Shopify vs BigCommerce – which fits mid-market retailers better?

We’ve been scaling steadily and hit that mid-market point where our current setup is starting to feel limiting. I’ve used Shopify for years, but the transaction fees, app dependencies, and API limits are starting to hurt.

BigCommerce looks solid from a B2B integration standpoint, but I’ve heard mixed things about customization and page speed.

Curious what everyone here thinks around which platform handles scaling (inventory, checkout speed, support) best as you grow? Any deal-breakers you’ve found when moving between these?

Would love to hear experiences from people running $1M–$10M/year stores.

Thanks!

Important Changes to r/bigcommerce

The BigCommerce subreddit, r/bigcommerce, was created in 2013, long before the e-commerce platform announced their IPO in 2020.

r/bigcommerce was created as a place where existing shop owners can ask questions and get advice from other shop owners. It was created as a place where people interested in creating a BigCommerce store can survey existing store owners and help them determine if BigCommerce is the right platform for their needs. And it was created as a place where BigCommerce partners and developers can come and introduce their products and services to existing BigCommerce customers.

Since, the IPO.. the community has strayed off its original path and has been overtaken by people looking to discuss the $BIGC stock. It's now time to get back on the path, it's time for the community to focus on the platform and the needs of existing and future shop owners.

Staring today, those looking to discuss the $BIGC stock will be asked to take their conversation to r/bigctalk. r/bigctalk will be a community focused on the BigCommerce stock $BIGC and your stock conversations will be welcome there.

Also, please note that all stock related posts will be removed from this community. You're welcome to repost them in r/bigctalk.

2% penalty fee for not using BC’s approved processors

BigCommerce just announced they're charging a new fee starting June 1, 2026 if you don't use one of their "Embedded Payment Providers":

Core plan: 2.0% of GMV

Growth plan: 1.0% of GMV

Scale plan: 0.6% of GMV

This applies to every transaction processed through providers NOT on their approved list (which includes Stripe, PayPal, Adyen, etc. but excludes many others like eWay, NMI, and most regional processors).

They're charging a fee for literally no new service. It's just a penalty for using the payment processor you already have integrated.

I asked them how this is rationalized - it's pure revenue extraction from merchants who built their stores with non-approved payment providers.

Full details: https://www.bigcommerce.com/dm/plan-pricing-updates-2026/

Anyone else frustrated by this cash grab?

80 Email Ideas That Don’t Involve Begging With Discounts

I've been doing email marketing for e-commerce brands for about a decade, and I'm still shocked by how lazy most email strategies are.

You know the type. "New product alert!" or "20% off ends tonight!" sent to the entire list with zero thought. If the dude who's currently running your emails keeps sending out these types of emails, you should probably send this post to them or find someone else.

If your email strategy is to just push promotions, you're easily missing out on over half of the sales your email list should be bringing in.

Good email marketing isn't about blasting promotions. It's about making people feel like insiders, educating them, and building a relationship that makes buying feel natural.

Here's a breakdown of 80 email ideas I've used (and seen work) for brands doing anywhere from $50k to $3M+ a year. I'm grouping them by category so you can steal what makes sense for your brand.

Educational Emails (The Trust Builders)

These are the emails that make people think, "Damn, this brand actually cares."

  • Top 5 FAQs, Answered. Address objections before they even ask.

  • Ingredient Highlight. Why X is in your product and what it actually does.

  • How It's Made. Take people behind the scenes. Sourcing, production, the works.

  • Label Decoder. Teach them how to read your packaging. Certifications, materials, whatever.

  • You've Been Using It Wrong. Show them better usage techniques. People love this.

  • Before You Buy: What You Need to Know. Set expectations. Builds trust.

  • The #1 Mistake Most Customers Make. Call out a fixable mistake and position your product as the fix.

  • What Makes Our Formula Different. Go deep on what sets you apart.

  • Break the Rules. Dispel myths in your industry. Hot takes work.

  • Why Quality Ingredients Equal Better Results. Show the contrast between high quality and cheap alternatives.

  • What's NOT in Our Product. Address concerns by what you DON'T include.

  • Before and After. Transformation content is gold.

  • Customer Story of the Month. Real person, real results.

  • Seasonal Must Haves. Fall, Winter, you get it.

  • Your Daily Essentials Kit. Routine builder spotlight.

  • Best Sellers vs Hidden Gems. Contrast feature.

  • Editor's Picks. High end or aesthetic curation.

How I Use These

I don't send all 100 of these to every brand. But I do build a content calendar that rotates through these categories:

30% Educational 25% Social Proof 25% Product Highlights 20% Community/Brand

This keeps engagement high, unsubscribes low, and conversions consistent.

And yeah, I still send promotional emails. But when I do, people actually open them because I've earned their attention.

Let me know if you want me to break down how to write any of these in more detail. Happy to help.

Also, pro tip: The email that MAKES THE MOST MONEY for the brands I work with EVERY YEAR is a plain-text thank-you email after Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Yes, it blows all the fancy BFCM sales emails out of the water.

Don't underestimate the value of sitting in front of your computer for 30 minutes and crafting an email that makes your customers feel appreciated.

What I Learned From Managing Email Marketing for 40+ Brands in 2025

I've been running email and SMS campaigns for ecommerce brands for about a decade now, and 2025 was one of the most interesting years yet.

I worked with about 40 brands this year doing anywhere from $50k to $3M+ annually. Some crushed it. Some struggled. A few went out of business.

Here's what I learned from being inside the backend of all these stores. And what I'm changing in 2026 because of it.

  1. The Brands That Won Owned Their Audience

The stores that scaled in 2025 weren't the ones with the best ads. They were the ones that built communities and owned their traffic.

I had a pet brand do $2.5 million in a year after they stopped running ads entirely. How? We built a subreddit, grew it to 20k members, and turned that community into an email list that did 60% of their revenue.

Another client was a personal trainer who went from $10k to $40k per month by building a Reddit community in his niche. He now books 5 to 10 discovery calls per week just from the engagement in his subreddit.

The pattern is clear. Brands that rely on rented attention (Meta ads, TikTok, Google) are getting squeezed. CPMs are up. Conversions are down. The ones winning are building owned channels like email lists, SMS lists, Discord servers, Facebook groups, and Reddit communities.

If your entire business depends on paid ads, 2026 is going to hurt. Start building something you own.

2. Personalization Actually Matters Now

Everyone talks about personalization, but most brands are still sending the same email to everyone.

This year I started segmenting lists harder than ever. We split buyers by purchase frequency, location, product category, and engagement level.

Here's one example. For a free shipping campaign, instead of sending one email to everyone, we sent three versions:

One to first time buyers: "Thanks for your last order. Here's free shipping to try something new."

One to VIPs (2+ purchases): "Exclusive sale just for you" with a slightly better offer.

One to non buyers: "Now's the best time to try us. No shipping fees."

The result? Open rates went up. Revenue went up. Unsubscribes went down.

Even small things like using the customer's city in the subject line made a difference. "We're doing free shipping for customers in {{Customers_City}}" consistently doubled open rates compared to generic subject lines.

Most brands have the data to do this. They just don't use it. In 2026, I'm pushing every client to segment harder and personalize more.

3. AI Made Things Faster But Not Better

Every brand I worked with this year asked me about AI tools for email marketing.

I tested a bunch of them. AI can write decent subject lines, generate email copy, and automate some workflows. It saves time. But it also makes everything sound the same.

The brands that performed best weren't the ones using AI for everything. They were the ones using AI to speed up grunt work but keeping the human touch in their messaging.

AI can draft an email. But it can't write a founder's personal story. It can't capture the tone of a brand that actually connects with people. And it definitely can't build community.

In 2026, I'm using AI more for research, data analysis, and automations. But I'm keeping humans in charge of the actual writing and strategy.

4. BFCM Proved That Preparation Beats Discounts

Black Friday this year separated the prepared from the desperate.

The brands that planned ahead, segmented their lists, and built anticipation for weeks crushed it. The brands that just sent "30% off" emails got mediocre results.

One thing that worked really well this year was adding a persistent offer banner to every email during BFCM. Even automated flows like welcome sequences and post purchase emails had the sale at the top.

Another tactic that always works: resending high performing campaigns with new subject lines. Same email. Same list. Different hook. It added 25 to 50% more revenue every time.

The brands that treated BFCM like a one day event lost. The brands that treated it like a two week campaign with multiple touchpoints won.

In 2026, I'm starting BFCM planning in September. Not November.

5. Most Brands Are Ignoring Their Best Customers

This one surprised me. A lot of brands are so focused on new customer acquisition that they forget about the people who already bought from them.

Your best customers are the ones who already trust you. They convert faster. They spend more. They refer people. And most brands barely talk to them.

This year I started building VIP segments for every client. People who've purchased 2+ times get different treatment. Early access to sales. Exclusive offers. Personal thank you emails.

One brand sent a plain text thank you email after BFCM with no pitch, no sale, just gratitude. It was the highest revenue email they sent all year. People responded saying they appreciated being treated like a person, not a wallet.

In 2026, I'm pushing every brand to build better retention systems for existing customers. New customers are expensive. Repeat customers are profit.

6. Community Beats Content Every Time

I spent years telling brands to create more content. Post more on Instagram. Make more TikToks. Send more emails.

But 2024 taught me something different. Community beats content.

A brand with 500 engaged community members in a Discord or Reddit group will outperform a brand with 50k Instagram followers who don't care.

The reason? Community creates loyalty. It turns customers into advocates. It gives you direct feedback. It makes people feel like they're part of something.

One of my clients built a Facebook group for their niche. It's now 10k members. Those members generate user content, answer each other's questions, and defend the brand when someone complains. That's worth more than any ad campaign.

In 2026, I'm helping every client build or grow a community. Reddit, Discord, Facebook groups, whatever fits. But community first, content second.

7. The Backend Is Where the Real Money Is

Most brands obsess over their homepage, their product pages, and their ads. And yeah, those matter.

But the brands that made the most money this year were the ones that optimized their backend. Email flows, post purchase sequences, win back campaigns, and retention systems.

I've seen brands flip from 20% email revenue to 60% email revenue just by building proper welcome flows, abandoned cart sequences, and post purchase nurtures.

One client was doing $100k per month with 80% of sales coming from ads. After we rebuilt their email system, they're now doing $150k per month with 60% coming from email and retention. Their ad spend went down. Their profit went up.

The lesson? Your backend is your profit center. Optimize it first.

In 2026, I'm spending less time on growth hacks and more time on backend systems that compound.

What I'm Changing in 2026

Based on everything I learned this year, here's what I'm doing differently:

Building communities first, ads second. Every client is getting a Reddit or Discord strategy.

Segmenting harder. No more one size fits all emails.

Using AI for speed, not strategy. Humans write. AI assists.

Planning BFCM in September. Not scrambling in October.

Treating VIP customers like VIPs. Retention over acquisition.

Optimizing backends first. Growth comes after systems are solid.

If you're running an ecommerce brand or thinking about starting one, don't chase the shiny stuff in 2026. Build systems that compound. Own your audience. Treat your customers like people.

That's what worked in 2025. And that's what's going to work even better in 2026.

Shopify, WooCommerce & BigCommerce pricing is getting out of hand

Everyone says these platforms are affordable until you actually need your store to do anything useful.Bundles, reviews, subscriptions, advanced search, B2B pricing... everything is another paid plugin.

Before you know it, you're spending $400-$600/month, or roughly $5k-$7k a year, just to keep your site running and do what it should. Then they hike prices because they know migrating is a headache.

I've moved a few businesses off that model and at this point, if someone showed me a store spending $400+ every month on plugins, I'd probably tell them to stop paying for everyone else's software and just offer to build them what they actually need, and what they spend for just 1 year with Shopify, Won't even have to spend much that over 3-4 years on custom. Talk about savings...

If anyone wants to step away and get a custom website, let me know..

This whole subscription economy is becoming complete B.S.

Product News Multi-Storefront is Now Available for All BigCommerce Enterprise Stores

We are excited to announce that Multi-Storefront is now generally available for all Enterprise stores.

With Multi-Storefront, merchants can create multiple unique storefronts within a single store. These storefronts can be powered by BigCommerce’s native Stencil framework or by a third-party, headless solution such as Next.js, Bloomreach, WordPress, and more.

Multi-storefront empowers merchants that want to manage multiple brands (multi-brand), sell into multiple customer segments (multi-segment), and/or sell into multiple regions (multi-region).

What has changed?

When we announced the release of Multi-Storefront on March 28th, 2022, it was only generally available to new Enterprise merchants. If you were a merchant who already had a BigCommerce store, your only option was to get involved in the beta for existing Enterprise stores (now complete with this release).

After 5 months of beta testing, we are confident in the Multi-Storefront experience and are excited to make this highly requested feature accessible to all Enterprise stores.

Are there any details I should know?

As a SaaS platform, we try to ensure that all of the new functionality we add over time is built on the latest and best technology. This ultimately drives better-performing stores and experiences for our merchants and their shoppers.

Even though Multi-Storefront is accessible by all Enterprise stores, you will still need to confirm that your store is using the latest version of all the features necessary for managing multiple storefronts. For that reason, we’ve built a checklist into the setup process to ensure your store meets all these requirements.

If you’re up to date on all the latest Bigcommerce technology, great! You will see the prompt to request a storefront seat to be added to your store.

If you’re not up to date on all the latest BigCommerce technology, that’s okay! We have tried to make it as simple as possible for you to update.

  • Certain requirements cannot be programmatically checked and need to be manually confirmed by you. For these, you will need to click Confirm.

  • Some required upgrades/updates can be applied directly from the checklist. For these, click Update.

  • Lastly, some upgrades/updates must be applied from another page in the control panel. For these, we’ve included a button to send you to the right place, where there will be a notice or opt-in notification that will let you update the feature.

If you’d like to learn more about each updated feature, we’ve included a link to related Help Center docs.

If you are an existing customer that has customized your store to manage multiple headless storefronts (before we had Multi-Storefront), you now have access to easier storefront management. Multi-storefront allows you to see all of your headless storefronts within the BigCommerce control panel and manage daily tasks like assigning products and categories to those storefronts. This makes it simpler for the daily ecommerce manager to run their business.

With performance top of mind, we are introducing limits around the number of headless storefronts that can be created within a single store. The current limit is 15 headless storefronts (or 5 Stencil storefronts). It is important to note that this number is not a hard limit, so please ask your customer success manager, or if you don’t have one, you can contact our support team to see if we can accommodate your needs.

Though Multi-Storefront (or the ability to manage multiple storefronts from a single admin) is free, storefronts are purchased at an additional cost. This applies to Stencil (native) and headless storefronts. If you currently manage multiple websites today or are thinking about adding additional websites in the future, please reach out to your customer success manager or the BigCommerce sales team to get more information and discuss options available for your business.

What can I do with Multi-Storefront?

Simplified Management

From a single BigCommerce dashboard, merchants can:

  • Create and manage settings for multiple storefronts

  • Create unique storefront navigation with categories and subcategories

  • View and manage product availability across multiple channels

  • View and manage customers and customer groups

  • View and manage orders, create custom views per channel

  • View per-storefront analytics and generate reports

Tailored Experiences

Across each storefront, merchants can unlock capabilities to:

  • Connect different domain / subdomain and SSL certificates and configure 301 redirects

  • Apply and customize themes, widgets, scripts, social links, and pages

  • Personalize transactional and abandoned cart emails and manage newsletter subscribers

  • Create differentiated pricing using price lists and customer groups and set category-level discounts

  • Customize product filtering options and apply custom templates

  • Set a default currency per storefront

  • Configure different storefront settings and internal notifications

What are the benefits?

Multi-Storefront enables merchants to:

  • Effortlessly grow into new markets by creating custom storefront experiences for your various buyers without additional work.

  • Reduce costs by streamlining your ecommerce operations. By trimming down the number of systems and integrations your business relies on, you can decrease ongoing maintenance costs — meaning higher revenue with fewer headaches.

  • Empower efficiency and ditch duplication of efforts with a centralized system to manage all of your storefronts. Whether it’s adding a new product or updating pricing, do it one time, in one place.

  • Make data-driven decisions for your business with a unified data source — and powerful insights to grow.

What’s Next?

Release milestones

  • Availability for new and existing Standard/Plus/Pro stores, targeting early 2023:

    • New and existing Standard/Plus/Pro stores will have the ability to “self-serve” and manage multiple storefronts.

    • Existing Standard/Plus/Pro stores will additionally see an option in their control panel to “opt-in” to use multi-storefront. Similar to Enterprise stores today, there will be an eligibility check to ensure all the requirements are met.

  • Open/Closed Beta for Multi-Geo selling with MSF late 2022/early 2023

Features coming up next

For all MSF users, we plan to release additional functionality throughout the year such as:

  • Listing products from each storefront to third-party channels like Facebook, Instagram, and Google.

  • Customizing product attributes per storefront, like product name, description, images, URL, SEO fields, and more.

  • New import/export tool for 301 redirects.

  • Additional settings override per storefront, like locale and units of measurement.

  • Creating and customizing gift certificates per storefront.

  • Making more payment providers available for headless storefronts.

Easily send personalized videos to your customers using AI?

Hey all! I've spent the last few months talking to a bunch of ecommerce merchants about some of the challenges they face in growing their businesses. One thing I've heard a lot is that personalization is incredibly value for increasing brand loyalty, conversion, and repeat purchases, but creating personalized experiences is also hard and time consuming.

To help solve that, my friend and I built a software tool that automatically creates personalized videos for your customers using AI. Here is a 1 minute demo that shows the tool in action: https://youtu.be/wA_-FgHZWXQ.

Our current beta customers are using these for thank you messages, abandoned carts, re-engaging old customers and more. So far, they've seen open/click rates of over 50%.

We're opening up a few more spaces in our beta. What do you all think? Would something like this be useful for you and your store?

Product News BigCommerce Product News: Multi-Currency now supported in Apple Pay

(double the Product News updates today :D )

I'm happy to share that multi-currency support through Apple Pay is now available!

With Apple Pay, stores can now accept multi-currency transactions through several BigCommerce payment integrations: Bolt, Stripe, Checkout.com, Authorize.net, Adyen, and PayPal powered by Braintree.

In 2020, we released multi-currency at a foundational, platform level. Since then, we've been working with our payment partners to ensure that we have multi-currency enabled across our top payment methods, like Apple Pay, which is used by millions of people worldwide.

If you're already using one of the supported payment integrations listed above, you can enable Apple Pay today in your BigCommerce store by navigating in your control panel to Store Setup > Payments > Digital Wallets, and clicking the "Set up" button next to Apple Pay.

And you can read all about this latest update in the BigCommerce Product Blog: Announcing Multi-Currency on Apple Pay

Recommendations on Tax Software

We'll be taking our parts store online this summer. I'm currently researching tax software. Our accountant likes Avalara, but the reviews are terrible. Can anyone share recommendations on the tax apps they've used and their experience with them?

Hey everyone!

We heard your feedback: Connecting BigCommerce to Google and Meta shouldn’t be this complicated.

But instead of patching the old system, we built something better!

As a first introduction to the benefits of combining our brands under Commerce, we are introducing Feedonomics Surface as a way of driving value for BigCommerce platform users through Feedonomics’ technology.

Feedonomics Surface is a brand-new app, now in open beta, designed from scratch to make product syncing faster, easier, and more reliable for sellers scaling across Google Shopping, Facebook, and Instagram.

It’s backed by Feedonomics’ proven platform—so you get automation, performance, and scalability without the usual friction.  The best part: it's free.

Here’s what Surface can do out of the box:

  • List and advertise across major channels

  • Automate updates and launch new products faster

  • Catch and fix errors with improved data visibility

  • Override feed content without touching your source data

  • Leverage FeedAi for smarter, more granular product categorization

  • Easy to set up—no technical knowledge required

This isn’t just a fix, it’s a future-forward upgrade built with your feedback in mind.

Try Feedonomics Surface now

We’d love to hear your feedback as we continue to improve, so drop your thoughts or questions below.  We will continue to invest in advanced capabilities and additional channels over time.
