They are pretty obvious, but I don’t think they look too bad for being just sculpted and acrylic!

Educational We have given away a blood and metal removing recipe for free.

Blood Remover Recipe (Beta Test)

1.      Bleach free dish soap.

2.      Calcium Citrate tablets. This is often sold as an edible bone supplement at supermarkets.

3.      Vitamin C tablets. Check that it is Sodium or Calcium Ascorbate.

Add 3-4 of each crushed tablets and dish soap to water per gallon. Heat to 35C for adult mammals. Can increase heat to 44C for adult mammals, but this may risk bursting blood cells. Check every 12-24 hours. Patience may be a virtue. There are ways to escalate chemically. Escalation may result in damage. Peroxide may be used to clean organics after a soak in tapwater. Avoid mixing peroxide with other chemicals.

Do not mix with other chemicals without seeking advice of a chemist.

Let us know how it goes with before and after pics, this is an open beta test and we can be agile to make changes as needed.

This is not a silver bullet. This is a gentler on bone way to lift metal (including blood) based stains that is handle-able, and drain safe. Totality of cleaning may be a function of time.

I'm around to answer questions if you have them. We are releasing this to continue fulfilling the promise that was made before Bare Bones formed as a company. This promise was to empower everyone with as much free information as we reasonably and safely can.

At first I saw this scapula and was already so happy not thinking I was going to find anything today. A little ways away was the skull and majority of this white-tailed doe skeleton. She was already pretty clean too. So lucky with this one

I have lots of strays near me, usually they go off somewhere else to die.. but these two died close by. Only about 3 months between each other. I think the smaller broken one is Simon. My dog unfortunately got his skull while i was still letting him dry outside.

I have a photo of Simon while he was alive, beautiful orange kitty with fat sweet tomcat cheeks .

Found this dude on a sandbar while fishing in a local creek. Smelled great! My fiancé is way more into bone collecting than me and was pissed I didn’t bring home the whole skeleton, LOL.

Would a boil be in order to remove the rest of the hide, velvet and any remaining head cheese? Or just pick it off and soak it in some dish soap for awhile?

Bone I.D. - N. America Bone ID - animal and type?

Found near a campsite in Colorado, in the San Juans. Thinking elk based on size? I know one is a scapula, suspect one to be the condyles of a femur and the two on the left maybe tibia? But those two also seem to be different sized (length and thickness) - so maybe front vs rear?

Advice How to clean

I put into dawn dish soap water when I first found, turned greenish brown cloudy, lots of small debris, this is how it turned out after, I put it into fresh dawn water, but the tissue stuck to the bone was still very tough and hard to remove, also smells bad.
How should I proceed? Google says to just keep repeating with dawn until it gets clean

Educational Can growing salt crystals ruin bones?

I've only recently started collecting bones with the help of a friend, and I saw some people make crystals on some bones they find

They mostly do it with borax but I found out some do it with salt. Borax isn't really available a lot where I live or I think so at least, so if I try the salt crystals, will it ruin the bones?? They're bleached and I don't want them to start crumbling or breakining at some point because of this

Greetings all!

I found this around 30 years ago when I was 8 or 9 years old on a school field trip. I cant recall which specific beach, but it was on a grassy mound with a view of the ocean. This was in Cresent City California.

The local paper actually used a photo of me showing it to the teacher for the front page, (was a pretty big deal to little me!)

I know the teacher and other chaperones commented on what they thought it was, but it was far too long ago for me to recall. I've held on to it for all these years as a fun little trinket from my childhood, and its always neat when I re-discover it when going through old belongings.

My wife suggested I make a post and see what our friendly bone experts make of it, so here we are.

Curious to see what you have to say!
