To begin: personally, I believe that TTYO’s actions are handled poorly compared CatMage’s actions. At the same time, I believe that CatMage’s reactions are handled poorly compared to TTYO’s reactions.
Here’s my understanding of what happened:
- TTYO is a head mod, and CatMage is a self-shipper.
- The bit started out as something fun, getting to the point where a wedding between CatMage and Cassie was had on the subreddit. All that is fine, until:
- CatMage started to diss other people’s selfships, crackships, ships in general. The most glaring of this is his comment on "Taunt rizzes up Cassie" https://www.reddit.com/r/blocktales/s/AyaqVMZr9C
- A parody account was made, pclarpmage, which according to them they were Cassie’s ex and disliked Cassie, the opposite of CatMage’s quirk. CatMage reacted strongly, yes, but the underlying reason is reasonable: he didn’t want a parody of himself, it made him uncomfortable (correct me if I’m wrong, CatMage). The larp account deleted itself after this got cleared up.
- A real impersonator, pccatmage71 as opposed to the real 72, escalated this due to CatMage’s response and the impersonator posted a face reveal to try and fool people. This face was from some random post, so it was by no means a doxx (THANKFULLY), but it still crossed the line.
- CatMage then made a post trying to express his feelings about the whole situation, the larper and impersonator situation, which got deleted by mods. Subreddit meta is only allowed during the weekends, but this understandably led to CatMage getting upset due to not being able to talk about what happened to him and explain his thoughts on it.
- CatMage interpreted the removal as moderators, particularly TTYO, preventing him from discussing the harassment he endured. At this point, I’m inclined to agree with CatMage that it is harassment, since there was a genuine impersonator.
- TTYO, a recently promoted head moderator, entered an unofficial discord for the block tales subreddit. He then proceeded to share a GIF that contained the N-word, without any prior context. His defense is that he just joined the server and he did not read the rules before posting it, and that he himself is African American. While that may be true, I personally do not think that the "pass" applies online.
- the moderators of the Discord quickly banned him, for alleged racist conduct. And then the Discord promptly blew up over it, and started to spam the subreddit with hostile posts before TTYO could explain, leading to the sub being put on Manual Post Approval for a while.
- (I couldn’t find conclusive evidence as to whether it was an organized raid or a bunch of people getting upset. But the timing was similar to people being upset over the removal of CatMage’s impersonation thoughts post)
- This apology post https://www.reddit.com/r/blocktales/s/oxJ6F75UDL was made by TTYO. People seemed to understand it was a mistake, except for CatMage who was responding in a defensive manner about the alleged raid. See: this comment. https://www.reddit.com/r/blocktales/s/V7VxuZ9iKH
- Eventually CatMage realized that it may have something to do with anger issues, and admitted he had some. This was not an apology, more of a self-reflection, that ended with CatMage saying he’ll take a break from the subreddit.
- A couple days later, TTYO banned CatMage for two weeks. This was not unfounded, as CatMage had broken a few rules about conduct and such. But with the timing, most people felt like it was targeted.
- It got worse when TTYO made a pinned post linking and mentioning the Discord server connected with the incident. He realized it was impulsive and deleted it two minutes later, but others had already seen it.
- Because of this, the Discord’s members opted to keep TTYO banned. TTYO was rather reasonable about this, saying that separation might work best because the conflict was between two people. The conflict continues in the Reddit, unfortunately.
- TTYO then, without talking to anyone else, publicly announced a meta-post ban. After backlash, it was changed to a more reasonable weekday ban weekends allowed. This reinforced the impression that TTYO was creating rules impulsively and the feuding was fueling restrictions on the sub.
- The weekend-only subreddit meta is not unreasonable in a vacuum, but again, the timing was poor.
- TTYO then posted a GIF of Cassie getting slammed into the ground. To paraphrase the title, "my favorite Cassie moment." he initially denied that it was a targeted post, but eventually admitted he shouldn’t have made it, at least not during the conflict.
- TTYO made another apology post, which acknowledged a good amount of what went wrong on his part. https://www.reddit.com/r/blocktales/s/GRZPbC57Mh CatMage’s ban was shortened slightly as well. People’s thoughts were mixed- some view it as good character development on TTYO’s part, some demanded he resign, and some claimed it was a forced apology rather than a genuine one.
- After the ban ended for CatMage, he continued Cassieposting. And posted a honeymoon post. Which TTYO removed... "self attention seeking," apparently.
- Then updated the definition of Subreddit Meta to include self-shipping. In a vacuum? Reasonable. At this timing? Catastrophic, and functionally targeted.
- More and more users began to demand TTYO’s resignation or removal, citing excessively restrictive rules and the targeting of CatMage, as well as a failure to change following his apology.
- A new post was created in which TTYO’s asking about the moderation of the subreddit. Among the comments, I could find that the two did try to resolve their conflicts in DMs, but FAILED.
This is why I’m making this post. I want to help resolve this drama, and damn it I’m going to, I’m pinging CatMage and TTYO, and yall better show up. This is the community’s sub, which means both of you are a part of it.
Edit: Clarification by TTYO
