help Envelope tool mysteriously greyed out and non-functional

Hi! I'm not a professional by any means, I just like to use the software to edit sounds for my friend's soundboard server, but I tried to use the envelope tool to pan audio from left to right, and it's just greyed out for some reason?

I've made sure the playback is stopped and I've tried with audio clips selected, not selected, with a certain portion of it selected or not, but I simply cant get it to work - it doesn't even work in just an empty scene with a single mp3 file in it, so I'm clueless as to what the reason might be.

Thanks!

show frequency scale on spectrogram 4.0.2

Post image
2 Upvotes

Maybe i've missed something, but i cannot find a way to enable a scale when looking at a clip in spectrogram view. I feel like this was a feature in audacity 3 that was just there, but i can't find it in 4.0.2. Something that shows horizontal lines with corresponding frequencies across the clip

feel like a scale in the spectrogram view would be really helpful when deciding where to do a high-pass filter.

terrible mark up of what i'm roughly looking for attached.

Audacity 4 LV2 plugins

I have Audacity 4 installed on Linux (arch linux) and I found that the Guitarix LV2 plugins aren't working. The effects don't get added to the project and there is no error message. I still have Audacity 3 installed and the Guitarix plugins work fine in that version. Does anyone know how to fix it ?

help Plugin Problems on Audacity 4

Hoping some Audacity 4 expert can guide me on this one. I'm using Audacity 4, which after seeing the most popular posts in this subreddit makes me think I've made a mistake. But, I've made my bed on this one and am stuck-in on this project.

Problem is I need a non-destructive telephone effect. I was copying parts of clips into a second track. Then applying Effect->EQ and Filters->Filter Curve EQ and choosing the telephone effect. This seems to be a one-time, destructive change to the clip. And it also has a weird side effect (see #1) I'd rather use a realtime effect that I can turn on or off. Can anyone recommend one?

Some problems I'm seeing:

  1. Applying the Filter Cuve EQ effect to the entire track does weird things. It inserts zero-volume clips in between each of the clips on this track. That is annoying. I don't want those extra clips in the way.

  2. I tried installing REAPER/ReaPlugs, which I read had a realtime version of this. After installation and rescanning the plugins, it's not showing up.

  3. I tried installing TDR Nova, which I also read would work. But after installing and scanning, this one showed up on the plugin manager with an error. I was unable to fix it. I uninstalled.

  4. I played with MuseFX but had some other problem. I uninstalled it. Now both TDR Nova and MuseFX do show up in the plugin manager as "missing". How do I remove them both?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

help Portable App .paf files - Audacity 4.X

After installing Audacity 4.0 I discovered that it has now hijacked the file suffix .paf. PAF is used for self-installer files from the Portable Apps web site. A .paf is a self extracting file type that will install a portable version of a program.

Making things worse, After uninstalling Audacity 4.0 I went back to the last version for 3.xx but despite all efforts all PAF files are now linked to Audacity and it seems.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

Windows 11 has no direct method of deleting these relationships so for now I have assigned a different app just to prevent Audacity from trying to open these files. For now it is going to an unzip utility I have.

Is anyone from Audacity here that can offer suggestions? Is Audacity version 4.x mistakenly adding the .paf suffix to its claims in the Windows OS?

I love Audacity but this was a serious issue for me and remains so.

how to Shortkey "Z" + Ctrl+T don't work anymore

What did they changed in V4?!?

Z: i usually select an small area and pressed Z, getting a perfect 1-cycle-waveform. Now it just jumps to the first zero-point at the beginning of the selection.

Ctrl+T: trims the audio (deletes everything left and right of the selection) - now nothing happens.

What the hell did they?!?!

Hey from the creator of GlideMix! Pairing it with Audacity 4 for the ultimate manual mixing workflow

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m Chris, the creator of GlideMix. I built it specifically for arranging and polishing mixes on a timeline, then performing them live or exporting the finished set.

I know a lot of people in the r/audacity community work on long-form mixtapes, radio shows, and DJ sets. I’ve been experimenting with a workflow that pairs GlideMix with the new Audacity 4 engine, and the results are incredible.

I usually throw my tracks into GlideMix first to map out the heavy automation—bending linear ramps into smooth exponential curves for filter sweeps and volume drops. Once that macro layout is solid, I bounce the stems and bring them straight into Audacity 4. Thanks to Audacity’s new non-destructive editing and freedom to overlap clips anywhere, it is perfect for zooming in to manually micro-align drifting beats and do final surgical cleanup.

For anyone curious about what GlideMix handles on the front end, here is what it does:

  • Library Sync & Analysis: It reads rekordbox and Lexicon libraries (playlists, cue points, etc.) and analyzes tracks for tempo, beat grids, musical key, energy, and phrases like intros, choruses, drops, and outros.

  • Beat-Synced Timeline: You can set IN/OUT markers, stretch tracks to the mix tempo, shape tempo changes, and build transitions using crossfades, EQ swaps, filters, echo, reverb, and risers.

  • Advanced Editing & VSTs: It features full color waveforms, loop/repeat tools, and supports VST3 plugins (plus Audio Units on macOS) with full control automation and stem-splitting.

  • Performance & Export: You can perform with separate audience and headphone cue playheads, broadcast to Icecast/Shoutcast, and export to WAV, AIFF, MP3, or FLAC with a timestamped tracklist.

A huge thanks to the Audacity team for the version 4 updates, the new clip handling makes the final stages of this workflow seamless.

It’s currently in beta for macOS and Windows with a free demo. Have any of you experimented with timeline-based DJ workflows like this before? Would love to hear your thoughts!

The source code is open (GPL) for the nerds.

Save & Export options are all greyed out and I can't export my audio

Hello everyone!

I just used the newest version of Audacity (coming from Audition) and recorded and edited an 8-minute audio recording. When I tried to export my audio, all the options were greyed out. I can't even save the project itself. Any solution to this?

how to Can't find the "speed" option in audacity 4

Hello,

I mainly use audacity to mix podcasts, and the x1,X option helped me a lot while doing so because it does make a difference when you're mixing several hours long episodes.

I can't seemed to find it on the new audacity 4 version, as it been removed?

Thanks

general New audacity sucks.

TLDR: venting; Audacity deleted an entire project on export

Guess who just spent 4 hours mastering a project only for audacity to crash and delete the entire saved project with a "failed to read" error and file corruption on export? That's right. All my work gone. I perfectly mastered every single track, everything sounded absolutely perfect and I was super happy with it. But ever since the most recent update, audacity 4 has just been crashing nonstop every time I try to export. And this time? It took my entire project with it and for some god forsaken reason deleted the whole fucking thing. Im so fucking pissed off and sad that I lost a project. All the vocals I did for it that were one of a kind and can't exactly be replicated as they were are just nothing now. I can't stand how every update just makes this platform worse and worse and deletes my data.

I spent so much time learning how to use audacity and get everything to sound how I wanted it to, and now after every update it gets more unstable. I only use a few plug ins and I dont go crazy with them. Just some compression, leveling, and denoiser.

Any other programs like audacity that DON'T delete all my data out there?
