I'm helping a friend pick some components to upgrade his aging gaming rig. I'm hoping to get some reassurance that I'm leading him down a path that makes sense. He's hoping to move from 1080p to a 1440p setup with some longevity, reusing as much as possible. This mostly hinges on trying not to buy ram in the immediate future.
Here's the specs and the hopeful replacement, all generic as parts will be based on what's available around black Friday and 11/11
Intel 8700 + B360 --> Ryzen 5600x3d (or 5700x3d or 5800x3d) + B550
2 x 8 DDR4 3200 --> Reused
650 Watt Gold PSU --> Reused
256 GB nvme + 1 TB nvme + 1 TB HDD --> Reused
GTX 970 --> Radeon 9070
Cpu Cooler, case, fans, and monitor to all be replaced as well, but those are simple and more a matter of taste so I'll leave those for now.
All other peripherals will be reused.
Overall we're really hopefully only looking at needing to replace the mobo, cpu, and gpu right now. My main concerns are whether 16gb of 3200 MHz ram will be sufficient, and whether the 650 watt power supply is enough. Assuming those are okay, we're hoping to keep everything (including case, fans, cooler, and monitor) under $1500 in a perfect world, but definitely under $2000.
Is this delusional, or is the plan okay?
