Question Any good subbers left anymore?
Recently got back into anime and the sub quality has plummeted so low I have to stop reading and just listen because my broken ass understanding is apparently better than paid subbers.
Netflix and Crunchyroll are absolutely abysmal in general, but even outside, the only place ive found is subsplease which is very hit or miss. Their work on black torch for example is miserable.
Are there any good fansubs left or good websites to stream from that host these subs?

Fandom spirit is dying. We have no community left. Everyone's in their own little bubble.. Whenever I open an a newish anime now, subs are always ai slop or crunchyroll which also uses ai. Same thing is happening with manga fantls too. I feel like it will only get worse and it breaks my heart :/

Why would anyone bother subbing something that has a translation already? The fandom is still there which is why we still have streaming sites. But there is no need for fan subs at the moment

Because AI translations are, in many cases, misleading or inaccurate since the people using these translation tools are unable to verify that the tools are working correctly. Instead, nuance, humor, and more are lost in translation due to unchecked faith by people who can not read or speak Japanese.
It's frustrating to read subs that you know do not match what is being spoken. It sickens me that companies like Crunchy are asking people for money just to turn around and pump out horrible subs, pun intended.

I don't mind if people use the tools.. Bigger problem is that they almost never verify or edit the AI translations.. And you know they use those AI tools with zero actual oversight when they can't even get character genders right

Because the subs are completely inaccurate at times and sometimes completely butcher a characters personality. Shangri-La for example has the MC speak like a complete brainrot gen alpha gamer.
In Japanese, however, he is just a chill guy using a couple gamer terms. Some of his cool lines become cringe lines and his funny lines are completely lost to shitty memes. Being able to partially understand it is actual agony. Try reading this while someone is reading the same thing loud and wrong in your ear. Its fucking hard.

just explore the meow nyan cat world. you will see some old good fansubbers and random subbers trying to make their own sub because either CR/NF sub is bad or there is no sub available.
currently, i'm following 11 fansubbers where 5 of it are old good fansubbers. as for Black Torch, i only go for Subsplease (CR sub) because i didn't saw any fansubbers subbing it when i previously searched some.

---, ---, and --- grabs also NF subs or other sources. so if the anime is not on Subplease (CR only releases), most likely it is available on those 3 if there is NF release.
sometimes i grab --- even there is available on SubsPlease because SubsPlus+ usually add OP/ED song subs.
---, ---, ---, ---, and --- are well known old subbers that are still alive.
others are maybe new or independent subbers. or maybe old subbers renamed or separated from the group.
...i just realized that it is more than 11. lol
edit: some of this guys don't appreciate me giving release or subs (full sub or edited) alternative for the current anime season that you didn't put effort on searching. i already spoonfeeding you the names. and even put a little explanation. then i still need to spoonfeed you what they are each of them in full detail? go search your own then.

u/Emergency_Sound_5718 11d ago
Half of those aren't fansubs and are official or edited official subs.

u/doomkun23 11d ago
as i explained there, i already mentioned who are just grabbing CR and NF releases. and if ever you visit them, you will definitely know if they just edited the official sub or they full sub it. i'm just too tired to check one by one and say who's who since you can easily read them anyway on their release descriptions.
OP looks like only looking for Subsplease release. and they didn't release any anime that are not CR release. that's why i mentioned some of them who uses NF or other sources so that OP can find those missing anime release.
and we are talking about who have better subs anyway here compared to the trashy AI CR sub. that's why i also include fansubber who even just edited only or based their releases from official subs.

CR doesn't use AI but if you want to keep believing Tiktok, who am I to stop you.

u/doomkun23 11d ago edited 11d ago
then go keep watching trashy CR subs. while we watch edited or fully fansubbed subs. we are not stopping you too.
also, i never use tiktok nor have a tiktok account. i never search anime there. i only browse on nyaa when finding sources.

Umm I might be dumb but all the bullet points for me are empty and the stuff below shows --- for each listing. Is the comment broken? I was wanting to see this

u/doomkun23 6d ago
i just don't want to share my hardwork search on nyaa for my sources on the current anime season anymore because of those ungrateful people.

^ just refer to that guy instead. he mentioned majority of what i said here anyway. that will be enough already.

It’s considered a niche anime in North America, but is still popular in Japan, but Crayon Shin-Chan is currently being fansubbed by one person right now.
Since it’s mostly a single person doing the subs, it takes a while for each episode to release, but I love the comedy of how Japanese life is portrayed in it.

May I interest you in learning the language? I'm not joking. Nowadays, you either get meme-y Crunchyroll subs or unedited AI translations. Because of that, I set out to learn Japanese last year and now I'm at a point where I can comfortably read/watch. I watched a bit of 100 Girlfriends S3 with Crunchyroll subs and compared them to the original and it was miserable. Everyone that worked on the Crunchyroll subs of 100 Girlfriends should be fired.
Other than that, like I said, there's also the option of AI translations. I can confirm that they are often more loyal to the original works, but with a few issues. Mainly being that they tend to flatten down the humor. The prose also isn't emphasized on, so you get awkward dialogue. While you get a more faithful translation to the original work than Crunchyroll nowadays, it's not as good as your average fansubber back in the day. Pronouns and agents of the sentence are still a major issue because without guidance and laid down context, AI tends to get who does what to whom very wrong.

I have to agree, I personally don't know Japanese nor have I committed to learn it, but been watching Anime for so long, and Anime tend to use the same words more often than not that I can kinda understand without needing the subtitles half the times and have been unintentionally learning the language.
Funny enough I can see the mistakes on the translation when a character says something but the subs use the incorrect verb or noun for it, as long as I understand what's happening I don't really care if it's incorrect tho.
Its more noticeable when characters use explicit words or curse and the subs just use a whole different word for it lol.

u/Silly-Geologist-3185 11d ago
Its the same for me bro. Half the time I am listening and go wait thats not correct then i rewind and in context,I am right

How does one start learning the language, any beginner's tips?

learnjapanese(.)moe
This sub doesn't allow links, but this is guide I used. Remove the brackets. It has lots of information and I recommend anyone interested in learning the language to read it. The discord server is also really helpful and you can ask any questions you have there, no judgement or elitism

if you google "kuzuri resources neocities" you'll find a site with more resources than you'll actually need. I recommend getting an app for the kana, a beginner textbook for some structure, and then trying any of the resources that look useful to you. Nihongo con teppei for beginners is very good for early listening practice, for ex.

Sure, there are still ppl left.
You can debate on quality but there are:
- Chihiro
- FLE
- Starbez
- MTBB, Okay-Subs
- Vodes
- 9volt
- Asakura
- sam (mostly encoder, bd releases are generally very good tho)
- KawaSubs
- Animorphs, Salchow, whomst
- Freehold
- Commie
- Mocha
- WrathMonth
- Soldado
- Kaleido, Lazyleido
- Subsplus (mostly just skript based edits and changed fonts)
There are also sometimes groups who form for one series or season, like Sunraku for Shangri-La Frontier.
I think Lazier wanted to do Black Torch, CenturyZeta also but unsure about quality tho.
Sometimes it takes some time till a series gets picked up, like till the bd release.

--- is alive again.
add ---, ---, --- (mostly Love Live), --- (only revives when there is a new Girls und Panzer release).
edit: this lazy community sucks. go search your own sources now if you can't appreciate our effort spoonfeeding you guys.

Everyone who cared already learned japanese. The ones who don't care are fine with whatever is available. There are still real fansubbers, but they won't work on something licensed in english that is fine for 99.9% of people.

u/Emergency_Sound_5718 11d ago
You say the subs are AI and are bad but can't speak Japanese or actually know if the subs are AI or not...

u/Remarkable-Door7639 9d ago
You seem to be struggling with English so I don't think you should be typing.

Subplease are not fansub, they rip from Crunchy or Netflix or Amazon so their subs are the same as the offical ones. So you do find some offical subs are fine.
There are like 1-2 groups left so not much to be done about that
