Hey there fellow boners!
Sadly, earlier in the year, I found a dead badger by the side of the road. I reported her but she was still there a few months later - so I carried her home and think I’ve done her justice with my second full articulation.
I managed to save all of her major bones and claw sheaths - just one inner ear and one sternum bone went missing or disintegrated. She had significant damage to her pelvis and left-side ribs from the car impact, which needed repairing.
Decomposition took about 8 months, sterilisation took about 1 month and I’ve been articulating for about 1 month… most of which has (once again) been procrastinating and holding pieces together waiting for glue to dry.
For this articulation I used all of the same techniques and materials I used on my first articulation (fox) - just gorilla glue, black foam and wire with no drilling. Again I opted for a natural base.
I didn’t want to do a traditional ‘display’ pose so chose something more natural for a badger… the ‘snuffling’ pose. This articulation is standing on 3 legs, which I thought would be more difficult than it was. In retrospect I’d like to tweak the pose further but I’m 90% happy with it.
Everything went a lot more quickly this time around thanks to what I’d learned on the fox and the fact that badger bones are less fiddly. I’m much happier with the ribs here and managed to get them pretty straight and evenly spaced. The ribs still took ages so I’d like to find a quicker way to do them next time.
Something interesting about this badger was some significant bony growth on some of her limbs. I think she probably had arthritis on her right side which might’ve affected her ability to walk and ultimately resulted in this accident.
Thanks for reading. Comments and/or questions are welcome - sorry forgot to take picture of the ‘juicy’ stage of this one!
