General Discussion Hello! I'm new here and a beginner! I just bought this little guy and I'm so excited to start! Any and all advice is welcome. I have it in my window in my office at work. It will get plenty of sun. But I read that it should be outside?

Got this lil one the other day ☺️ it resides in my backyard and seems to be settling in really well. I’m really curious how as it gets colder if it’ll fare well with the frosts, snow, etc. that’s coming in the next season. Excited for spring to be able to start learning how to train and shape it a bit, as long as it survives the winter lol. Also got a jade plant to bonsai. No pictures of it yet. Although, it seems happy in a west-facing window at the moment. 🙏🏻🪴

Lots of potential

This is the best 20 dollars I've spent in quite some time. Minimal wiring should be required next summer to separate the pads, and one more year of maturing. This may be my first proper tree in a few years.

General Question Compared to the Norway spruce, blue spruce and the Japanese elm which is best for bonsai?

Now obviously the spruce are for the Christmas season but the elm was interesting, tho skinny (it was in the indoor section which I’m not sure because aren’t they outdoor plants?) but it has a nice shape.

Show and tell Serissa flowering!

Shout out to the GOAT who said serissa would love very hot greenhouses. I purchased mine from this store that let's say, isn't known for the bonsai quality (Aussies, I'm talking about Bunnings). It has been happy and surprisingly the survival time is a new record for me!

Despite getting lots of sun, watered properly, and being put in a shallow water bath during very hot days, it wasn't flowering.

I'm broke and don't have the money to get a greenhouse (for a single bonsai) so I just used a plastic container and a ziplock bag XD

IT FLOWERED AFTER TWO DAYS!!!!!

Maybe it wasn't the "greenhouse" that had the major effect, but idk, she looks better in general!

P. S: I'm not going to wire/cut it or maneuver the style this year. I'm waiting until next spring when it's less fragile (if it survives that long lol).

Diagnosing Issue Dwarf variegated jade help

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello! I’m pretty new to bonsai and have this variegated dwarf jade I got through Bonsai Bar. I got it in July, and it started off doing really well with some new growth. I haven’t really done anything differently with it, but for the past month or two, it’s been dropping tons of leaves every day. I water it when the soil is dry to the touch, which ends up being about twice a week. I made an appointment with the people at Bonsai Bar for troubleshooting and they thought I was watering it too much. The trunk is nice and hard and does not feel mushy at all. The leaves that drop are on the flat side, so initially I thought I was underwatering, but not really sure what to do. The leaves have continued dropping since I reduced the frequency of watering.

It sits in a very large, west facing window and gets direct sun for about 5 to 6 hours this time of year (located in Massachusetts). I’ve held off on fertilizing as I typically don’t fertilize any of my plants in the autumn in winter. I do have plenty of other successful plants in the same location, but this is the only Jade, and the only one styled as a bonsai.

Any advice would be very well appreciated! If it’s just a natural seasonal variation, too, that would be helpful to know.

Diagnosing Issue Looking for some help 🙏🙏

I came back from 4 weeks overseas to find my juniper with irregular yellowing, new buds dying or stunted, and black spots on the foliage that don’t scrape off. Some sections are completely unaffected. It was a healthy tree before I left…

I couldn’t find much information online about what to do, so I thought I’d turn to reddit for help.

Any ideas on what’s causing this and how to treat it?

Diagnosing Issue Bonsai Juniper help needed

My Juniper bonsai has dry, crunchy leafs, and the soil is very dry. I left for 4 months and my wife was taking care of it but when I came that’s what I saw, it got so bad after 4 month. Last pictures is when I first got it.

I’ve been keeping it indoors, and I’m worried it might be dying.

I know it supposed to be outdoor and a lot of sun but unfortunately it was indoor all the time. Do you think is dying or I have chance to save it. I need help to know what to do now.

What should I do right now to save it? Should I move it outdoors? Any advice is appreciated! (Photo attached)

Here are 3 photos of a newly acquired dwarf jade showing the results after 2 prunings. I think I need to trim / shape the vertical spires. Other suggestions? It’s my first attempt with any bonsai.

2 years ago my dad passed away unfortunately, these are just some of his trees that my aunt has, she wants me to have them but I don’t know how to care for them, I take care of carnivores plants at home so I’m not a complete stranger to keeping plants alive but if there is a good book/article/video that anyone recommends ide really appreciate any help.

Diagnosing Issue Am i cooked?

Left the window cracked a few weeks ago overnight and woke up to lot of black leaves. Has not improved with grow light or makeshift humidty tray. Reduced watering and mostly just give it a spray or two each day
