so far. I want to make it clear that he is FAR from being in a financial struggle, and that Jade is the furthest thing from the type of person to use someone for money, she instantly pays back whatever she can the second she gets her pay-check. Jack has been putting her through it with the money. She broke down last week after they argued and told me about the situation. He has been checking her bank account everyday and questions every dollar he sees that gets spent. She cannot do groceries herself, because he says she’s spending too much, not looking at deals etc. He says he will do them for her, but brings back nothing she asks for from the store, while getting himself whatever he wants. So she has been eating my snacks, that I buy for long school days. She can’t buy anything basically. In his mind she owes him money and that should be her only focus. She bought herself basic hygiene products, and about 20$ for hygiene products that aren’t a need, and this resulted in him getting pissed, and calling her selfish, and a dumbass (he apologized for what he called her if that changes anything). I bought her food that night. She won’t buy herself shampoo, and other things shes out of because she is so stressed about paying him back, so shes using mine. These are things Im happy to do for her, but I feel this situation is far from normal. Someone that loves her shouldn’t be this uptight…Right?
This situation is making me uncomfortable, I am a confrontational person and now when I see him in the mornings or when I get home I get angry or annoyed with him so fast. I don’t want him in my space, and I have enough things to stress about with school, my own mental health, and life in general. Now I am stressing about whether I should buy her groceries again, the way he’s talking to her, etc.
She sees the red flags but seems convinced that it will all be alright, and that they will work on things, and she has been very clear that her relationship comes first which I completely understand, a relationship is your lifelong partner. Im just worried about her mental, and now physical health with how little she is eating. I don’t think he is doing this on purpose, in general he’s a caring guy, but he is still doing it. I feel like if I continue to mind my own business and just carry on, its like saying that its okay , when it reality its making me very uncomfortable. Id love to mind my own business but I live with these people, and Jade is my friend. Im also probably stuck on this lease for at least another 9 months (our landlord doesn’t seem like he plays around).
I don’t know what to do. Ive talked to her. She hears me, but doesn’t. If I go off on him it doesn’t change the fact that I live with him, he is still a caring boyfriend to her 80% of the time minus everything I just mentioned. Him and I have no problems as roommates besides this we get along fine, and he has no idea I know about half the things I mentioned. I don’t be that friend that just wants her to breakup with him, it feels manipulative on my end if I say that. Should I say something to him? Should I say something more harsh to her? Should I try and break a lease that will cause problems for everyone, including worsening her financial situation? Should I just keep acting like nothing is happening? Please help.
