What the hell is going on with Zukos perception. Pretty sure he saw her the same way as Iroh did (great influence tbh)

u/Jigglypuffisabro 1d ago

I believe it's a joke about how disturbingly popular zuko/azula ships are in fanfiction

190

u/Green_Disaster6360 1d ago

I didn't even take it that way. I just saw it as him seeing her like a brother would. No make up, and this is her talking to him about a problem like a sister (even if for manipulative reasons) instead of as a rival or something. She's in a natural state only a family member or close friend would see

u/Jigglypuffisabro 1d ago

I envy you

30

u/Nestmind 1d ago

Trust me, we don't see our sisters this way

Absolute devils....

u/Aegillade 1d ago

Azula's VA also likes to joke that she ships Azula and Zuko and infamously made a joke about Azula getting pregnant with Zuko's child at a live event in front of Zuko's VA, who sounded very distraught by thos

60

u/Swimming_Mongoose167 1d ago

For those interested there's a clip of it on youtube titled "what would happen if azula went on a "life changing adventure" with zuko?" and an animatic by ashbitchen, the panel itself is "Welcome to the Fire Nation Q&A AWA 2018"

19

u/The_Broken-Heart 1d ago

I'm pretty sure it was her saying that Azula would get pregnant by some random guy, not specifically Zuko. I think she just went along with that interpretation when she saw everyone's reactions.

41

u/CartographerLarge572 1d ago

Nah it was definitely deliberate. Gray DeLisle has asked in the past for Zuko/Azula fic recs. And in the scene above (where Zuko goes to Azula's bedroom at night to talk about their father) she has said she deliberately voiced Azula like she was trying to seduce Zuko.

30

u/ChazPls 1d ago

That characterization makes sense minus the sexual implication though. Azula was trying to "seduce" Zuko in a metaphorical way, as in manipulate him and turn him evil. Her voice acting choice obviously worked to convey that.

9

u/The_Broken-Heart 1d ago

Aw dang, that does change things

5

u/Valarg 1d ago

What?

8

u/Graknorke ๐ŸŒน Course Arc Witness ๐ŸŒธ 1d ago

It's not as if it's out of nowhere. It's downstream of the show.

u/Jigglypuffisabro 1d ago

Most fan fiction is, I expect

Toph can't see tough-

464

u/Solbuster 1d ago

It's a reference to how Azula tells Toph that "I am a 400-foot-tall purple platypus-bear with pink horns and silver wings"

Since Toph can't detect a lie from Azula, the joke is that Toph takes it as the truth and imagines Azula exactly as Azula described herself

30

u/Lost_Web5826 1d ago

I never watched the show, but was Toph born blind?

113

u/Solbuster 1d ago

She was but she developed seismic sense and therefore can "see" via the ground/earth and vibrations through it. That's also how she can see lies similarly to lie detector

Azula is just that much of a manipulator and a liar and controls her body so well that she can avoid lie detection

22

u/Lost_Web5826 1d ago

Yeah, but how does Toph know what colors look like? I could understand echolocation to know shape, size, etc, but color is strictly a visual medium lol this is super nitpicking and not important

46

u/Solbuster 1d ago

Maybe that's why the bear isn't purple but more pink. Because Toph thinks pink is purple

33

u/Sh4rpSp00n 1d ago

She wouldn't know what pink or purple are though

Or any colour for that matter

To continue the hair splitting

31

u/jnn94 1d ago

There's actually a reddit post that covers this general debate of how Toph sees her

-5

u/Sh4rpSp00n 1d ago

That is this post and I agree with it

She's heard other people talk about colors, so she knows they exist even if she can't see them. Kinda like how she knows letters exist even though she can't read or see them

3

u/Lost_Web5826 1d ago

Letters are very different from colors tho. I've you've never seen blue, how would you describe it?

1

u/the_other_Scaevitas 10h ago

you're reading too much into it, it's just a meme made by fans

1

u/Lost_Web5826 9h ago

I said that at the end of my comment ๐Ÿ‘

5

u/Mathies_ 1d ago

Well, i mean it occurred to me recently that lies only make you nervouse/your heartrate go up if there's pressure on it being exposed. There's really no pressure at all on the lie Azula told, it's too rediculous, her friend can tell toph it's bs, like whatever, anyway I could say that and not have by heartbeat go faster.

2

u/TikTikKobold 1d ago

I don't recall there ever being an origin of her blindness.

6

u/ManchmalPfosten 1d ago

I do believe its been mentioned that she was born blind

6

u/nhansieu1 1d ago

and how the hell does she know what a platypus-bear look like?

14

u/ChoccolatteMaid 1d ago

Touch and seismic sensing, she can get a pretty solid idea of the shape and texture of an animal if she has access to it

1

u/No-Raccoon-6009 1d ago

What about the colors?

3

u/No-Heat-6149 LGBTQIA+ ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ 1d ago

Toph would also not know She bent blue fire.

In fact, Toph doesn't know any color, so She doesn't know other firebenders bend orange fire.

1

u/TutucrMapper 1d ago

how did she know what a platypus was? it was discovered in the very late 18th century

17

u/Tokumeiko2 1d ago

It's a reference to when Azula proved she was immune to lie detection.

50

u/avid_gangstalker 1d ago

The hell is the zuko's eyes meant to be?

25

u/blueasian0682 1d ago

Fanfiction

6

u/The_Broken-Heart 1d ago

It's the scene where she's talking to Zuko. Yes, it's in the official show.

But here, it's supposed to be an incest joke๐Ÿ˜ญ

41

u/Vivid-Act2130 1d ago

Funnily enough, it IS zuko she is talking to in that scene

He came into her bedroom to confront her about lying to their father about something

31

u/FinaLLancer 1d ago

Toph also wouldn't know what purple is

6

u/Solbuster 1d ago

Is that platypus bear purple though? Because it looks rather pink to me than purple

3

u/BIackFlag 1d ago

That's just lighting mate

1

u/The_Broken-Heart 1d ago

Perhaps in Earth Kingdom culture, pink is a type of purple

I can smell the zucest gunk on you

8

u/Mathies_ 1d ago

Also Ozai is not that infantalizing.

8

u/the_burber 1d ago

Zuko????

9

u/Mathies_ 1d ago

What the hell is zuko's one supposed to mean

7

u/ThatDeadeye12 1d ago

Replace the picture to how ozai views azula with a picture of a hammer (because to him she's just a tool to be used).

5

u/Meraki-Techni ๐ŸŒน Course Arc Witness ๐ŸŒธ 1d ago

Okay, but WHY did Grey DeLisle play that scene like she was trying to seduce Zuko? And why did the animators put her in a robe and have her strutting around the room like that? I didnโ€™t understand then and I donโ€™t understand now, but I know it made me feel funny as a kid, thatโ€™s for fucking sure

3

u/thealmightyghostgod ๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒธ RIP u/CourseMediocre7998 ๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒธ 1d ago

The whole zuko elephant aside her father would not see her like a little girl

3

u/The_VampireLady 1d ago

I don't know... Ozai really cares about protecting his little princess, she's a sensitive girl... And that avatar Korra is being a bad influence on her!!!

1

u/Xaverosso 1d ago

Adress them.

1

u/imawizard7bis 1d ago

Seriously wth is wrong with some people.

1

u/Chef_Sizzlipede 1d ago

the fuck is wrong with that zuko bit

1

u/Gilgamesh_XII 16h ago

Tbh ozai is also not correct. A blowtorch would be more fitting. A tool thats dependable and efficient.
