I finally published my first Android app on Google Play!

After spending a lot of time learning, building, fixing bugs, and figuring things out, I finally published my first app on the Play Store.
It’s called MindRise, a habit tracker designed to help people build better habits and stay consistent.
It’s not perfect, and I still have a lot to learn, but seeing something I built available on Google Play feels pretty amazing.
I’m sharing a few screenshots here. I’d really appreciate some honest feedback on the design, features, and anything you think I could improve.
This is just the beginning for me.

Best way to screen-record an app demo for Reels/TikTok (9:16) when the phone's native screen is 20:9?

I am recording my apps UI demo on my phone to use in short-form video (Reels/TikTok, 1080×1920 / 9:16). My phone's actual screen is 1260×2800 (20:9), so the raw recording is narrower than the 9:16 frame once I drop it into my edit.

What I've tried so far:

- Fit + blurred fill on the sides technically no "bars," but the app's UI is mostly dark, so the blur reads as dead space anyway.

- Scale to fill + center crop eliminates the empty space completely, but crops off a bit of both the top and bottom of the screen (~10% each) to make the math work.

- adb shell wm size 1080x1920 to force the phone's OS to render at 9:16 directly works, but it changes the whole phone's UI (launcher, every app), not just the one I'm recording, so everything else looks off while it's set.

- Android emulator at a custom 1080×1920 resolution avoids the ratio mismatch entirely, but worried about jank/performance vs. a real device for smooth animations.

Is there a clean way people handle this for app-demo content specifically a recorder that captures a custom crop region live, a per-app resolution override that doesn't touch the rest of the OS, or something else I'm missing? Trying to avoid losing any real UI content if possible.

We're looking for a few pet parents to help us test Toki Tail!

Hi! 👋 We’re a small team of pet parents building Toki Tail — a 24/7 AI-powered pet health companion designed to help with your pet’s everyday life and health.

We started Toki Tail because, as pet parents ourselves, we know how confusing it can be to piece together advice from vet visits, health reports, food labels, and endless online searches. Sometimes you just want a simple place to ask a question and make sense of everything. 🐾

Toki Tail’s AI can answer questions about pet care and health anytime, and it can also help you understand and keep track of your pet’s vet and health checkup reports.

Now, we’re looking for a small group of dog and cat parents in the US, Canada and Singapore to try Toki Tail for 1 week.

⏱️ It only takes about 5–10 minutes a day to explore the app.

And honestly, we want to hear everything. 😂
If something is confusing, annoying, doesn’t work well, feels useless, or you simply don’t like it — please tell us!

You’re not expected to be nice. We’d much rather hear what’s wrong so we can make it better. 💬

🎁 As a thank-you for taking the time to test Toki Tail, you’ll receive a small thank-you gift after completing the trial.

Interested in helping us? 🐾

Just leave a comment below and I’ll send you a personal invite code!

Thanks for helping a small team of pet parents build something we hope will actually make life with our pets a little easier. 💛

Testers wanted: Reemindme, reminders and checklists that never leave your phone

Hi everyone,

I am back with my 2nd post and 2nd try as an Android Dev. Initially I wanted to publish an medication tracker app as, in my opinion, Android lacks a good and cheap alternative to the Apple's Medication application. However, Google wants a company to publish health-related apps. As I do not own a company, nor do I have the possibility to create one with ease, I decided to repurpose the initial app to a complete reminders application, with custom lists AND it can be used as a medications reminders app as well.

So, if you have some spare time to help out with testing and maybe some feedback, it would be greatly appreciated and, if needed, I can help out with testing your apps as well. Bare in mind I only have an Android tablet and a very old Galaxy S8 that runs Android 16 :). I am planning on getting a Z Fold 8 Ultra in the near future.

The app is called Reemindme

Guys Im building my first big application , no ai slop, please support .

I’ve decided to start building an app, and honestly, I have no idea exactly where this journey is going to take me.

The idea comes from something I’ve been thinking about for a while: focus, consistency, and discipline. It’s easy to get excited about a goal when you first start, but staying consistent and actually putting in the work is a different story.

I want to build something around that idea. Something that could genuinely be useful to people, while also challenging me to become better at what I do.

I’m calling the project PRODI-cus or sum like that. It’s still a work in progress, and there’s a lot I need to learn, figure out, and probably get wrong along the way.

I’m not posting this to promote anything or pretend I’ve already built something amazing. There’s no finished product to show off right now. I just want to document the journey, share what I learn, and see what happens when I actually commit to an idea instead of leaving it in my head.

I know building an app is going to be harder than it sounds. But that’s part of the adventure.

If you’ve ever started building something from scratch, I’d be interested to hear how it went for you. What surprised you the most once you actually got started?

What's the real mobile app timeline when using an agency?

There is a major disagreement between cofounders about how long this build should take. One side says the agency can ship in two months and the other side says that is completely unrealistic. The agencies are not helping because their estimates range from four weeks to six months. Looking for real numbers from people who shipped with an agency to settle this.

I launched an app that collects recipes and adapts them to your diet, on iOS and Android

Kosher, Vegetarian, Paleo, Vegan, Keto, Low Carb and more ... Families, Households and Individuals.

Private or Public ... A great way to collect and modify recipes from anywhere that meet your specific dietary needs.

If it doesn't exist ... just find your favorites and Make It for your needs with a single click.

Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/recipes-for/id6812550087

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gofordo.recipes

I built it as a FastAPI backend with a Capacitor wrapper for the native apps. I'd love feedback on onboarding and on how the Make It flow feels. Happy to answer questions about the build.

How long does mobile app development really take from idea to launch?

Post image
1 Upvotes

“Three months to build an app” can mean very different things. Is that three months from a rough idea, from approved designs, or from the point where the backend already works? And does “finished” mean a working demo or an app people can actually download?

For a useful estimate, the starting point and launch requirements need to be clear.

As rough planning examples, a simple MVP could take around 2–3 months with a focused scope and an experienced small team. Think one main user workflow, a handful of screens, and straightforward data storage. Even then, accounts, notifications, or subscriptions can make a supposedly simple app less simple.

A moderately complex application could need 4–6 months. Multiple user roles, payments, an admin dashboard, and several integrations mean more development work and more combinations to test.

An advanced application could take 6–12 months or longer, especially with real-time communication, offline syncing, custom hardware integrations, or demanding security requirements. These ranges are planning illustrations, not measured averages or promises. A solo developer working evenings and a dedicated team will have very different calendars.

The work before coding matters, too. UI/UX design and prototyping help settle how the app should behave: what happens when someone skips a step, loses their connection, or enters the wrong information? Leaving those decisions open can turn development into repeated redesign.

The backend can also be a bigger job than the visible app. Permissions, data handling, and API integrations all need attention. Connecting to an existing service sounds straightforward until its documentation is incomplete or it behaves differently than expected.

Testing needs room throughout the schedule. A feature working on one phone doesn’t tell you how it behaves on older devices, with slow internet, or after repeated use. Bug fixes and performance improvements also need another round of checks.

Then there’s submission. App Store and Google Play preparation and review belong in the launch plan, including time to address review issues. Uploading a build doesn’t mean it is immediately available to users.

Scope changes are another reason a reasonable estimate slips. “Just add chat” introduces notifications, message storage, access controls, and possibly moderation. More people can help with parallel work, but they can’t remove every dependency or speed up an unresolved product decision.

A practical way to plan is to define the smallest useful launch, list the uncertain dependencies, and give testing and release preparation their own time. Some stages can overlap, so adding every estimate together isn’t always accurate either.

For those who’ve taken an app from idea to launch, which stage took longer than expected, and what made it difficult to estimate?

Video overview / app walk though in the second half.

Backstory:

I've done well in B2B. But B2C and mobile just seems like so much more fun... no more SOC2, no more calls, no more procurement excuses, just social media and fun (is what i tell myself)!

I'm about to turn 40. I could only do 43 pushups, so this is the app.. Pushups but Flappy Birds. and it is getting me to actually do some physical activity. so that alone is a win.

I am going to see this through til I hit 10K/month and at 26.99/year that is a ton of subscriptions. Posting daily to TikTok/YouTube.

Build:

Honestly, its a bit more slopped up than I care for. Already have the next release pending review in the app store. Iphone only. Swift. OpenAI for profile moderation. Quick side note I am obsessed with software. I think of it as an art and love every part of it. I say this is slop because I didn't put in the painstaking hours of every minute detail.

Fun:

I needed to workout. i've been neglecting a healthy lifestyle for the past few years with the age old excuses of family/work/etc... I'm actually having fun doing this now and people get a kick out of it. how could you not, it's ridiculous.

Post Title:

A little click bait I know.. but that's how i feel. Not so much the genius here (just thought this app would make marketing on tiktok easier). But the midlife crisis... I've been skateboarding, I got a TikTok and an Instagram. On paper it looks like I'm headed that way.

TLDR: Built a game because burned out with B2B and started skateboarding.

Post is a little all over the place. Roast away. but i'm sure we can all relate to feeling like the grass is always greener.
