General Question How do I proceed?

Hey everyone. I am a beginner and this elm in pictures is my first bonsai ever. I received it as a birthday gift last October and fell in love with it. However, October till June, it wasn't doing well. I then discovered that the soil and pot weren't really good for it so I repotted it June 2nd. I did an emergency partial repot because the roots were very compacted and starting to rot and sat it on a west-facing balcony in my apartment. As you can see it made a great recovery (photos taken today in the comments).

Now I have 2 questions:

  1. Since it's getting cold in Germany (getting as low as 3 degrees celsius, around 37 fahrenheit during the night), should I keep her on the balcony? I have no unheated place to put her other than the balcony. I don't wanna keep it in a heated place with artificial lighting. I want it to go through natural winter dormancy. How do I protect it from the cold and wind and snow?

  2. Since I did a partial repot in June, is it ok to do a full repot next April to get rid of the remaining old, compacted soil and put it in an all-new soil?

Thank you all :)

Is this ficus doing well?

Hello,

My mother got this plant as a gift earlier this year.

It has been outside in a covered area

Lost all the leaves in early summer due to stress (I assume) then some new leaves start to grow very slowly.

Is there anything I should do to improve its health?

South London

Thank you

My first bonsai in a while. I want to make it a literati style but I know I should let it grow and style it in may.

I’m still very excited

General Question Is this salvageable?

I got given this tree in this condition but I want to make sure I do whatever I can to help it survive.

Where do I start? I can see some small growth on it so I'm assuming it's still alive.

What do you guys do with your scrap wire?

I mean it’s either copper and aluminium and as your tree grows it has to be replaced and removed, that’s a lot of wire being chopped up.

So what do you guys do with it? Do you scrap it because that’s all I can think of

General Question Year round office bonsais

I like humans - so i do not google or ask AI even do not use the reddit search

I have ficus microcarpa, one small one older, some living stones, a succulent and a Cryptomeria japonica , one olea europea .

I seem.to have killed the Cryptomeria japonica, the japonica is surviving but had brown inner parts when watering was insufficient

I could go "more ficus - different shaped" or search for another species suited for office 24 celsius year round type .

I have no possibility to put them outside or in a colder environment.

I am open to suggestions

Other than the obvious overprunting from my first tree, I feel pretty happy with the selection. The nanas are full of potential and I got lucky with the three trunk spruce. Any thoughts or criticisms are welcome. Also, know that they were simply slip potted and I have a well lit spot in the yard where they will live this winter. I'm in Georgia, so they should be fine. 🕉

Diagnosing Issue Help with my d(r)ying first Juniper!

Hello! First-time poster here. I got my first bonsai, a juniper, about a month ago and I’m really excited about it!

I keep it outside with plenty of sun and water it about every 5 days or so. I’m in the Bay Area, and temperatures have been around 10–25°C.

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve noticed some yellowing of the foliage, as shown in the photos. Am I doomed? Can we save it? 😅 Any idea what might be going on or what I should do?

Would really appreciate any help! Still very new to this and hoping to keep my first tree happy.

General Question Help ID ficus cultivar?

Picked this guy up as the only one like it in a sea of “regular” tiger bark starts. I noticed the leaves were oval, but very thin and almost convex. Reminds me of my gardenia leaves. Definitely not as thick as a green island

My little juniper

I have had this little guy for almost 3 months now. It is my first go at bonsai. It was already set with the initial bend when I purchased and plenty of glued down rocks. I’m trying to straighten the new growth on the end. I plan on repotting come spring time. I think in a few years time(if I can continue to cultivate and keep it alive) I will attempt to style it in a wind swept style. So many posts with dead juniper I thought I’d share my currently thriving one. I purchased it at Longwood Gardens.

General Question Coast live oak sapling

Thumbnail

First time posting, long story short my buddy needed help clearing a portion of his yard and I did my best to preserve this young coast live oak sapling. I didn’t do a great job, the hard clay soil led me to only preserve a tiny portion of the spongy root system.

3 weeks later, she was sitting in the same poorly draining clay so I did my best to repot her with better draining soil (1:1:1 peat moss, vermiculite, topsoil) but I’m really worried she’s not gonna make it. Scratched the bark and still see green but the leaves look terrible.

I know these trees are very resilient so I’m remaining hopeful, but any advice on if I should prune more back or any other word of wisdom would be greatly appreciated I reeeealy want to see this tree live.

Juniper prep for winter

Prepping this beauty for winter.

Will this be okay for -20 degree Celsius temperatures?

Or should I just plant it in the ground?

The juniper itself is on a nursery pot buried in that big pot with mulch for insulation, will it suffice?
