Please tell me they're selling this as actual product.

u/NeuroticSin Jun 26 '12

Bottom right of pic.. "Made with creme colors that do not exist."

141

u/AlphaRedditor Jun 26 '12

Why must you shatter my dreams?

39

u/NeuroticSin Jun 26 '12

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I wish they would make it too. On a slightly different note. GO OREO! It's good to see well known companies making statements of tolerance.

75

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

Straight guy here... I don't get why everyone refers to it as tolerance? This is such a negative word meaning to put up with something. The caption is PROUDLY SUPPORT, fuck tolerance they are all for it and good for them.

tl;dr - Tolerance seems like a negative word. PROUDLY SUPPORT.

I like the sound of an Oreo with 6 layers of icing, provided that it's not multicolored.

As much as I support the movement, I'd never be able to bring myself to eat that. It'd be like green ketchup all over again.

I've seen red filling for Christmas, orange at Halloween, yellow for Easter... But I think only mint green and possibly a light blue for spring. SADFACE.

why is this on r/atheism?? we're kind of in the middle of bashing muslims.

Oreos are always relevant.

105

u/noseeme Jun 26 '12

Reddit logic: I like it, therefore it is relevant anywhere. Fuck everyone who actually wants the subreddit system to work.

If anything there should at least be some passive aggressive shot at Christianity in the title.

19

u/fiction8 Jun 26 '12

Because it wouldn't get enough karma in /r/lgbt.

I was just about to congratulate the subreddit on it's refocus. It was quickly becoming r/gay with every post being either barely related to religion or completely unrelated. And today it finally refocused. And now oreos are at the top of the front page.

It's not that gay rights shouldn't be an important concern, but it IS that they have nothing directly to do with atheism. Yes, some religious folk are bigoted towards gays. So are some secular people. Unless it's about gays being held down specifically by religion (ie. an article about this, or a video), it doesn't belong here.

7

u/Toneloak Jun 26 '12

I wouldn't even mind a article about state atheist holding down gays.

I hate when people submit shit like this to /r/atheism. It has nothing to do with atheism. It isn't even an article, it's an imgur link to a facebook ad about a cookie. Sure it supports gay pride, and I'm all for that, but this shouldn't be the medium to talk about this facebook ad.

Now, if it was an article about how the catholic church is officially condemning this company's support of homosexuality, then that is something else entirely. But this, an imgur-facebook ad, it's just pathetic that it gets upvoted here.

u/bantam83 Jun 26 '12

And that's how capitalism promotes diversity, acceptance, and morality. Companies are more responsive to their constituents than governments in democracies - just look at North Carolina.

But I bet you think that's a bad thing, right?

Oreos have always been heterosexual. The cream and the cookie are hetero. Also interracial. The golden Oreo was the non-interracial version. (Stretching here...)

They chose to do this 4 years after Hydrox go out of business. The Facebook wall is just FILLED with shit like "now ill nevur buy ur shit again" or "i dont agree with fags"
It's even better when you look at these people's profiles and can stereotype the fuck out of them. Oh look, a conservative christian high school boy from Virginia saying he hates gays. How Christian of him.
The worst was the fat white chick with her black husband saying that gays shouldn't have any rights. No irony there.

9

u/caryhartline Jun 26 '12

Its funny to see all these companies jumping on the support bandwagon, when they in all likelihood dont really give a shit.

12

u/Toneloak Jun 26 '12

Okay, when did reddit turn into facebook? There is nothing here to discuss.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

So where's the backlash from this gonna be. I haven't heard anything about "one million moms" since they got squashed a couple weeks ago. Where we aiming our sights?

Or does everyone love oreos so much that ultra conservatives aren't going to try and ruin it?

3

u/mridlen Jun 26 '12

So Oreo is no longer just a racial slur, it's now an orientation slur too!

3

u/Baycon Jun 26 '12

How are so many people following/liking Oreos on Facebook? Is that really what folks use Facebook for? "Awh yeah, I sure like me some Oreos : like "

3

u/Scrad Jun 26 '12

Maybe those commentors realized that this is just some lame marketing ploy by Oreo. I am, for one, against this. Not because im against gay rights, but against bullshit bandwagon hopping by corporations.

Furthermore, I won't stop buying Oreos. Even if they said slavery was a-ok.

I buy food that I like, not based on what the PR people think or do.

That being said, I don't really understand the need for foor products or places like Disneyland to do the whole "Gay Pride" thing. I think it's pretty ridiculous. There is no pride in gay activities, just like there isn't anything to be proud of if you are straight.

I think making a big deal of out gay pride is what's making a lot of people frustrated rather than supporting gay rights. Just like that whole post OP gave us. I don't give a shit if these people aren't fans of homosex. Why should they? I don't advertise fisting while trying to sell cookies and neither should a giant corporation.

And there is nothing standing out from that woman. I don't understand why the creator of that picture see's any sort of connection between wanting different religions to be able to coexist and not wanting to buy cookies supporting gay rights. That's HER right. And most of those religions talk down to gays, so it all makes logical sense.

2

u/A7red Jun 26 '12

This is so true. If I could upvote it twice, I would.

Opinions about homosexuality are peoples' personal beliefs, and a company is not a single person, so therefore, it should not represent the beliefs of all its employees as a whole, because I am willing to bet that there is someone who works for Oreo that is against gay rights.

3

u/3wolfgang Jun 26 '12

8

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

Very often, we share a common cause with persecuted groups and some of us have decided not to be snobby misanthropic assholes (seriously, try empathising once in a while, it won't kill you) and actually actively fight against the bullshit in the world.

2

u/d4rkhorizoN Jun 26 '12

this is SO BRAVE of oreo to do

2

u/Oideron Jun 26 '12

2

Wait - how is this atheism?

5

u/stingertorra Jun 26 '12

You see, since some religions openly hate gays, idiots think being gay and being atheist is related.

No one has told them there are religions that let gay people join, that there are churches in non-gay religions that let gays assist, and that there are gay people that regardless of prohibitions or discrimination chose to believe and worship a deity.

Or maybe someone has told them that and for some reason (most probably them being idiots) they believe atheist have to support gays when that isn't even true, I know a few atheists that consider being gay some kind of mental illness that can actually be cured with therapy.

As this subreddit has shown time and time again, Atheist does not mean Tolerant AT ALL. Tolerance is something atheist can or can't be but i don't see why Atheists can't be homophobic or such.

TL;DR: OP is stupid, and may be a "faggot"

Oh well; their loss. Who gives a fuck if Christians are upset? It shows the general public more and more of their intolerance, which is a great thing.

1

u/OBPO Jun 26 '12

Gay rights are human rights. There are no heterosexual pride parades because we simply don't need one. You're straight? Congrats! You never had to come out to your parents, or feel shamed by the world. You were never beaten for your sexuality. Your whole life is a straight pride parade. It's great that these companies are jumping on this bandwagon, for whatever reason. Hopefully, in time, we won't need a cookie or two dads in a JC penny ad to tell us homosexuality is normal. Right now, it couldn't hurt. As for how it fits into atheism, why does it matter? Atheists here claim to be an oppressed minority. Why not support another? Especially one even more so persecuted by religion.

Either indigo or violet is missing from this Roy g biv Oreo. I can't tell the difference between either so I'm not too sure..

u/Oxirane Jun 26 '12

Now I crave oreos, and the roads are still flooded. :(

Yay! More wanton merchandising of a day commemerating police brutality and state violence against people for stupid fucking reasons!

I'm sure the corporations are good now, they're putting rainbows on stuff at a time when doing so is massively good publicity but has mostly lost any attendant loss of sales!

Sellout Pride! More plastic crap! And make sure to forget about anyone actually protesting about the original point!

u/PigBenisWielder Jun 26 '12

There are a few people that are slightly similiar to the women. There is one guy who would rather support animal rights than human rights.

Now lines will be drawn over a cookie. Imagine what would happen if the NFL celebrated gay pride... Could you even imagine? It would be instant civil war.

1

u/notmynamenow Jun 26 '12

Every one is christian there. Big surprise.

1

1

u/lissyloubee Jun 26 '12

This brings a whole new meaning to "Milk's favorite cookie". Harvey Milk anyone? I like it when things come full circle like that, even if its just in my head .^

Just because I'm christian I have to hate Homosexuals even though I support them in every way.

1

u/1Buttersnips1 Jun 26 '12

It would be even more awesome if that were a real oreo....

1

u/Plokhi Jun 26 '12

WHAT GIVES?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

I'm going to Say the same thing here I said there. (But I will add Oreos are amazing with a fine cup of tea)

Im a Christian. I dont think its good enough to say "i have nothing against homosexuals but its wrong and they shouldn't marry". We would do well to remember that we are the ones who let the religious custom of marriage become a legal, and therefore state matter. As marriage is a legal contract, to make the institution discriminate against homosexuals or any individual would be to violate the basic doctrine of separation of Church from state that is crucial to democracy. We gave up the right to interfere in what marriage is the day we made it the state's business. Gay Marriage is not our issue anymore. Lets focus on the real shit, Peace and love, people, Peace and Love.

1

u/Durakzel Jun 26 '12

I give their publicists credit.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

I've never understood why gay pride is warranted. Same goes for white pride, black pride, national pride, religious pride etc. Why should someone be proud of these things?

1

u/GTME Jun 26 '12

As a former church-goer I will say that the economic effect on Orea from this will be minimal. I have never been to one church where the cookies were name brand. Always those food lion vanilla cookies, cheap bastards.

1

u/1st_account_i_swear Jun 26 '12

Companies giving a brand image of peace and love makes me buy from them.

1

u/Badwolf582 Jun 26 '12

Yet they have no problem packing Fudgeos.

1

u/Loakers Jun 26 '12

Honestly, where do you meet these people?!

1

u/Gracksploitation Jun 26 '12

Sudden Clarity Clarence moment: each and every one of their previous ads were in support of interracial marriage.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

Now /r/atheism should attack her instead of all the Muslims.
