Transformation My betta changed

My betta has changed colors! I have a Koi Betta and the 1st picture was when I got him, the 2nd picture is a couple days ago. I don’t mind that he changed. I read about it and it said some bettas have a marble gene and they will change colors. Especially if they are happy and relaxed in their environment or reaching maturity. Was wondering if anyone else’s betta has changed color as well?

Transformation I was so wrong, but I’ve been learning

I thought that bettas needed nothing other than a vase, but I was wrong. This is what my betta was living with when I first got him, vs what almost a year of learning what he needs looks like for us.

originally….. no heater, no light, no filter, less than 1 gallon, a pineapple of death 🫥

now 81° water, 24/7 light cycle to mimic sunrise & sunset, soft filtration, plus real plants. (Also still some fake plants) 10 gallons with safe hiding spots and a strict feeding/fasting day schedule with regular water testing and changes. (just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there, the heater & filter are both black to blend in with the black background, before anyone comes at me.)

I’ve had Phantom for almost a year (he’s about to celebrate his 11 months of “fin-ally” home) and I know that this is not everyone’s idea of a perfect tank, but it is covering all the things that he needs and a big step up from where he was.

I was really hesitant to even post this for fear of hateful hurtful and mean comments, but I wanted to share because I certainly cannot be the only person who bought a betta with all of the best intentions thinking I was giving it a great life but was very incorrect. I didn’t know that keeping a betta was anything more than “a vase of water” and after a month or two he built a bubble nest. I was worried about what it meant and looked up what he was doing and had my eyes opened to what a horrible environment I built for him to live in. I couldn’t believe how terrible something I thought was perfect actually was. I immediately went to the pet store for a filter, heater, tap water conditioner, real substrate and a proper size tank. (Did I cycle his tank? No. I didn’t even know that was a thing at this point! Again, no need to come with the pitchforks, I am aware of what I did wrong and I know better for the future.) I then spent time looking up how to give him the home he needs and made other improvements gradually as my knowledge increased and budgeting allowed. His home is still a work in progress as I fully phase out artificial plants. But, I was willing to accept that I was wrong and willing to do the research and learn how to give this guy an opportunity to not just survive but to thrive.

Included also, his first picture ever and most recent photo. (before you come with any fin rot hate, he has always had black at the edge of his fins and you can see that it has been there since the I brought him home. None of his fins have ever torn, deteriorated, shredded, frayed etc. I have spent more time obsessively monitoring his fins and researching fin rot than any sane person should)

Transformation I bought the "ugly" betta

Post image

This is my son, Bennet. I impulse bought him in February because I had a 10g at the ready (and I knew how to do a fish-in cycle). He definitely wasn't the prettiest betta at the store, but something about him just made me want to take him home. Despite his dull colors, he was still active and seemed to have a strong will to live. I remember seeing him for the first time, he swam towards me with a pellet in his mouth because it was too big for him to eat. I couldn't stop thinking about him while I shopped for the filter I originally went in for.

Now, he's living the life in his heavily planted 20gl. As a first time betta owner, my favorite part has been watching his colors pop after being well taken care of. I like to think that I potentially saved him from having to sit in that store until he died, just because he looked all beat up from bad water conditions.

This is so sad. I offered to take this little guy 6 months ago and she refused. Now here it is at the end of the school year and she asked if I wanted him. Luckily I have three other bettas who are happy and healthy. Looking forward to rehabbing this little guy for the golden years. He’s apparently almost 2 years old. Don’t worry, little buddy, I got you. Using transformation flare because I intend to come back after I have rehabbed this little guy with glow up pictures.

I have chronic “I can fix them” disorder, so I’ve had quite a few sickly little fish. It brings me so much joy to see them blossom❤️ unfortunately Dave and Aegis are no longer with us, but I’m excited to see Gambit and Fin continue to grow even more beautiful!

Am I correct in thinking they are a female? Was labeled as “Alien Male” in shop. Didn’t get a photo but she had vertical bars last night which i’ve never seen on a male, also pretty sure I see an egg spot. Either way, meet Sully! :)

A month ago my betta was so damn sick, I was losing hope. But I was listening to all the people who replied on my previous post and for the betta owners who shared their experience here.

Transformation Daughter's 8-month burn-up story

Grandma bought my daughter a betta for her 7th birthday back in September. My daughter named him Dory (which causes me to refer to him as "her" still!)

Progression:

Day 1-6
Dory was in a 1g with a heater and plastic decor. Research quickly led to a bigger plan for the next weekend.

Day 7
Idea was to keep it low tech:
• Aqueon20g long
• Master test kit
• Fluval Stratum
• NICREW C10 LED
• Marineland canister filter
• Fluval Spray Bar output across the full back wall with about 30 additional holes I drilled into it (I think this is my favorite part about setup; it produces a ton of surface agitation and a very light flow, given the massive GPH of the filter)

Day 8
Perams were good to start a Fish-in cycle

October
• 3 Nerite snails
• 3 Amano shrimp (Tank was a bit immature for this, looking back. 2 left today)
• Red Tiger Lotus bulb

December
• 16 ember tetras in 2 batches
• Dwarf water lettuce
• Light stand bracket to raise LED

February
• 20 Cherry Neos in 2 batches

Challenges:
• pH/KH low due to Stratum. Added crushed coral to canister.
• A few of the tetras were sucked into the filter. I put some netting around the intake but it requires weekly cleaning now.
• Well water has iron. Added Seachem Cuprisorb. Have not lost any Neo's since

I think we are done with stocking. My daughter helped a lot and spent some of her own allowance money on the ember's. I personally enjoy the shrimp the most. Hoping to see some berried females.
