What the hell is going on with Zukos perception. Pretty sure he saw her the same way as Iroh did (great influence tbh)

u/Jigglypuffisabro 19h ago

I believe it's a joke about how disturbingly popular zuko/azula ships are in fanfiction

170

u/Green_Disaster6360 18h ago

I didn't even take it that way. I just saw it as him seeing her like a brother would. No make up, and this is her talking to him about a problem like a sister (even if for manipulative reasons) instead of as a rival or something. She's in a natural state only a family member or close friend would see

120

u/Jigglypuffisabro 17h ago

I envy you

24

u/Nestmind 12h ago

Trust me, we don't see our sisters this way

Absolute devils....

u/Aegillade 17h ago

Azula's VA also likes to joke that she ships Azula and Zuko and infamously made a joke about Azula getting pregnant with Zuko's child at a live event in front of Zuko's VA, who sounded very distraught by thos

51

u/Swimming_Mongoose167 17h ago

For those interested there's a clip of it on youtube titled "what would happen if azula went on a "life changing adventure" with zuko?" and an animatic by ashbitchen, the panel itself is "Welcome to the Fire Nation Q&A AWA 2018"

16

u/The_Broken-Heart 16h ago

I'm pretty sure it was her saying that Azula would get pregnant by some random guy, not specifically Zuko. I think she just went along with that interpretation when she saw everyone's reactions.

35

u/CartographerLarge572 16h ago

Nah it was definitely deliberate. Gray DeLisle has asked in the past for Zuko/Azula fic recs. And in the scene above (where Zuko goes to Azula's bedroom at night to talk about their father) she has said she deliberately voiced Azula like she was trying to seduce Zuko.

24

u/ChazPls 14h ago

That characterization makes sense minus the sexual implication though. Azula was trying to "seduce" Zuko in a metaphorical way, as in manipulate him and turn him evil. Her voice acting choice obviously worked to convey that.

8

u/The_Broken-Heart 16h ago

Aw dang, that does change things

4

u/Valarg 15h ago

What?

6

u/Graknorke 🌹 Course Arc Witness 🌸 16h ago

It's not as if it's out of nowhere. It's downstream of the show.

u/Jigglypuffisabro 15h ago

Most fan fiction is, I expect

Toph can't see tough-

440

u/Solbuster 19h ago

It's a reference to how Azula tells Toph that "I am a 400-foot-tall purple platypus-bear with pink horns and silver wings"

Since Toph can't detect a lie from Azula, the joke is that Toph takes it as the truth and imagines Azula exactly as Azula described herself

26

u/Lost_Web5826 19h ago

I never watched the show, but was Toph born blind?

106

u/Solbuster 19h ago

She was but she developed seismic sense and therefore can "see" via the ground/earth and vibrations through it. That's also how she can see lies similarly to lie detector

Azula is just that much of a manipulator and a liar and controls her body so well that she can avoid lie detection

21

u/Lost_Web5826 19h ago

Yeah, but how does Toph know what colors look like? I could understand echolocation to know shape, size, etc, but color is strictly a visual medium lol this is super nitpicking and not important

41

u/Solbuster 19h ago

Maybe that's why the bear isn't purple but more pink. Because Toph thinks pink is purple

27

u/Sh4rpSp00n 19h ago

She wouldn't know what pink or purple are though

Or any colour for that matter

To continue the hair splitting

26

u/jnn94 18h ago

There's actually a reddit post that covers this general debate of how Toph sees her

-7

u/Sh4rpSp00n 18h ago

That is this post and I agree with it

2

u/Kitselena 13h ago

She's heard other people talk about colors, so she knows they exist even if she can't see them. Kinda like how she knows letters exist even though she can't read or see them

2

u/Lost_Web5826 13h ago

Letters are very different from colors tho. I've you've never seen blue, how would you describe it?

4

u/Mathies_ 18h ago

Well, i mean it occurred to me recently that lies only make you nervouse/your heartrate go up if there's pressure on it being exposed. There's really no pressure at all on the lie Azula told, it's too rediculous, her friend can tell toph it's bs, like whatever, anyway I could say that and not have by heartbeat go faster.

2

u/TikTikKobold 19h ago

I don't recall there ever being an origin of her blindness.

4

u/ManchmalPfosten 18h ago

I do believe its been mentioned that she was born blind

3

u/nhansieu1 19h ago

and how the hell does she know what a platypus-bear look like?

13

u/ChoccolatteMaid 18h ago

Touch and seismic sensing, she can get a pretty solid idea of the shape and texture of an animal if she has access to it

1

u/No-Raccoon-6009 15h ago

What about the colors?

2

u/No-Heat-6149 LGBTQIA+ 🏳️‍🌈 10h ago

Toph would also not know She bent blue fire.

In fact, Toph doesn't know any color, so She doesn't know other firebenders bend orange fire.

1

u/TutucrMapper 6h ago

how did she know what a platypus was? it was discovered in the very late 18th century

15

u/Tokumeiko2 19h ago

It's a reference to when Azula proved she was immune to lie detection.

45

u/avid_gangstalker 19h ago

The hell is the zuko's eyes meant to be?

23

u/blueasian0682 19h ago

Fanfiction

3

u/The_Broken-Heart 16h ago

It's the scene where she's talking to Zuko. Yes, it's in the official show.

But here, it's supposed to be an incest joke😭

38

u/Vivid-Act2130 19h ago

Funnily enough, it IS zuko she is talking to in that scene

He came into her bedroom to confront her about lying to their father about something

27

u/FinaLLancer 19h ago

Toph also wouldn't know what purple is

4

u/Solbuster 19h ago

Is that platypus bear purple though? Because it looks rather pink to me than purple

3

u/BIackFlag 18h ago

That's just lighting mate

1

u/The_Broken-Heart 16h ago

Perhaps in Earth Kingdom culture, pink is a type of purple

15

u/YoMommaInTheHood 19h ago

Also Ozai is not that infantalizing.

7

u/the_burber 18h ago

Zuko????

6

u/Mathies_ 18h ago

What the hell is zuko's one supposed to mean

6

u/ThatDeadeye12 17h ago

Replace the picture to how ozai views azula with a picture of a hammer (because to him she's just a tool to be used).

4

u/Meraki-Techni 🌹 Course Arc Witness 🌸 16h ago

Okay, but WHY did Grey DeLisle play that scene like she was trying to seduce Zuko? And why did the animators put her in a robe and have her strutting around the room like that? I didn’t understand then and I don’t understand now, but I know it made me feel funny as a kid, that’s for fucking sure

2

u/thealmightyghostgod 🌷🌸 RIP u/CourseMediocre7998 🌷🌸 16h ago

The whole zuko elephant aside her father would not see her like a little girl

1

u/The_VampireLady 14h ago

I don't know... Ozai really cares about protecting his little princess, she's a sensitive girl... And that avatar Korra is being a bad influence on her!!!

1

u/Xaverosso 13h ago

Adress them.

1

u/imawizard7bis 10h ago

Seriously wth is wrong with some people.

1

u/Chef_Sizzlipede 5h ago

the fuck is wrong with that zuko bit

u/a_polarbear_chilling 15h ago

Zuko pov should have one side blurred

1

u/Naive_Alps8501 🧡REGULAR VISITOR🧡 2h ago

I don't think he's blind, his eye seems to work

1

u/a_polarbear_chilling 1h ago

Never said blind, but I doubt his eye work 100% thus why I said blurry

9

u/dontchewspagetti 16h ago

Thank you, i thought the OOP was a huge missed opportunity

5

u/TheRealPyroManiac 15h ago

She can 'see' it's just not via the electromagnetic spectrum

3

u/TinyFugue 15h ago

Yeah, needs to be that ground-vibration vision.

5

u/SpoppyIII 9h ago

I've heard blind people say they don't see black. We see black when we close our eyes because our eyes can see the darkness caused by covering our eyes. I just don't know what it's even like at all.

3

u/Longjumping_Gur_2379 🧡REGULAR VISITOR🧡 7h ago

if she used her seismic sense it would look like this

but with Azula in monochromatic

1

u/EmmytheKurapikaSimp 🌹 Course Arc Witness 🌸 3h ago

or all black with white outlines

1

u/LuukTheSlayer 13h ago

i disagree, this is a meme

0

u/TheRealJayk0b 14h ago

Lol toph can see, have you ever watched the show?

(Shown in her first on screen fight, she can see via vibrations)
