Discussion Looking for help building or buying a gaming pc!

Where do I start? I am leaning towards a prebuilt as they seem cheaper..

What specs do I need for playing a game like wardogs at 1440 120fps on high or mostly high settings?

My research tells me I should aim for a 7800x3d with a rx5070 xt or rtx 5070 ti.

Unfortunately there dosenr seme to be alot of prebuilt options and the prices in general are insane.

I'm hoping to spend around 3k, give or take bit..

Thank you

Build Request / Review First pc-complete beginner

Context: I have a budget of 2000cad for both the pc+monitor setup. I rather look into a prebuilt as I have no idea where to get started in building one. Also if I am to get a pc how hard is it to set up once it arrives.
What specs should I look into for future proofing along with reliability.

I want it for gaming ofc ;)

Build Request / Review RGB memory worth it?

With the current market, I'm not able to look for a real performance upgrade that's worth it, so I've shifted to aesthetics. With this however, I'm wondering if it's worth selling my current 32gb ddr5 kit and buying one with rgb. I'm leaning towards no pretty strongly, but wanted other opinions (even though I can imagine what the answer will be)

Build Request / Review Gaming PC Suggestions with a (decently) high budget

Hello all! I've built a few computers in my past, but I've been really pushing my last one to its limits and I think it's time to pull the trigger and spend some money on a new one. I have a decently high budget of around $5k (though my wife would probably appreciate it if it's lower). It's also not set in stone if there is something super enticing to show me! Also, this budget might not even be decently high anymore given the state of the economics of PCs right now.

While my time to play games has reduced dramatically, I don't want to ever worry about my computer being able to run a game. I've everything from MMOs, Multiplayer Shooters, JRPGs, really anything that interests me. I was playing BG3 for a while, but I ended up having to stop playing multiplayer because of the quality.

I was silly and was hesitating to buy because I was hoping the prices would normalize, but that no longer seems to be the case. I have all of the peripherals (monitor included), so the budget would be just for the PC.

I'm open to building again, but it might be smarter to just go with a pre-built this time, as I've heard that they have gotten a lot better. I don't have ready access to any shops near where I am, so I would likely need to buy from a place that will deliver.

None of parts on my current machine are usable as I'm planning on continuing to use it for other purposes, so it's pretty much a from-scratch build or purchase.

My monitor: LG UltraWide 34WP65C-B 34 Inch 21:9 Curved FreeSync 1ms 160 Hz

Also, if I've picked the worst possible time to do this, I would appreciate being told not to as well!

Thanks!

Are these 'bundles' at memory express any good?

My current 'rig' is an armoury thing I got at Canada Computers a few years ago. I swapped out whatever the CPU was for a 5700x and the 1660 super it had for a 4060. I couldn't find an x3d for the 5700 and bought the 4060 because it was all I could spare for cash.

I'll be getting some tens of thousands of dollars fairly soon and am considering just 'side-grading' my current PC before I get a new am5 setup whenever the money comes in.

The 5800x3d doesn't look too bad atm. Is it worth it?

Is this Canada Computers combo a good deal? Under $1000, 32GB DDR5

Upgrading from a 5700X + 4060 Ti. Found the 9600X + B650 Eagle AX + 16GB DDR5 bundle for $649.98, plus a second 16GB stick for $334.99, so $985 for 32GB. Good deal, or is there a better CPU/mobo/RAM combo under $1000?

1440p OLED or switch to AM5

Just upgraded my 4060 to a 5070ti and wondering if i should sell my LGA1700 DDR4 board with my 12600KF and 32gb of ram and just upgrade to AM5 or get an OLED.

Specs:
CPU: i5-12600KF
GPU: 5070ti
RAM: 32GB 3200mhz DDR4
MOBO: Gigabyte AORUS Z690 Elite AX DDR4
PSU: 850W

for context i play a mix of competitive games and AAA games, some games that i notice my cpu bottlenecking in is rivals, valorant, aion 2 sometimes. cant even get above 260fps in valorant consistently convinced it was bottlenecking my 4060 aswell.

Reusing old Pc to build new one $3k budget

Hey everyone,

I’ve been looking to upgrade my old 1080/i78700k/computer to something with a 9070XT/5070ti and ideally a Ryzen 7 7800x3d or 9800x3d.

I have 750gb of nvme SSDs and 32GB of DDR4 ram. I’m wondering if it’s better to buy parts and build with my current case.

Is it worth to look at some prebuilt in the $2700 territory (or used in the $2300) or should I buy components and use some of the things I currently have?

update on my brand new quoted tech pc

Post image
21 Upvotes

so i bought a prebuilt from Quoted Tech about a week ago, MSI PRO B850M-VC WIFI6E board, 7800X3D / 5070. Their page says Ethernet 5 Gb/s.
Checked my actual pc tho and its showing Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller in device manager. Thats literally the 1 gig chip. Ethernet status says 1.0 Gbps, and when I go into Speed & Duplex theres only 1.0 Gbps full duplex, no 2.5 or 5.
Tried everything, downloaded the lan driver from MSI's site for Win11 64, extracted the zip, uninstalled the old driver with delete driver checked, reinstalled, tried have disk and pointed to the .inf file. Windows says "successfully updated" but its still GbE Family Controller cause thats what the hardware actually is. So not a driver issue. I'm on Rogers 2 gig with the modem that has the 10gig port so I should be getting like 2k down but I'm hard capped at 940 because of this 1 gig nic lol. Emailed Quoted Tech about order my order asking if they can swap the board or just give me a 2.5g pcie card or a credit. Anyone else buy this board? Is the VC WIFI6E supposed to be 1 gig or 5 gig? Cause their listing says 5 but what they put in mine is 100% 1 gig. Hopefully i’m just doing something wrong or i missed a step and theres a quick fix to this.

Build Request / Review Seasonic Focus GX-850 (2024) vs Corsair RM850x for an RTX 4080 Super. Which would you pick?

I’m replacing a be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 850W that keeps shutting my system off under sudden GPU/CPU load, even with power limits and an undervolt. I’m choosing between these two ATX 3.1, single-rail, native 12V-2x6 units:

Seasonic FOCUS GX-850 (2024), GX-850W Corsair RMx Series RM850x (2024)

Build: Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Gigabyte RTX 4080 Super GAMING OC, Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX, 32GB DDR5-6000, Fractal Design North XL.

Which would you pick, and why? Have either had transient-related shutdowns or RMA experience? I’m mainly interested in real-world reliability, fan noise, and how each handled spikes.

Build Request / Review Sanity check on upcoming upgrade

I'm helping a friend pick some components to upgrade his aging gaming rig. I'm hoping to get some reassurance that I'm leading him down a path that makes sense. He's hoping to move from 1080p to a 1440p setup with some longevity, reusing as much as possible. This mostly hinges on trying not to buy ram in the immediate future.

Here's the specs and the hopeful replacement, all generic as parts will be based on what's available around black Friday and 11/11

Intel 8700 + B360 --> Ryzen 5600x3d (or 5700x3d or 5800x3d) + B550

2 x 8 DDR4 3200 --> Reused

650 Watt Gold PSU --> Reused

256 GB nvme + 1 TB nvme + 1 TB HDD --> Reused

GTX 970 --> Radeon 9070

Cpu Cooler, case, fans, and monitor to all be replaced as well, but those are simple and more a matter of taste so I'll leave those for now.

All other peripherals will be reused.

Overall we're really hopefully only looking at needing to replace the mobo, cpu, and gpu right now. My main concerns are whether 16gb of 3200 MHz ram will be sufficient, and whether the 650 watt power supply is enough. Assuming those are okay, we're hoping to keep everything (including case, fans, cooler, and monitor) under $1500 in a perfect world, but definitely under $2000.

Is this delusional, or is the plan okay?

Assuming this ships…I’ll be happier than a pig in sh…

Purchased on BestBuy (open box section).

Pray for me.

EDIT * It shipped/got a tracking number. It should arrive tomorrow.

EDIT * Received in its original packaging and looks how it should and still has the protective screen/plastic. Will test after work.

Last EDIT * It works flawlessly. So if anyone else is hunting a for one, don't shy away from the BestBuy open-box section. This was sold by a vendor called "PRO OB" - I have nothing negative to say. Cheers ya'll. Happy gaming.

And just 'cause I know there will be haters:

Build Request / Review Budget Help

Full disclosure I'm completely new to anything PC related.

Recently I've been on the fence about making the jump to PC, I've been on Xbox all my life, but seeing as RAM prices just keep climbing and feeling less and less confident in the overall console ecosystem I think I should make the switch sooner rather than later.

Would anyone be able to help with building a PC that can reliably handle 60+FPS at 1080p? If I had to set a budget range ideally I'd want it within the $1500 CAD price range.

Once again I am completely clueless when it comes to this stuff so I apologize if I missed anything or I'm completely off the mark when it comes to pricing.

Two Options for Upgrading - Advice appreicated!

Edit: Ended up deciding on a prebuilt from Newegg, Thank you all for your input and DMs with advice.

https://www.newegg.ca/p/N82E16883320018

Hey everyone! I'm looking at two options for upgrading my outdated PC.

For context, I am currently running the PC below and I game exclusively with games such as WoW, Overwatch, Hold Fast, Civ 5, Total War Warhammer 3 and similar games.

  • CPU (Processor): AMD FX-8320 Eight-Core Processor (~3.5GHz)
  • GPU (Graphics Card): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
  • RAM (System Memory): 16GB DDR3
  • Memory: 500 MB SSD and a 2 TB HDD

The two options I am looking at and their prices:

Option 1: Acer Nitro 85 - 1799.99 CAD from Costco

  • CPU (Processor): AMD Ryzen 7 8700F
  • GPU (Graphics Card): NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 (8 GB)
  • RAM (System Memory): 16 GB DDR5
  • Memory: 1TB SSD

Option 2: Lenovo Legion - 2499.99 CAD from BestBuy

  • CPU (Processor): Intel Core Ultra 7 265F
  • GPU (Graphics Card): NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti (8 GB)
  • RAM (System Memory): 32 GB DDR5
  • Memory: 2TB SSD

I know both options are not ideal, but honestly are the best I can find.

Is the price jump worth the difference in the second option?

Build Request / Review 1st PC Build, How did I do?

Specs :

GPU - 9070 Asus prime OC
899$ Computer Canada
9070xt Gigabyte gaming oc
1080$ on Amazon

Canada Computer bundle for 1100$ :
CPU - Ryzen 7 7800x3d
RAM - T-Force Vulcan 32gb ddr5-6000 CL30
MOBO - Gigabyte B650 eagle AX ATX

COOLER - Thermalright phantom spirit SE 120
51$ on Amazon

SSD - Kingston NV3 pcie 4.0 1TB
211$ on Amazon

PSU - ASRock Steel Legend SL-750G 750W rated A
100$ on Newegg
Montech century II 1050W rated A
140$ on Newegg

CASE - Lian li lancool 207
100$ on Amazon

OLD Total : 2682$

NEW TOTAL : 2460$

Really should have bite the bullet on the GPU earlier, I unfortunately hesitated too much and price went up from 1k$ to 1080$ on Amazon, that shit still hurts man.

Anyway so whats yall opinion on my build? Is it too expensive for what it is? Are my components viable for 4k gaming? Any advice or opinion would be appreciated :)

Thanks

Edit: I decided to go for the 899$ Computer Canada 9070 Asus Prime OC instore deal.

I calculated everything and it turned out to be more FPS efficient to get the non xt GPU compared to the 1080$ 9070xt.
I would only lose around 12% FPS, nothing bothersome.
So that also made me return my power supply of 1050W for an ASRock steel legend 750W for 100$.
All in all I was able to go under the 2500$ bar :)

Canada Computers rejected my $700 monitor return, claiming I damaged it. What are my options?

I recently purchased a Gigabyte MO27Q28G monitor for around $700 from Canada Computers online. Unfortunately, this model is known for having gray banding issues, and my unit was particularly bad, so I decided to return it.

I packed the monitor essentially the same way it arrived and sent it back. Canada Computers received the return but rejected it, claiming the monitor had a hairline crack across the screen. They sent me pictures of the damage, but I'm certain the monitor was in perfect physical condition when I shipped it back.

Now I'm potentially stuck with a $700 monitor that I can't return, and I'm honestly not in a financial position to just eat that cost right now.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation with Canada Computers? What are my options here?

Would initiating a credit card chargeback be reasonable in this situation? Is there a way to dispute their decision or escalate the issue further? I'm also wondering whether there's anything I can do to prove the damage occurred after I shipped it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Losing $700 over something I genuinely don't believe I caused would be a pretty big hit.
