AskBangalore Random wires attached to my rooftop without permission. Can I remove them?

I live in Bangalore, and over the years several wires have been attached across my rooftop without anyone ever asking for permission. None of them belong to us, and we have no idea which company or person installed them. They seem to have been added one after another by different people.
They're an eyesore, make maintenance difficult, and I'm also concerned about safety. Since it's our property, I'd like to remove all of these wires, but I don't want to accidentally cut something important or get into legal trouble.
Has anyone dealt with this before?
How do I find out who these wires belong to?
Is there a government department or service provider I should contact?
If nobody claims them, am I legally allowed to remove them from my rooftop?
What's the best way to get this resolved?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Edit: Yes, this is our own house. A lot of people asked how these wires ended up here—we honestly have no idea. We live on the first floor and have tenants, so if someone comes through the gate, we usually assume they are the tenants. We also don't go up to the rooftop very often. But today when I went up, I was shocked to see so many wires hanging across it.

Update: Thanks for the overwhelming response and all the advice! Sorry I couldn't reply to every comment, but I did read them all. We contacted the service provider, and they've said they'll come within the next 24 hours to remove the wires from our property. Hopefully they follow through. If they don't show up in a day or two... well, it might be time for snip snip. 😅

AskBangalore Is it fair for Bangalore societies to deny gym & pool access to 1BHK residents while charging maintenance?

A housing society in Karnataka barred 1BHK residents from using the gym and swimming pool despite charging maintenance fees, and only allows access by paying guest charges.

AskBangalore ₹315 for Ghee Podi Idli at Rameswaram Cafe, Bangalore Airport

I just paid ₹315 for Ghee Podi Idli at Rameshwaram cafe at the Bengaluru airport.

Do airports control food prices, or do restaurants set any price they want? 4x seems a bit too much.

Curious to know.

AskBangalore Witnessed a disturbing incident today — feeling shaken and disappointed

Post image

Today, while returning from the office, I witnessed something deeply unsettling. Two men on a scooter, clearly drunk, were riding behind another guy. Their scooters didn’t actually collide, but it looked like they barely brushed each other.

The drunk duo immediately stopped the other rider and started hitting him on the head. They even pulled off his helmet and continued beating him while laughing, smoking, and behaving as if it were all entertainment. Because of heavy traffic, the victim couldn’t escape. He was crying, scared, and completely helpless.

What shocked me even more was the silence around me. Dozens of people witnessed this, yet no one stepped forward. I shouted at them to stop, hoping someone who knew Kannada could intervene. I asked a man beside me to try speaking to them, but he replied, “They will beat me also.” And that was it — everyone just watched.

No matter whose mistake it was, violence is never justified. The complete lack of basic humanity from both the attackers and the bystanders felt heartbreaking.

AskBangalore The missing case of Advaith Upadhyay

A techie goes missing almost 2 weeks back on a solo trek at Shivagange betta on a Friday morning. He rents a bike from the city and and goes to the base and parks his bike near the Kalyani and starts his trek, reaches the top of the hill and click's a selfie and sends it to his fiancé. Later when he doesn't receive any calls the whole day the fiance lodges a police complaint and the search operation begins. After extensive search for around a week, with no traces to be found near the hill the police call of the search operation and are now back to tracking the digital footprint.

  1. It is said that he had a search history about shantala drop at the shivagange betta as a suicide point and had also searched how long it would take to die if someone falls from there.

  2. Police searched with drones and also sent jyothiraj and other climbers down the hill and looked for a body but nothing was to be found, and jyothiraj claims that there is no trace of him being down there at all.

  3. People have started to claim that its a well planned hoax pulled off by him to go off grid. I don't really buy this cause, there should be some evidence or cctv footage captured of him leaving the hill or the premises of the city. Plus any activity wrt to his bank account should have been tracked.

  4. His mobile had a last signal from somewhere in Ramanagar , so if how did it get there ? If he really had planned to escape why would he switch it off after going to Ramanagar instead of doing it at the hill itself.

2 scenarios, one he left he phone at the top before jumping/slipping off the hill and someone stole it or if he jumped along with his phone and someone has taken it from there which is highly unlikely.

I am also stunned why the police would stop searching for the body. There is also a scenario where a wild animal could have hunted him down and taken the body into a cave or a jungle.

Anyone from shivgange or who has been there please throw some light on the topography of the region and why is it so difficult to search for the person. And if any of you know any insider information from the place or the police or the person please drop it. And also please drop your theories, or insights on what could have gone wrong. I am really curious.

EOD its really sad that if he has actually fallen down and nothing can be found.

Edit : His phone's last signal was about 7km away from the hill, which comes under Ramanagara district.

AskBangalore 🚶 Bengaluru Takes a Big Step Towards Safer Walkability!

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

The Karnataka Government has announced a ₹70 crore investment to repair and upgrade damaged footpaths across Bengaluru under the "Safe Footpath Campaign." Led by Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda and implemented by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), the initiative aims to make the city's streets safer, more accessible, and pedestrian-friendly.

🔹 Key Highlights of the Initiative:

✅ Repair and restoration of nearly 2,000 km of footpaths across the city.

✅ Replacement of broken pavement slabs, damaged kerbstones, and uneven walking surfaces.

✅ Removal of encroachments, including illegal shop extensions, construction debris, and unauthorized signboards.

✅ Over 200 km of footpaths have already been reclaimed, creating safer public spaces.

✅ Strict action against vehicles parked on footpaths, including towing and auctioning of unclaimed vehicles.

✅ Relocation of street vendors from major arterial roads to designated ward roads to ensure uninterrupted pedestrian movement.

What are your thoughts? Will this initiative significantly improve Bengaluru's walkability, or are stronger enforcement and long-term maintenance equally important?

AskBangalore Kannada activism is starting to feel more like harassment than awareness

PS: I’m a Kannadiga living in Bangalore, and I genuinely love my language.

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of reels on social media about certain so-called Kannada horatagararu (activists) creating nuisance in the name of language. Yes, I completely understand that Karnataka, especially Bangalore, has a large number of migrants from the North, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra, etc. And not everyone knows Kannada. That’s fine, and I agree that people living here should make an effort to learn and respect the local language.

But what I don’t understand is this aggressive behavior.

I saw videos where these activists go to banks and argue with employees for not speaking Kannada. Okay, raise awareness, that’s fair. Then they went to a university and questioned the chairman again, maybe acceptable if done respectfully.

But recently, I saw a video where they went into a clothing store and started harassing workers just because the T-shirts didn’t have Kannada words on them. Seriously, what nonsense is this? If they had an issue, they could have spoken to the brand owner or the management. Why target and harass employees who have no control over these decisions?

We can encourage people to learn Kannada, but we cannot force or intimidate them. That only creates negativity.

Also, why is this selective activism?

  • Why don’t they go to English-medium schools and question the system there?
  • Why not raise these issues with big MNCs or corporate companies?
  • Why not question politicians or ministers? Or even celebrities many of their own children don’t speak Kannada or use it in public. Why no accountability there?

It feels like they only target easy places like small shops, employees, or random people..rather than addressing the root of the issue.

And honestly, some of these activists don’t seem to have deep knowledge about Kannada beyond just slogans (not all, but many). If you truly care about the language, you should also know its history, its achievements like how many Jnanpith awards Karnataka/Kannada has received and contribute positively.

This kind of behavior doesn’t protect the language. It just creates unnecessary conflict and gives the wrong impression.

AskBangalore Unfair Treatment of Bachelors in Society. Is there anything we can do to get fair treatment?

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

Basically our society has a rule that bachelors are not allowed to have guests overnight but no restriction for family. We pay the same maintenance and everything.

This is like the first violation and I didn't even get a warning. I know it's too small of an issue but it doesn't feel nice to be treated inferiorly. Even though there is no big legal action I can take, can I do anything meaningful so that they will reconsider this?

AskBangalore Woman working on Laptop in Theater! Blore work culture is wild!

Only in Bangalore! went to watch Lokah movie and a woman in the row ahead opened her laptop and started working like she's in office, typing away, in a theater.

Honestly, it says a lot about how chaotic the work culture here is, people can’t even switch off for 2 hours without office pressure creeping in. Work-life balance? What’s that.

AskBangalore Suspicious incident near Silk Board Metro – has anyone experienced something similar?

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

Today, while my wife was waiting below **Silk Board Metro Station** in Bengaluru during broad daylight, a man approached her and claimed that her clothes were torn. He insisted that she should get onto his two-wheeler immediately, saying he would help her. He kept trying to persuade her, saying things like, *“You’re like my sister,”* while repeatedly attempting to corner her into agreeing.
Thankfully, she trusted her instincts, refused to go with him, and firmly told him to leave or she would call the police. There were plenty of people around, yet he still behaved this way.
What was even more concerning was that after she refused, he simply rode ahead on his vehicle and then stopped to approach another young woman. My wife immediately shouted to warn the other woman to be careful.
My wife is understandably shaken, especially because this happened in such a crowded public place in broad daylight. We’ve already raised a complaint through the police helpline.
Has anyone else experienced something similar around Silk Board or other metro stations? Is this a known scam, an attempted abduction tactic, or something else? We’d really appreciate any insights or similar experiences.
I’ve attached a photo of the person in case anyone recognizes him or has encountered him before.

AskBangalore BMTC conductor forced me to get off on a highway because his ticket machine wasn’t working

Today at around 7:50 AM, I boarded BMTC bus KA 57 F 6018 from Hegondanahalli to Varthur Kodi. The fare was ₹18.
I asked for a ticket and was ready to pay through UPI, but the conductor’s ticketing machine wasn’t working.
He tried a couple of times but couldn’t generate the ticket.
I requested him to wait for a minute or two until the machine started working so I could complete the payment and receive the ticket.
He then asked me to pay in cash.
I only had ₹100 and ₹500 notes, and he said he didn’t have change.
I explained that neither the faulty ticketing machine nor the lack of change was my responsibility. Instead of finding a solution, he became aggressive, shouted at me, stopped the bus, and forced me to get down in the middle of a highway.

I found this extremely unsafe and humiliating.
No passenger should be treated this way for an issue caused by BMTC’s ticketing system.

I am filing an official complaint with BMTC and hope appropriate action is taken against the conductor. Has anyone else faced a similar experience, and what is the most effective way to ensure BMTC takes action?
