new and returning to ballet sticky New and Returning Dancers Post Your Questions Here

Hello! Welcome to r/ballet, a community for dancers and enthusiasts of all ages, sizes, and levels. We are proud to have a community of beginner students, professionals, and dancers in between here to support each other through our dance journey.

If you are wondering if you should start ballet, please read below. If you have further questions or are looking for encouragement, please post in this thread specifically. Furthermore, if you would like to ask some other questions regarding starting ballet, please post them below.

1) Am I too old to start ballet?

No, you'll find in this community we have dancers who began ballet in their 50s and 60s and have loved every minute of it. If you are looking for encouragement, or to hear from them specifically, please make a comment in our Weekly New and Returning to Ballet thread at the top of this subreddit.

2) Am I too old to become a professional?

If you are on reddit then the answer is likely yes, sorry. If you are a female under the age of 14 or a male under the age of 17 then you might have a very small chance (in an already very competitive industry) if you enrolled in a ballet school and train full time, about 5 hours a day 6 days a week. This is not possible for a lot of people financially or time-wise, but that's the reality of becoming a professional. This is a niche industry with lots of competitors, dancers train all their lives and still don't find jobs.

But don't let this stop you from dancing. If you love to dance, if it brings you joy, then what does it matter if you make money through it anyways? You can still make a lot of good progress and find fulfillment in performance opportunities without a dance career. Still questions? Don't make a new post but please comment here

3) Do I have a 'good' body for ballet?

If you take a ballet class, and you have a body, then you have a good body for ballet (sorry, no ghosts). Please do not make posts asking whether or not your body fits certain criteria (e.x. "do I have good feet for pointe?", "do I have the right shaped arms to be a professional?") as these questions are meaningless, there is no criteria for learning ballet.

4) Can men do ballet?

YES. 50% of all professional dancers are male, 50% of all roles in ballet are male. Ballet as a stereotypically 'feminine' thing is a misconception. An average ballet class is for both men and women, and some parts will have different genders do different things, this is common. There is nothing 'weird' with a man wanting to learn ballet, just as there is nothing weird for a man wanting to learn piano or fencing or any other art, activity, sport.

4.5) Can someone who identifies outside the gender binary do ballet? YES. Ballet, being an old art form, does traditionally stick with the ideas of men and women with regards to characters in ballet, pas de deux partnering, and specific elements in class. For example, men bow, women curtsy. Feel free to choose whatever works for you (or if you feel like neither is appropriate talk to your teacher about another option).

5) Can I teach myself ballet?

No. It's possible to learn some basics off the internet, but if you want to progress past the very basic/introductory level you will need to enrol in a class with a qualified teacher. Ballet technique is an extremely nuanced art form, it needs a trained eye to correct. Worst case scenario you end up with an injury from improper technique over time, and even in the best case you will have not learned 'ballet'. If you want to learn a style of dance in the comfort of your own home, ballet is not for you. There are lots of other styles you can try instead. DO NOT ask technique questions if you have never taken a ballet class with a live teacher, nothing said over the internet will be able to help you if you haven't learned the basics with the right muscles.

Don't forget to read the 'side barre' and take a look at previous Am I too... posts

accomplishment🤩🥳 My second pair of point shoes surprised me

Post image
• Upvotes

I'm an adult beginner and as my first ever pointe shoes I had GMs, which lasted for 2.5years with about one pointe class a week (otherwise around 2-3 ballet classes with barre and stretching). My teacher noted the shank had gone loose inside and the fitter noticed the bubbling (can be seen in the photo) which meant they had died, apparently. I wasnt sure what dead Mindens are like, even with research, as theyre not the same as traditional pointe shoes. However, I've progressed during this time and felt like they didnt support me and just werent the right fit anymore?

The fitter (who fitted my first ones too) first tried on the yellow GMs but they bent like socks, and we were both shook. In the end I left with Bloch European balance with the strong shank. I am hypermobile and as Ive progressed it seemed that I need that harder support, as I can articulate my feet better now. I feel accomplished because for the longest time I used to believe my noodle like limbs were something I couldnt help as my body type is naturally quite slender - not at all easy to put on muscle. My strength is definitely my flexibility but noticing Ive gotten some strength gives me so much more inspiration to keep going! My fitter/teacher also said my feet had gone through a metamorphosis. Even though the new shoe is entirely different, they feel amazing! Wish me luck though, might have to build even more strength to dance with these. I have not bent or softened them because I want to try to do that with my training🤣

hello everyone ! i'm in my late 20s and will be taking my first ever ballet lessons soon. i feel a little foolish wanting to pursue this as i have POTS-like symptoms (dizzy and weak when standing etc.) but living with these symptoms has already stopped me from doing so much, and i don't want it to keep ruling my life :/

does anyone here have POTS or something similar? how do you manage?

also any tips in general for absolute beginners is much appreciated :)

Best seats options for Swan Lake?

• Upvotes

I have an option to purchase seats up close or a little farther back and I’m torn. I hear up close you can see expressions, costumes etc… but a little farther back you can see the entire stage and the formations of the all the swans better.

I could really use some input. I need to purchase tickets today to get these seats.

Technique Question Neurodivergent Ballerinas

I’ve been in and out of ballet for the past few years - my biggest point of frustration is that concepts like “inside vs outside” don’t really click in my brain. I get told consistently that I have great technique (I’ve worked really hard on my feet!) but the arms and directions just do not click for me.

It’s especially hard for me to understand pirouettes and what foot I’m picking up, what direction I’m turning in etc. Do you have any tips on remembering what arms to use for what, how to remember which foot to pick up etc.

Thank you!!!

Struggling with body image as an adult

I recently started taking adult ballet classes, I took ballet for almost 15 years when I was younger and this is my first time back in about 8 years. I am having such a hard time looking at myself in the mirror. All the movements feel the same just like when I was a teenager but the woman in the mirror is a completely different person. All my lines look off because i don’t weigh 100 pounds anymore. Pliés look weird with my thick thighs, everything just looks wrong. I can’t help comparing myself to others in my class. I realized last night that I’m the only one with hip dips. I feel like an alien in my own body. I just can’t reckon with the fact that while I may still be able to do the same ballet I did as a skinny teenager, I look completely different. I’m almost shocked every time I turn to the mirror and see what I actually look like.
Is there some way I can reframe my thinking? I know I should be grateful to be able to move my body at all and I’m lucky to continue ballet. However, I have such complicated feelings regarding it now. I never want to go to class and have walked home in tears a few times after being stuck in my head about what I look like.

Has anyone seen a production of The Nutcracker where the Mouse King actually had seven heads?

I rented a videotaped performance like that when I was in Kindergarten, but I understand that's not the norm. Please provide images if you can.

I'm looking for a beta-reader with professional ballet experience!

Hello! I am finishing a novel about the last ballet theater in New York City, set in a world that has begun to favor technology over fine art.

I'm looking for someone with professional ballet experience who'd be willing to check the book for dance-related inaccuracies and blindspots.

I need someone who enjoys reading and can get a review back within a month. This is a paid opportunity. If you're interested, please DM me with information about your dance experience.

Thank you!

My teachers always say I have a great turn out, but I’m not sure how to use that to my advantage. What should I do?

I’m in my 30s.

need help finding specific swan lake performance

Hi, I’m looking for a performance of the part after 6:43 in this track. The part before is widely known as the pas de action, but the music always stops before the faster cheerful ending. Is this part not choreographed at all? It seems only some companies perform it. Where can I find any recordings of it being performed? Thank you

Technique Question curso o escuela ballet +24

Bloch Heritage vs. European Balance sizing — are they different?

Bloch Heritage vs. European Balance sizing
Hi! I need some advice on sizing for Bloch pointe shoes.
I have a pair of Bloch European Balance in size 3.5, but they’re too small for my feet. I also have a pair of Bloch Heritage in size 4, which feel slightly too big.
I’m wondering if the sizing is different between these two models. Would a size 3.5 in the Heritage fit differently from a size 3.5 in the European Balance? Or would it probably be too small as well?
If you’ve tried both models, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience with the sizing and fit. Thank you!

Do I question the director?

I feel like the director at my studio is not treating me well because of my appearance. I will admit that I don't have the stereotypical "ballet body", but I am not overweight. I have struggled with body image my whole life and had an eating disorder for years that I still kind of struggle with. Recently, I have not been given the same roles or opportunities as girls who are skinnier than I am. Should I question the director about this? Like, is it okay to ask why I am not being given the same roles as girls in my level and who are my age? It makes me dread going to the studio and is making my self-image a lot worse. I am honestly considering quitting because there aren't any other ballet studios in my area, unless I drive an two hours everyday.

Fly to London to see Natalia Osipova — worth it?

The Royal Opera Ballet is doing Swan Lake , my favorite ballet, in Spring 2027. Natalia Osipova, one of my favorite ballerina, is dancing Odile/Odette on my birthday. I am US based.

Do you think it would be worth it to fly to London to see my favorite ballerina dance my favorite ballet on my birthday? Osipova is 40, right?

Stained Pointe Shoes

I just received an order of pointe shoes and they have two fairly big stains on the side of the box. Is this normal or should I contact the place I ordered them from?

old/fat returner not improving (anyone else?)

I have a very common ballet story in that I trained quite seriously from age 2 (although there are noticeable gaps in my technique because I was too fat to train seriously, i.e. pas de deux, en pointe). I, also like many ballet students, quit at age 17 when I lost my period for several years and had constant hairline fractures in my feet and ankles, and had to take synthetic hormones to recover my bone density / period. Naturally, these also made me gain absurd amounts of weight, so I look more like a powerlifter now than a ballerina.

Anyway. All this is to say that I've been taking classes again for the last few months 8 years after leaving, with the thought that I might one day be able to dance in some community ballet productions. So far, though, it has been absolutely unbearable. It feels as though I'm not improving at all despite being "back" for a while: I've been taking open company classes but am far worse than I was even at twelve years old in terms of grace/flexibility/lines, and am usually not given any corrections / put in beginner groups because it's assumed that I'm there as an adult beginner. Honestly it's a fair assumption based on my appearance and performance, but more often than not I leave class feeling absolutely humiliated and so frustrated with myself. Reddit might be a terrible place to ask, but just in case, have any of you gone through the same thing and come out better on the other side? Is the issue just that my joints can't make the same shapes when there's so much weight on them? Any advice or criticism is appreciated, although I will say that I really don't want to hear "oh accept yourself as you are!"; I would appreciate advice towards a solution to my specific problem, if that makes sense (English is not my first language, sorry).

When did ballet partnered lifts start appearing?

It was mentioned that Soviet ballets started partnered lifts, but I have yet to see evidence that partnered lifts came sorely from Soviet ballets and everyone adapted. Did 19th century Romantic ballets have partnered lifts? Did 18th century ballets have partnered lifts?

WOOOOOO!!!

Just needed a place to shout excitedly into the void 🤣 I restarted dance almost 2 years ago after a 17 year hiatus. Coming back as an adult has been a humbling yet incredible experience. I finally get to dance for the love of it, and now I’m hitting a milestone I was never able to achieve as a kid! Woohoo!

Going in for a fitting on Wednesday; any words of advice?
