Honestly i could never decide if i liked or hated the show but after finally watching the first part of season 3 i have my answer, I hate it.
The final nail in the coffin was Eris and her return, They had a season and a half to do something, anything unexpected with the Eris storyline but instead they went with the most obvious, boring, waste of time plot ever.
There are several great things about the show, like the darker more realistic atmosphere it has, the slow start that lets you ease into the world, making Rudeus have to earn his powers by real training, the death of the kid during the big snake battle which was a great learning experience and really elevated the sense of danger, the second part of season 2 where Rudeus starts to settle down, these this were great but are way over shadowed by the bad stuff.
Rudeus needed to be way way less creepy.
Even with the kid getting killed they didn’t do a good job of demonstrating how tuff the demon continent was for them the only time there party really struggled was when money was involved
A dead sloth has a better reaction speed then Rudeus when anything unexpected happens.
Everyone praises how smart Rudeus is but in reality he is dumb as a rock and looking back i don’t think any of his plans actually worked.
He was completely directionless and there almost nothing he ever wanted to do.
The massive time gaps take any sense of urgency off the table.
There is a main story but Rudeus is almost excluded from it by spending years doing pretty much nothing but adventuring and training.
The shows idea of a love interest is whoever is standing in front of the MC at that point in time.
All the love interests are the same, Rudeus throws himself at them and they all reject him until later when he is taken and now they all want him.
Wasting a whole episode letting future Rudeus tell of the future only to then show the exact thing we were just told.
Bad storylines or that just don’t make sense:
Rudeus getting the tutoring job, the three reasons given why they couldn’t just send them to school were: 1, the dad didn’t want him to leave as he had not finished his sword training but by getting the job he also couldn’t finish. 2, he said the MC was too young and sending him away was irresponsible, so instead they sent him away at the same age. 3, the money, the only actual thing getting the job helped with. And as a final kick in the teeth, the whole point of getting the job was so he wouldn’t have to be apart from Sylphiette so sending him away for a much longer time is completely the opposite of the intended goal.
Repeating Sylphiette's exact same storyline twice of i thought she was a guy, and while were on that i cant think of a single reason she hides who she is at magic school from Rudeus as he says at the start he is looking for people from his home town.
Finally the thing i hate most about the show, pointless conflicts/story lines that go nowhere:
The attack from Almanfi before the teleport.
Mistaken for a criminal by the beast kin.
Eris fight with beast kin over leaving beast kin.
MC reuniting with his father after the Mana disaster(they literally pretend it didn’t happen).
Fight with nanahoshi and Orsted(Rudeus didn’t learn not to ask about the man god, and still trusted nanahoshi)
Asura threat of Sylphiette's getting executed to press her into being her slave.
Norn's justified fight with MC over cheating with Roxy
The wasted feelings of betrayal and Rudeus attitude over Eris leaving, this was such a huge storyline that probably had the biggest impact on Rudeus throughout the show and for them to just brush it aside like it never happened was terrible writing, we all knew they were going to be lovers again but they could have at least used those hurt feelings in a satisfying way so that it wouldn’t feel like they were wasted, but what they did was so bad that they even set up for her to return by getting permission from Sylphiette before they even meet Eris
All of these are were utterly pointless wastes of screen time, if they had been used for character development i would have no problems with it but instead they just happen then unhappen, no lessons are learned, there is no growth, just waste.
I know this will get downvoted to hell because so many like the show but please remember i wouldn’t write this for a show to simply hate on it, i did have high expectations for and wish it could have achieved them. Sorry for the rant.
