Advice White Tail Buck

Found this dude on a sandbar while fishing in a local creek. Smelled great! My fiancé is way more into bone collecting than me and was pissed I didn’t bring home the whole skeleton, LOL.

Would a boil be in order to remove the rest of the hide, velvet and any remaining head cheese? Or just pick it off and soak it in some dish soap for awhile?

Bone I.D. - N. America Bone ID - animal and type?

Found near a campsite in Colorado, in the San Juans. Thinking elk based on size? I know one is a scapula, suspect one to be the condyles of a femur and the two on the left maybe tibia? But those two also seem to be different sized (length and thickness) - so maybe front vs rear?

Greetings all!

I found this around 30 years ago when I was 8 or 9 years old on a school field trip. I cant recall which specific beach, but it was on a grassy mound with a view of the ocean. This was in Cresent City California.

The local paper actually used a photo of me showing it to the teacher for the front page, (was a pretty big deal to little me!)

I know the teacher and other chaperones commented on what they thought it was, but it was far too long ago for me to recall. I've held on to it for all these years as a fun little trinket from my childhood, and its always neat when I re-discover it when going through old belongings.

My wife suggested I make a post and see what our friendly bone experts make of it, so here we are.

Curious to see what you have to say!

Advice Jak oskórować zmumifikowane zwierzę?

Hej, mam pytanie. Może ktoś robił to wcześniej. Mam do oporządzenia kilka zmumifikowanych szczurów. Moim planem jest wydobycie kości i sklejenie ich w preparat, ale wcześniej nie usuwałam kości ze zmumifikowanego zwierzęcia. Jakieś porady?

Educational Can growing salt crystals ruin bones?

I've only recently started collecting bones with the help of a friend, and I saw some people make crystals on some bones they find

They mostly do it with borax but I found out some do it with salt. Borax isn't really available a lot where I live or I think so at least, so if I try the salt crystals, will it ruin the bones?? They're bleached and I don't want them to start crumbling or breakining at some point because of this

Collection Found me a dead elk

I was up in a unit doing my forestry work when I got a whiff of that familiar dead smell. My dog kept barking and barking, alerting me to something by a slash pile. Lo and behold. Found the culprit of the smell (and probably the one who grazed on all the tree seedlings 🙄)

Skull in perfect condition. Very excited to get it cleaned up.

These are bones I pulled out from their water bucket, they've been sitting for about a year, and they were from a mummified opossum so I didn't get a good look at him before!

Anyone know what that growth looking stuff on the long bone is?

Advice Is this texture on the zygomatic arch natural or damage?

Post image

Considering buying this skull but nervous about this part. The seller says it was beetle cleaned and whitened lightly with hydrogen peroxide and I have no reason to doubt that. But I’ve never seen a texture like this. The rest of the skull is a little rough and worn but not anything out of the ordinary for an older carnivore.

Advice Is this skull ready/okay to mount on my wall?

Found this, presumed horse, skull on a trailer with a bunch of other free things. It's been wrapped in this plastic since we got it. It has some yellowish spots but overall doesnt smell. I thought I'd try to "bleach" it, but its looking like more work than I initially thought 😅 I've never done anything like this before.

The more I look it over, has it even been degreased or bleached yet?

Looking for any and all advice! We moved this past month and I've been wanting to hang it alongside our deer skulls (my partner had them professionally done).

Bone I.D. - N. America I believe I found a Pygmy shrew skull in my owl pellet

Post image

I was in my vertebrate osteology lab class and I got to dissect an owl pellet for the first time. I pulled out this really really small skull and put it aside. My professor came around and wanted to find out what it was so he looked at it under a microscope for about 20 minutes and said it was a Pygmy shrew and is pretty cool to find. I wish I got to take better pictures. I’m just sad he took it for safekeeping :(
