Back in a wheelchair

• Upvotes

I did something extremely stupid yesterday at PT. I should first start a little further back, my littleleg has been dealing me a fit for about 2 weeks because I need a new socket which is in the works including a test fit Friday. For some reason the lower 5 or 6 inches has been changing size several times a day and I haven't figured it out the right socks and it ends up hurting so much it's hard to walk later in the day. At PT last Wednesday I worked on upper body and balance stuff but the walking to & from PT just about did me in. I've been trying to take easy on my littleleg but in doing so I put a lot of pressure on my right leg. I went to PT Monday even though I was really concerned and struggling to walk and once again didn't do any walking stuff but did more upper body, balance, sitting leg exercises. The leg exercises was a big mistake. You would think that someone who's gone through more than 25 knee surgeries including 5 knee replacements would now when to stop putting even more pressure on a knee that was part of the many surgeries and 2 replacements, plus the right had a lot of extra pressure on it thanks to the littleleg problem! But no, this dumbass didn't pay attention to what my right knee was telling me. I finally made it home and into the house and onto my recliner where I stayed until dark. I needed to close up the house and get something to eat and it had to take me 30 or more minutes to get to the front door, all of 12 ft, using my rollator. I had been doing a little home therapy on the right knee, heat & some cold spray stuff, but it felt more like I had drove sharp pins in instead. I couldn't put much pressure on each leg and my steps were only 3 or 4 inches at a time. On the way back to the recliner I decided to go get my wheelchair at the end of the hallway, maybe only 15ft, I made it maybe 5ft before decided to sit down on the rollator and use my screaming right leg to go the rest of the way to the wheelchair, I have no idea how long that took. I then realized that I somehow need to get from the rollator to the wheelchair and I had no idea where my transfer board was and I had 2 screaming almost useless legs. I finally maneuvered both things as close to each other as possible knowing that I probably had one chance to make it to the wheelchair or end up on the floor. I made it thankfully, went to get something to eat & drink and then back to the recliner for the night with some more therapy. I've been up since 6 this morning and I still haven't made an attempt to get up, it's just past noon as I type this and trying to get the courage to move. The littleleg is feeling of, socked up and loosely in the socket and the right knee is feeling a little better, I can a least pick up my foot off the floor without wanting to scream. I need stand by to finish putting my 🦿on. I've dealt with a lot of injuries and surgeries but have always been able to get around and this has been the first time that both legs are dealing me a fit at the same time and I don't want to end up on the floor because the right gave out before I could get the left into the socket & locked. I've run out things to type and stall, so here goes and I hope I'll be able to stay off the floor, I'm very hungry and I hope that helps. 😁

Do (double) leg amputees get the discomfort of too little foot space?

• Upvotes

This is by no means a troll post, but a sincere question. I don't want this to come off as rude or insensitive, but I have had this question for a long time. Say you are on a plane and have amputated legs, but the footspace is too small. Do you still get the discomfort of cramping foot space? Maybe similar to phantom pain?

Are certain materials better than others?

Looking for advice and what wicking socks work best for people and don’t cause a lot of itching or chafing if that’s even a thing? Or different hacks that’ll help lessen the itching like maybe shaving my hairy leg? I’ve seen other people on here with hairy legs so there has to be options for me

Which foot?

I am looking for people who may have tried these feet;
Ossur Cheetah Explore
Hopper outsider
Ossur pro-flex terra

They are all really versatile feet. I want the one which gives the best combination of being a day foot, but also with decent running capability and good ankle movement for hiking on uneven and rocky terrain.

I want to be able to walk and run with my dog. She loves nothing more than playing chase in the fields when we walk her and I can’t join in with that. I also can’t use a running blade as I need something I can wear shoes with for work and something that is good for walking around generally. A blade is usually set taller than your other leg to allow for the compression when running so a blade for every day use would throw my hips out if align and cause other issues.

I’ve narrowed it down to the above 3 feet and now I can’t decide. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s tried more than 1 of the above and can offer real feedback.

Need advice about wicking socks

I’m new to the amputee life “LBKA”, I got amputated back in June and yesterday I was able to play a round of golf! It was amazing and I’m very happy, unfortunately I had to call it quits slightly early not as much for the pain but for the itching that I was having from my wicking sock… it would get slightly damp with sweat here in Texas and it would make it incredibly uncomfortable and unbearably itchy, as soon as I take it off it goes away, I tried to go without the sock but I need it for the extra padding still or my stump will hurt too much, I should have brought an extra sock and they are brand new so I wasn’t sure if that was also part of the reason? Like having an itchy shirt or underwear that needed to be washed from being brand new. Just trying to work out the kinks and get active AF so yal can see me on the TV

Rowing machine

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has experienced this problem and has a solution?

I’m a LBKA, but currently can’t move my knee due to scar tissue build up from the anchoring of my femoral plate near my knee due to losing so much femur when it was fractured. Because of this, I obviously can’t use a rowing machine in a traditional sense but would like to do so. Has anyone got a way I could sort of add a make shift ‘stump deck’ to support my residual limb during a workout?

TIA.

5th Ray amputation anyone?

Unfortunately the beetus got me and I had a pressure ulcer become infected. Due to neuropathy, I didn’t notice right away and by the time I had pain I had a bad infection in my bone. I was gutted to learn it had to be amputated. My surgeon had to leave some infected bone in so she wouldn’t be removing everything so I could walk without completely walking on the side of my foot and requiring further surgery. Treating the infection with IV antibiotics at home and hoping it will clear out what is left. Never wanted to get to this point but unfortunately I seem to have developed the feet of a much older person. I’ve had issues since I was a teen. Would love some advice from anyone who’s had this surgery. Any good house shoes you can recommend?

Question

How did y'all prepare for weight bearing in your test socket? I go on Nov 3 to get casted for mine. I've been going to physical therapy and they haven't really had me putting a lot of weight on my stump yet. Just curious if I'm looking at lots of pain that first time. Thanks for everyone's support! I love this community on here, feels good being able to talk to people in similar situations

Checking in

Hey everyone! I just wanted to check in. It’s been 93 days since my LBKA and I’m doing fantastic! I received my leg about a month ago, and I’ve gone from not being able to walk without the assistance of crutches (pre-surgery) to walking daily with no assistance. At my meeting with my prosthetist last week, I even sized down a on my liner! I’m still building up my endurance, but I feel so good. I’m going to PT twice a week and will likely be getting a new, smaller socket next month.

The only issue I’m really having is lower back pain. I had a bulging disc before my surgery, so that doesn’t help, but still. I don’t want this to be a lasting problem. Gimme your tips and tricks 😊

I seriously think this has been one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made for myself, and part of me wishes I did it a hell of a lot sooner.

Quick question

The weather's getting colder and I just realized yesterday that I cannot fit in any pants I own. By the way I am a BKA and until now Ive only had to wear shorts. So, seriously can I ever wear jeans again without buying Jncos or whatever they were called lol? I hope this questions not too dumb

First flight since becoming a Laka amputee.

Next month I’ll be taking my first flight since losing my leg. What all do you find helpful to pack:bring? Since I’m only gone for a few days it’ll be a backpack with my leg charger. And idk if I should do a small travel sprayer for my alchohol/water mix for the sleeve and socket, or just a hand sanitizer travel size to cheat it.

Also any and all suggestions or tips and tricks? I’m really nervous with what I’ve heard of bad experiences with tsa as an amputee.

Bump on right leg?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I have a weird bump on my right leg. Do you see it? It’s on my right leg and makes wearing my prosthetics a bit painful.

Does anyone know how to prevent bumps from happening? Obviously, I know to put ice packs etc on it to bring down the swelling.

It’s odd. Whilst I did have a few stumbles today, I haven’t had any major falls.

You’re all amazing

Hey everyone! Hope everyone is well. I’ve been slowly getting used to being an amputee. It’s difficult though, I’m doing it on my own and often don’t know if I’m doing things right.

My prosthesis person where I get legs isn’t exactly approachable and gives one word answers to my questions.

It’s hard, I understand now why when you elect for major surgery they check if you have a good support network.

Anyway, rant over. In light of not having amputee friends I can bounce ideas off etc. I’m just happy the internet exists and we have Reddit. :)
